Four years ago, President Obama followed the advice of Rahm Emanuel never to let a crisis go to waste. He proposed an economic stimulus package brimming with pork and favors for Democratic interest groups. House Republicans were fearful of crossing a new president as the recession deepened, but they mustered the moxie to vote no, unanimously. It turned out to be one of the smartest moves they ever made. Freshly reelected, the president wants to exploit a crisis again. This time it’s the fiscal cliff mess.
ok, so Obambi wants more revenue....can someone please stand up and explain that when you LOWER the overall rates, especially capital gains, then revenue to the treasury GOES UP!! He just wants the "revenge" against "the rich", amen.
Was on the flight back from DC yesterday with dead fish RAHM EMMANUEL...Better believe he was in DC to advise Obama on how to game the Republicans....and to once again get everything he wants....
Hang tough Boehner...remind the press...We the People didn´t give Obama control of the Congress ...and for a reason...so Obama wouldn´t have control of America´s Checkbook...Obama didn´t Win Everything this time because of his fiscal irresponsibility...and his wild-eyed spending
My prediction: Obama is too blinded by idealism to cut spending, so he drives us over the fiscal cliff. Remember those Bush tax cuts that were only for the rich? Now everyone pays more in taxes! Pubbies keep saying the same thing over and over and over: We offered tax hikes, Obama could not cut spending. He drove us over the cliff, not us. After a year of tax hikes, the Obamacare bills come due in January 2014. Finally, the Obamabots feel the pinch from his disasterous policies and they can´t wait to throw him under the bus. Pubbies do great in the 2014 midterms, with a presidential election close behind.
Obama doesn´t realize that the real taxpaying working citizens that are paying for his circus didn´t vote for him. His popularity and approval ratings will drop like a rock after January 1st. The voters who really count will jerk his chain big time.
NO, NO, NO! Barnes´ entire piece accepts the premise that we need to compromise these issues. That is exactly the position the Democrats want us to be in -- accepting THEIR premises that taxes must be raised on anyone. For God´s sake, Barnes, get off the "we must compromise" sled, will you?
What is wrong with making Democrats accept the GOP premise that no taxes need be raised, that spending and entitlements MUST be cut, and that it is up to the Democrats who made this mess to fix it without GOP fingerprints?
Dammit! What does it take to get thru to the GOP to quit being REactive and start being PROactive?
Who can climb through all this gobbledygook? The only impression one is left with is that the people are getting screwed. None of what I hear is confidence-inspiring that things would actually improve.
Elections have consequences and the people have spoken. Give them what they want. Something needs to make the electorate wake up. I would have thought the last four years would be more than enough. Apparently Americans are gluttons for punishment. Wobble away, GOP! You will shoulder the blame with the electorate no matter what. The media will see to that.
As proven by his astonishing statement during the first (2008) presidential debates, our president is a man who does not know a balance sheet from an income statement, nor how the two interrelate. Evidently, the same goes for financial "genius" Geithner, and currency debaser Bernanke. Yet he and the rest of the Comrades claim they are proposing a workable budget for the United States of America? They really think that we are as stupid as they are.
Yes-agree #10. This line in the sand, by the Republicans, is probably just for show. It makes for great theatrics. Oh the drama as we head to the fizzle cliff!
Then, at the last minute, the pubs flip and give Obama everything he wants, as long as he flips them a promise to cut spending some day. Everyone is happy! Obama gets to go to Hawaii after all(whew-what if he had to stay in DC? Wouldn´t wish that on him/ha ha). Boehner will say it was their responsibility to come together to do what´s, ahem, best for the country.
If CEO´s were running a corp like this, they would have been canned long ago. Any subsequent CEO delivering this level of performance would be let go as well. Yet we get to keep the same miserable players and continue the march to sky is the limit debt. Those politicians in DC are not worth what they are being paid.
[[[To strengthen their hand, Republicans would be smart to stress two things. One is the Simpson-Bowles commission’s strategy for handling the debt and deficit crisis. The Obama-created commission said uncontrolled spending is the cause of the problem, that the best way to gain more revenue is through tax reform, and that any deal must be bipartisan. Republicans agree and should say so loudly. Obama doesn’t agree.]]]
Yes! And, if it comes to it, call Obama´s bluff and go over the cliff. Then we´ll actually have more leverage. Don´t believe the MSM on that.
