| NEW YORK -- The New York City homeless man - whose gift of boots from an NYPD police officer became an online sensation - is back on the streets with no shoes. The New York Times found him Sunday night wandering barefoot in Manhattan. The paper identified him as Jeffrey Hillman, formerly of South Plainfield, N.J. Asked about the $100 all-weather boots Officer Larry DePrimo gave him on Nov. 14, Hillman says he´s hidden them because "they are worth a lot of money." He says he´s grateful for the gift, but he wants "a piece of the pie"

Comments: Surprised? I knew it would turn out like this, after all the drooly gooey sentimental stories of the cop helping the bum. Well, he´s still a bum, he sees his profit opportunities and some people can´t be helped.

How long will it be before he has a lawyer representing him?

The photo was snapped in public, where there is no expectation of privacy. Therefore, he does not have rights to the photo. If we´re going to be clinical about it.
Boots hidden? How about sold for alcohol or drugs? More likely.

I don´t think he has the law on his side regarding rights to the pic - the event was conducted in public.
This calls to mind my early newspaper days in San Francisco, when I told my editor we ought to run photos of the drunken bums of 16th Street. He said we couldn´t do it quite that way. "If there was one thing that´s worse than a drunk it´s a drunk´s lawyer," he said.

If he is homeless how the heck does he know the video went viral? Likely has a giveaway IPhone with free minutes. Even our homeless are well connected. No good deed goes unpunished. The Pollyanna in me hopes that some day there will be just ONE heartwarming story that doesn´t go south and leave me depressed at the reality that apparently everyone is looking for an angle.

The cop gave this man an opportunity to take care of himself. He´s probably had these opportunities many times courtesy of many people, including his family. He chose to throw them away to feed his addictions.
This doesn´t minimize what the officer did for him at all. Neither does it mean the other people in his life are suckers for helping him.

Up until the 1970s, people who were unable to take care of themselves were institutionalized. Then along came the courts, Nelson Rockefeller, and Geraldo Rivera, and our society decided that it was unfair, and expensive, to institutionalize those people. So in a it of liberalism, society allowed those kinds of people to live and die in the streets.

Most homeless are schizophrenic, it´s why they are on the street in the first place. They typically refuse assistance from family and friends who offer to take them in. They also tend to shun shelters as well, and all for the same reason. Their mental disorder makes them fiercely independent and they fear being trapped or controlled by those who offer them food and a safe clean place to sleep. They cannot be helped because they don´t want it. They should either be institutionalized or ignored.

This is so sad. I can´t believe the way some of you react to this unfortunate soul. The poor man is obviously not capable of caring for himself yet some of you judge him by standards you use to judge yourselves. That is not right and is anything but Christian.
In the more enlightened era of time gone by, we had both Federal and State Institutions to care for people like this. What happened is another example of liberal good intentions gone wrong. In 1963, at JFK´s urging and as part of his New Frontier, the Community Mental Health Act was passed by Congress and it closed down all Federal and State asylums. They were supposed to be replaced by local "community" centers to care for those unable to care for themselves.
JFK was killed and it never happened and multitudes were left to die on the streets and for 50 years that has happened. I´m ashamed of myself and my fellow citizens for letting it happen.

In my area, there is a homeless man who you see on the street frequently. He is often carrying a large number of personal items that gets to be larger and larger as time goes by and then one day you see him with nothing but a small suitcase again.
He comes from a well to do family who wants to get him treated, but they cannot force him into medical care...and so he continues the way he has for many many years.
I am a true believer in the preservation of liberty, however, this man is not using his liberty to his benefit and his family should be allowed to handle his affairs.

Thank you, #35, I doubt anyone would get killed for a $5 pair of boots from Goodwill...
2 examples of why I don´t think twice about passing by these people -- in Denver a few years ago, a local story about a woman who had a ´daycare´ in her home and was caught, by one of the parents, on a street corner, with their child, and a ´I´m homeless´ sign. A couple years ago, here in northern Washington, I saw a 2 guys I recognized from their familiar street corner, in the laundromat, they were discussing what corner to move to that afternoon, when one pulls out a cell phone and says ´let me call home and see if the wife´s back yet´. Then I watched them leave in a decent late model truck. Yeah, right, homeless...

As the nun once told my wife in school, "don´t give them money. Give them a ham sandwich." The police officer knew the risks here and in my mind that probably makes him even more praiseworthy, even if the risks probably came to pass and the guy no longer has the boots because he traded them for something worth $15 at most.
But it is sad that the guy did what I suspected he would do.

