Boehner, House GOP leaders offer ‘fiscal cliff’ counterproposal

| House Republican leaders endorsed a far-reaching plan Monday to rein in the national debt that would raise $800 billion in new tax revenue, slice $600 billion from federal health programs and apply a stingier measure of inflation to Social Security benefits. In a letter to President Obama, House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and other senior Republicans suggested that the framework, first laid out by Democrat Erskine Bowles during last year’s budget battles, should serve as a starting point for budget talks aimed at averting the year-end “fiscal cliff.” “With the fiscal cliff nearing,

A partial solution to the Obama tax extensions (Bush tax cuts) is actually no solution. We are in the current situation because we delayed decisions in order to not have to make hasty decisions. Congress has been unable or unwilling to develop a solution to this ongoing problem. We are in a financial mess that we can´t spend ourselves out of. I cannot support a solution that "kicks the can down the road" for another few months knowing that we will be in this same situation 4 weeks before the next extension expires. The current House, Senate, and President are responsible for this situation. President Bush and the 110th Congress have been gone for a long time. The worst thing congress can do is to cobble some legislation together that they have to pass quickly in order to find out what is in it

How about a 50% cut in your salaries, a freeze on raises for yourselves and inclusion in Obamacare for starters, followed by 10% cuts in every department except DoD.

This is so bad, cutting retirees benefits who really need them. Do means testing on these benefits, cut 25% from the EPA, Education Department, get rid of the No Energy Department.

Time is growing short, so John Boehner should immediately invite Erskine Bowles to appear with him at a joint press conference endorsing Mr. Bowles´s budget framework as as a bi-partisan basis for getting the fiscal-cliff talks going again.
If Erskine Bowles refuses to show up to publicly affirm his own proposal, then John Boehner should speak alone with an empty chair by his side labeled ´´Reserved for Erskine Bowles.´´

Raise rates on the "Rich" in the face of overwhelming evidence that MORE revenue would result from lower rates ?
This is , clearly, a punitive measure.
As it damages the productive sector as well as the GDP as a whole it is a twofer for Barky.
As sure as groceries come from the store, Barky knows that money comes from the printing press.

#3, I´m not sure why a social security recipient would ever expect a cost of living increase. Are most annuities indexed? Aren´t most pensions a fixed amount?
Actually, I´m being a bit sarcastic (not toward #3 but economic illiterates who think a person "paid into" SS and think it´s an insurance plan, rather than a welfare program).

Pretty soon they´ll raise the SS "retirement" age to 85. Meanwhile, the lavish spending, fraud, waste, and outright foolishness will continue unabated. We´ve lost the fight, folks. Even the ones, like Boner, who are supposedly on our side are now cowering in closet, permanently folded up in the fetal position, crying their eyes out, and whimpering "Stop, stop, whatever you want...please STOP". And when it´s over, they´ll all go to nice parties every night, play golf every day, and continue to receive the lavish percs that they´ve voted for themselves. Meanwhile, we´ll be riding bicycles, eating pasta sans sauce 3 times a day, and waiting for that final decision from the Death Panel. They all should be locked in stocks, tarred, feathered, and pi$$ed on.

The GOP needs to propose that SS be means-tested in the future. It is indeed a welfare program that, like all of these schemes, has gotten out of control. Also propose that the full benefit age be raised to 68-70.
Buy television time to say that people making millions in retirement should give up their benefit. That SS is bankrupt and it must be saved. They will have to buy the time because the regular media will distort what they propose. It´s only a couple of thousand a month max benefit anyway. If you have an income of over $250,000 a year in retirement you can do without the extra two grand.
I know that this is a huge stealth tax increase but we have no options left. Our politicians have financially ruined this country. They have also encouraged a huge percent of our less intelligent population that SS will take care of their retirement years. This myth has to be busted to encourage them to be more responsible.

Don’t expect First Lady Michelle Obama to continue a high-profile role in the gun control debate. Administration officials with knowledge of the White House strategy tell The Hill the first lady will not be an active part of the debate going forward, at least in terms of gun policy. Obama will instead be focused mostly on youth empowerment, as she has in recent years, continuing her mentoring programs and “Let’s Move!” her childhood obesity initiative. In a rare move, the first lady entered the national discussion on gun control earlier this week when she delivered

I’m not sure how widely it was known that Jonathan Winters, whom Robin Williams thought the best comic of his generation, was a conservative. In any case, I sometimes used to show students in my classes on the American Founding the early scene from “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World” where the whole gang tries to deliberate about how to divide the loot fairly when they finally got to the site where the loot was hidden, and how it could illustrate . . . the “great compromise” of the constitutional convention of 1787 in Philadelphia.

As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

In Philadelphia, at a human abattoir on Lancaster Avenue, is where it ends, not where it starts. It starts with the perversion of language. It starts when the icons of a dissipated culture reduce a baby to a “fetus.” From there, Yeats’s blood-dimmed tide rolls rapidly in. Before long, a baby is not a person but a punishment, as President Barack Obama framed the matter in his familiar off-the-cuff iciness. Of course, to describe newborn children in their boundless possibilities and wonder would be to acknowledge, foremost, their humanity. That is why, instead, abortion enthusiasts must grope for words

LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends. Winters was a pioneer of improvisational standup comedy, with an exceptional gift for mimicry, a grab bag of eccentric personalities and a bottomless reservoir of creative energy.

I’ve been writing about media coverage of abortion for many years. And so have many others. If you haven’t read David Shaw’s “Abortion Bias Seeps Into The News,” published in the Los Angeles Times back in 1990, you should. That report also explains why we cover the topic here at GetReligion. But the thing is that I’m getting kind of sick of pointing out egregious bias only to see things not just remain bad but get worse. President Barack Obama typically gives the talk, focusing on a topic that´s in the news or a policy the White House is pushing. This week, Obama has asked Francine Wheeler to deliver the address instead. Wheeler and her husband, David, lost their 6-year-old son Ben in the December schoolhouse shooting in Newtown, Conn. During an appearance on MSNBC´s Morning Joe, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said expanded background checks are "not enough," and private gun sales cannot continue because they allow terrorists to buy guns in the United States. "Can a terrorist currently buy a gun in this country? Yes. Can a felon? Yes. You go to a gun show and virtually no questions are asked," Feinstein claimed. Joe Scarborough chimed in later in the segment to echo Feinstein´s claim, asserting, "So now we have al Qaeda terrorists saying, ´Kill Americans, it´s easy, just go to gun shows, get an assault weapon.´"