Most Americans don´t have a shred of economic sense. That´s why they easily jump on the ´tax the rich´ bandwagon like it will instantly solve everything and we can go on like nothing happened. I remember Clinton´s famous statement that ´even I think I raised taxes too much´. A $1.6 trillion tax hike on the investors and small business owners will crush the economy. Obama knows this. It is the hapless morons who voted for him who have yet to figure this out.
#24, I too remember that Clinton statement, "even I think I raised [your] taxes too much."
As I recall, he made that statement in front of a group of businessmen in TX -- a group who were decidedly cool in their reception of Clinton ... thus prompting his admission!
Yet this is ignored today by Dem propagandists who claim that the our economy "flourished" under Clinton´s ´92-´93 tax hikes. NOT TRUE!
It was only after the GOP swept Congress in ´94, and imposed some degree of fiscal control, that our economy brightened into the halcyon days of the mid-to-late ´90s -- falsely credited by journos to Clinton.
#5 going over the cliff and having taxes go up on everyone will only be blamed on the republicans, and they will lose the house in 2014. that is what O and his minions are counting on; that is why they are not negotitating. It´s been working for them - why change now??
GOP House and Senate members should stand firm on spending cuts but more importantly they must also have a cohesive and strong public relations strategery to explain why the spending cuts are essential.
The reality of the situation is that if the Republicans do hold line and we go over the cliff, the only ones that stand to be hurt are those who actually have jobs of own small businesses. The wealthy won´t like it, but it won´t change their life style. And the 47%(?) that don´t pay taxes simple won´t care. That is unless their government check stops coming. Then they will riot in the streets and demand that their freebees continue unabated.
FTA " Republicans are in a stronger position than in 2009. Obama isn’t. He won reelection thanks to a negative campaign of historic proportions. He has no mandate. And now he’s made the mistake of thinking he’s more popular and powerful than he really is. This is how second terms crumble. " Really Fred ? Do you still think the media will ever criticize anything St Obama does ? Republicans Bad . Obama Good. Majority of Americans are morons.
It almost doesn´t matter what the House Republicans do. A majority of Americans voted for disaster, and they´re about to get it. Unfortunately, those of us who know better are also stuck on the sinking ship.
The one and only important point Barnes made is that BO spent the last 2 years "proselytizing" for tax increases.
And what did the Republicans do?
Did they listen to Tea Partiers? did they enlist their help? engage their wisdom? Did they study Hayek, Reagan, history, Marx and other utterly failed economic harridans? Did they learn the language and how to communicate??????? NO NO NO NO
Sorry folks...boehner is already wobbly...has replaced every reliable conservative on house committees with his lackeys...prefers power over principles...This kenyan powered TITANIC ship of state will steam bravely into the abyss with the media spouting continuous jedi mind games "These are not the droids we want, move along" to a public who is more interested in big government gifts stolen from the rich than in truth...
Now that i had a chance to read the posts...what reality are we living in? Come on folks, obama wants to drive the thing over the cliff...how else will eh be able to dramatically expand (again) the government...i marveled at the audacity of the man for four years...he has a plan and is well along...they aren´t flying by the seat of their pants, they are FUNDAMENTALLY TRANSFORMING this country...W A K E U P P E O P L E ! ! ! !