A wide variety of experienced politicians, civil servants and courtiers who observed at first hand the Queen’s relationship with Margaret Thatcher agree: it was (long pause, pained expression) “difficult.” Here were two women of similar age but very dissimilar backgrounds; previously strangers, they were conjoined during the most tumultuous and confrontational years of postwar politics. Among the most radical of the Thatcherite thinkers were some whose contempt for the old, flabby institutions of a weary, oversocialized country reached even to the monarchy. They (naively) tended to see the United States as a model in politics and economics,

ONLY a handful of peace-time politicians can claim to have changed the world. Margaret Thatcher, who died this morning, was one. She transformed not just her own Conservative Party, but the whole of British politics. Her enthusiasm for privatisation launched a global revolution and her willingness to stand up to tyranny helped to bring an end to the Soviet Union. Winston Churchill won a war, but he never created an “ism”. The essence of Thatcherism was to oppose the status quo and bet on freedom—odd, since as a prim control freak, she was in some ways the embodiment of conservatism.

She was 87. Thatcher was arguably the most influential British politician in recent history. The first woman to lead a major Western power, Thatcher held office for 11 years, making her the country´s longest-serving prime minister of the 20th century. When you interview a shallow, murderous liar like Billy Ayers, you should assign someone who is at least familiar with the basic facts. The Weather Underground was created in 1969, not after the Townhouse explosion which took place in 1970. CARACAS - Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles expressed outrage on Monday at the description of his supporters as "heirs of Hitler" by election rival and acting President Nicolas Maduro. The buildup to the South American OPEC nation´s April 14 vote has been characterized by highly personalized attacks between both candidates hoping to replace the late Hugo Chavez. At the weekend, Maduro compared opposition complaints about Cuban doctors working in Venezuela with the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany. "The heirs of Hitler are leading a campaign in Venezuela against the Cuban people," he said.

MOBILE, Ala. — The crippled cruise ship whose sewage-filled breakdown in the Gulf of Mexico subjected thousands to horrendous conditions tore loose Wednesday from the dock where it´s being repaired, lumbered downriver and crunched into a cargo ship. Wind gusts near hurricane strength shoved the 900-foot Carnival Triumph free from its mooring in downtown Mobile, Ala., where the ship was brought in a five-day ordeal that began when an engine fire stranded it off of Mexico in February. Hours later, four tug boats were using several mooring lines to secure the ship to a nearby pier.

In an interview by El Semanal published Sunday, Teillier spoke frankly about his role as leader and military chief of the Communist Party during the 1980s. Amid an accelerated rise in expenditure, increasing losses in state-run oil companies, and costly subsidies, Venezuela´s income is not enough for the Government, which currently faces a serious fiscal imbalance although the oil basket averages a record high of USD 103 per barrel. As a result, two devaluations have been implemented in the last five weeks so as to obtain more bolivars per petrodollars. However, it all seems that despite the significant adjustment in the foreign exchange rate, which will spur the cost of imports and therefore will hit the people, the fiscal crisis will continue.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

Chelsea Clinton has raised her profile in the last few days, which sparked the inevitable question about the former first daughter´s future: Will she ever be like Mom and Dad and run for office? Clinton, 33, essentially said "maybe" in an interview that aired Monday on NBC´s Today show. "Right now I´m grateful to live in a city, a state and a country where I strongly support my mayor, my governor, my president and my senators and my representative," said Clinton, whose father, Bill, was president from 1993-2001 and her mother, Hillary

More than 700 Special Operations veterans are urging members of Congress to back a select committee to investigate last year’s Benghazi terrorist attack, according to a letter first obtained by Fox News. The letter from the group, “Special Operations Speaks,” supports the appointment of a special committee tasked with the single mission of investigating the attack that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead, and shut down the CIA operation in an annex of the Benghazi consulate, in the Sept. 11, 2012 attack. “Congress must show some leadership and provide answers to the public

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

Amid all of the very real threats of war and stuff from North Korea, you´d think American intelligence officers want as much video footage of the enemy as possible. Well, here is one video featuring North Korean exercises and Kim Jong-Un holding a gun, and we´ll say this: they certainly get points for presentation. Remember the clap-happy report from Dennis Rodman´s diplomatic basketball vacation? This video comes courtesy of the same Youtube channel that gave us that Rodman video. It appears to be the same state news channel.(Snip for video)This latest dispatch from North Korea´s state television

The case of a same-sex Connecticut couple accused of repeatedly raping and abusing two of their nine adopted boys is headed for trial. Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors. The men had already pleaded no contest in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor — a reduction from even more serious charges related to sexual assault....
