´3 Cups of Tea´ co-author David
Oliver Relin dead: apparent suicide

David Oliver Relin, Gregory Mortenson´s co-author on the bestseller "Three Cups of Tea," has died. The 49-year-old committed suicide last month in Oregon, the Multnomah County medical examiner announced late Sunday, saying blunt force trauma to the head was the cause of death. Relin´s suicide adds to the shadow cast on "Three Cups of Tea," which tells of Mortenson´s travels in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan and his work creating schools for the children, particularly girls, in those remote regions. The book was plunged into controversy in April 2011, when Jon Krakauer published an

Blunt force trauma to the head seems like a hard and painful way to kill yourself. Probably a decent man, conned by a not so honorable man.

I hesitate to speak this nugget of unspeakable truth about Afghanistan but....

These sweet and generous tribal people (of whom many are my friends)can almost conceive of the notion of democracy but......when we start to tell them how to treat their wives and daughters, that just makes us sound crazy to them.

I speak from painful, personal experience.

Leave these people alone.

Kill ´em if you have to but don´t try to change them.

The article seems a little sketchy.

But the deceased seems like a typical "ruling-class-wanna-be" that is willing to do anything to become a modern "player": someone "selflessly" working for the some victim class and - oh by the way- becoming very rich and famous for their "public" "service".

Some of them get away with their lying, others don´t. They seem to get confused about the "legal" lies that are OK (eg, "I just want to make a level playing field") and the "illegal" lies that aren´t- apparently taking money for building schools that don´t exist will still get a modern "selfless" man in trouble (if that´s what he did; not sure the article is very clear on that).

Blunt force trauma. What exactly happened? Did he jump off a building, hire someone to bash his head in, butt heads with a Billy goat, or what? Not likely he hit himself with a baseball bat or something similar. Apparent suicide? Without knowing more, it sounds suspicious. Usually if someone shoots himself or cuts an artery or jumps off a building, it is stated in the article. But to attribute it to "blunt force trauma" with no details, well it just don´t sound right.

From a very close source to the family, I understand Oliver was distraught for some time over the charges the careless reporter tied to him. He went through some pain to clear his name, but in this world the press can destroy you. It´s easy to question his idealism and easier to be cynical about money was handled, but he did manage to do something in the face of savages. It´s all gone for him, it´s tragic for his family and perhaps all that effort will be wiped out when Afghanistan and Pakistan go completely dark. I hope Jon Krakauer is haunted by at least a little guilt.

A deep freeze has settled in over the Great Lakes this winter and a new image released by NASA shows the astonishing extent of the ice cover as seen from space. NASA´s Aqua satellite captured this image of the lakes on the early afternoon of Feb. 19, 2014. At the time, 80.3 percent of the five lakes were covered in ice, according to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Earlier this month, ice cover over the Great Lakes hit 88 percent for the first time since 1994. Typically at its peak, the

Natural gas prices, up more than 45% year-to-date on cold weather demand and slumping supplies, surged 11% Wednesday, hitting their highest levels since 2009. The price on contracts for March delivery jumped to $6.22 per million British thermal units in early trading before settling at $6.15 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was the highest price since late 2009. Behind the run-up: expectations that the cold weather that´s plagued the Midwest and Northeast and parts of other regions since December will linger, keeping demand high. The jump came after the National Weather Service forecast another round of sub-freezing temperatures

Alexandria, Virginia - Ruthanne Lodato´s killer announced himself with a knock at the door. He waited on the porch, standing beside the American flag that hangs outside the house, and when the 59-year-old music teacher answered he shot her to death in her own hallway. The man then turned the gun on her elderly mother´s caretaker, wounding her before walking down the garden path and back onto the street. Mrs Lodato´s murder, committed seemingly at random and in broad daylight at 11.30am, would on its own be enough to unsettle the city of Alexandria, a wealthy suburb of Washington DC.

BERLIN - Volkswagen´s top labor representative threatened on Wednesday to try to block further investments by the German carmaker in the southern United States if its workers there are not unionized. Workers at VW´s factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, last Friday voted against representation by the United Auto Workers union (UAW), rejecting efforts by VW representatives to set up a German-style works council at the plant. German workers enjoy considerable influence over company decisions under the legally enshrined "co-determination" principle which is anathema to many politicians in the U.S. who see organized labor as a threat to profits and job growth. Conventional wisdom for 2016 goes like this: Republicans are heading toward a bruising primary while, if she runs, Hillary Rodham Clinton is the de facto Democratic nominee. And, that CW goes, that is a very good thing for the Democratic Party. Not necessarily. The positives for Democrats of nominating Clinton basically by acclamation are obvious. She is well known, well liked and a proven commodity on the campaign trail. Polling suggests she has a massive primary lead and a double-digit lead in the general election as well. And she is a Clinton. The negatives are less obvious but have both

While Obama´s lapdogs refused to bark, it was conservative media who fought for newsroom independence and got the FCC to finally back down.