Kindness, (noun): the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. The dictionary offers a simple explanation of the word. But what the definition doesn´t reveal is how to actually be kind. Today is the fourth annual Kindness Day UK and David Jamilly, the event´s founder, says being nice should play a far larger part in our day-to-day lives. The 58-year-old can speak with authority on the subject, having appeared on Channel 4´s Secret Millionaire in 2010 where he gave away £75,000 of his own money to a trio of good causes. To mark Kindness Day UK (and World Kindness Day, which
WASHINGTON –Just 106,000 Americans successfully signed up in October for health coverage through President Obama’s healthcare law, the administration announced Wednesday in a report that underscored damage from the botched rollout of the law. The tally falls well short of administration hopes that as many as 500,000 people would select a health plan in the first month of enrollment. Enrollment has been particularly weak in the 36 states whose new insurance marketplaces are being run by the federal government. Fewer than 27,000 consumers signed up for coverage on a federally run marketplace. These federal marketplaces rely on the malfunctioning healthcare.gov
House Speaker John Boehner’s breakfast was interrupted this morning by Carmen Lima, 13, and Jennifer Martinez, 16, two young immigration activists who wanted the powerful congressional leader to hear their families stories of immigration hardship. Boehner was eating at Pete’s Diner, his regular breakfast place of choice in D.C., when he was approached by the two teens from the Fair Immigration Reform Movement, a pro-immigration reform group. Lima explained how she has not seen her deported father since she was 10. “So how would you feel if you had to tell your kids at the age of ten that you
President Barack Obama issued a statement yesterday congratulating Hawaii for legalizing same-sex marriage, a move he said "exemplifies the values we hold dear as a nation." "I want to congratulate the Hawaii State Legislature on passing legislation in support of marriage equality," said Obama. "With today’s vote, Hawaii joins a growing number of states that recognize that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be treated fairly and equally under the law. Whenever freedom and equality are affirmed, our country becomes stronger. By giving loving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry if they choose, Hawaii exemplifies the
More than a dozen major retailers across the country are opening on Thanksgiving this year — but Massachusetts bargain hunters will have to wait for Black Friday to indulge their passion for shopping. In other states, Walmart, Macy’s, J.C. Penney and Staples will be among the stores opting for an early start to the holiday shopping season. But the Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards has not issued a statewide permit allowing retail stores to open for Thanksgiving or Christmas since at least 2002. Businesses such as restaurants, pharmacies and hotels are exempted, said Lauren E. Jones of the Executive Office
Washington- A private meeting on Capitol Hill with House Democrats and White House officials on Wednesday became heated when rank-and-file members expressed frustration about continued Obamacare problems, according to multiple sources in the room. One congressional Democrat who attended the meeting said senior Obama administration officials Mike Hash and David Simas really "got hit" by House Democrats about everything from the troubled website to the broken promise that people can keep the insurance plans they like. The most pressing political challenge for House Democrats will come this Friday, when they will have to vote on a House Republican plan by
WASHINGTON- The White House warned Congress imposing new economic sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program could lead the United States on a "march to war." The heightened rhetoric came as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was to meet behind closed doors Wednesday with members of the Senate Banking Committee, which is weighing new sanctions against Iran´s energy and financial sectors, similar to a measure approved by the House in August. Kerry will appeal to skeptical lawmakers of both parties to wait at least a week before considering the new wave of punitive sanctions, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki
Two Baptist chaplains said they were forced out of a Veterans Affairs chaplain training program after they refused orders to stop quoting the Bible and to stop praying in the name of Jesus. When the men objected to those demands they were subjected to ridicule and harassment that led to one of the chaplains leaving the program and the other being ejected, according to a federal lawsuit filed Friday. The Conservative Baptist Association of America is suing Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki – alleging two of their chaplains were openly ridiculed by the leader of San Diego-based VA-DOD Clinical
A House bill that would allow insurance companies the option of offering old healthcare plans is gaining dozens of co-sponsors ahead of a vote this week. Sixty-eight House members signed on to the bill Tuesday alone, giving the measure sponsored by Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) a total of 156 co-sponsors. Nearly all of the sponsors so far are Republicans, but two Democrats have joined the Keep Your Health Plan Act: Reps. John Barrow (Ga.) and Mike McIntyre (N.C.). Both are top 2014 targets for the GOP, as each Democrat represents a district easily won by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in 2012.
Former President George W. Bush — who has largely shunned media appearances in favor of a bit of post-presidency privacy — is poised to appear as a guest next week on “The Tonight Show.” The ex-commander-in-chief will sit down with host Jay Leno on Nov. 19. The last time Bush was a guest on the NBC show was back in 2010 during a book tour. Bush spokesman Freddy Ford told the cable network the 43rd president wanted to swing by the “Tonight Show” set before Leno gives up the host chair next year, saying, “President Bush is going to be
Going only by “Adriana,” the woman whose smiling visage was used as the face of the early weeks of Healthcare.gov told ABC News she had been “cyberbullied” after the website’s toxic rollout. “They have nothing else to do but hide behind the computer,” Adrianna told ABC News’ Amy Robach. “They’re cyberbullying,”(Snip) In response to rumors that Adriana, who is from Colombia, was not a legal citizen, she told ABC that her husband and son were both U.S. citizens, and that she was a permanent resident seeking citizenship.
In my last column, I proposed some explanations for why many conservative parents have left-wing children. In a nutshell, American parents who hold traditional American values — such as belief in small government as the basis of liberty, in a God-based moral code, that American military strength is the greatest contributor to world peace and stability, or in American exceptionalism, not to mention in the man-woman definition of marriage or in the worth of a human fetus — are at war with almost every influence on their children´s lives. This includes, most importantly, the media and the schools. Here, then are
Washington: A woman, who claims to have been a classmate of Barack Obama, said that the president was gay and used cocaine in school. In a bizarre interview, Mia Marie Pope told right-wing preacher James David Manning that she believes Obama was not only active within the gay community, but also a heavy cocaine user during his years in Hawaii. Pope said that Obama always portrayed himself as a foreign student, adding that girls were never anything that he ever was interested in, but he would get along with older white gay men. She added that Obama at that time was also
President Barack Obama´s approval ratings have dipped to a record low in another poll — this time from Quinnipiac University. According to the poll, respondents disapprove of Obama´s job performance by a 54-39 margin. His approval rating of 39% is worse than his previous all-time low of 41% in the Quinnipiac survey, which came after a bruising fight over raising the nation´s debt ceiling in 2011. And for the first time ever, most people (52%) say that Obama is not honest and trustworthy. Only 44% say that he is honest and trustworthy. The only individual issue on which Obama scores
Amazing stuff via Mediaite. The “Keep Your Plan Act” is Fred Upton’s bill, which Jay Carney spent a few minutes attacking at today’s press briefing because it would make canceled plans available to all consumers, not just the ones who’d been enrolled in those plans before. That would be a disaster for the insurance industry. Healthy people would flee the new, more expensive plans for the resurrected cheaper ones, leaving no one in the new risk pool except sick people with very expensive treatments. That means either heavy losses for insurers, steep premium hikes next year to make up the
James O’Keefe, the guerrilla videographer who helped bring down ACORN (the “community organizing” group that Barack Obama worked for as a lawyer and trainer) and got NPR’s president fired, is back. This time, his undercover investigators focused on Obamacare’s “navigators,” the nearly 50,000 people who, in the words of the Department of Health and Human Services, “will serve as an in-person resource for Americans who want additional assistance in shopping for and enrolling in plans” on the Obamacare exchanges (at least when they’re finally working). The total value of grants doled out for nonprofits and community organizations to hire navigators
Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) will ask two oversight agencies for a full-blown investigation into the problems surrounding the ObamaCare launch. Hagan, who is up for reelection in 2014, is asking her Senate colleagues to co-sign a letter asking two agencies to conduct “a complete, thorough investigation to determine the causes of the design and implementation failures of HealthCare.Gov.” “These problems are simply unacceptable, and Americans deserve answers and swift solutions,” Hagan writes in a letter obtained by The Hill. “Taxpayers are owed a full and transparent accounting of how the vendors contracted to build the site failed to launch it
We were just asking for it. This is, essentially, what Century Foundation fellow Michael Cohen took to the pages of the New York Daily News on Monday to say. In a profound scolding, Cohen diagnoses America’s “immaturity” as demonstrated by the backlash against President Barack Obama over to his oft-repeated and false claim that every American who was happy with their health insurance would be able to keep their health insurance. This was never true. The president and his staff were aware this was not true as early as February, 2010. Some media outlets reported that, for millions of Americans,
Swampscott, Massachusetts Selectman Barry Greenfield is pushing a measure to give police the authority to conduct home searches to check proper storage of firearms. Greenfield said "state law requires Massachusetts gun owners to keep their firearms locked away or rendered inoperable." There are "600 registered gun owners in [Swampscott]," and the selectman wants police to be able to drop in unannounced, enter the homes of each gun owner, and verify compliance. According to the Swampscott Patch, Greenfield has spoken with Swampscott Police Chief Ron Madigan about this issue, and has spoken with other selectmen. At least one of the selectmen-
Those sophisticates at Time magazine made a funny. They put Chris Christie on their cover with the headline, "The Elephant in the Room." Get it? Elephant. Christie. Time magazine did a junior high fat joke right there on its cover. Time´s executive editor Michael Duffy explained the cheap shot this way: "Well, he´s obviously a big guy. He´s obviously a big Republican. But he´s also done a really huge thing here this week." The "huge thing" wasn´t only winning re-election as New Jersey´s governor, but doing it by appealing to a broad range of voters in a very blue state
Fourteen years ago, I was asked to be a keynote speaker at the Richmond County Women´s Republican Club annual dinner. I had started my column at the Staten Island Advance the year before, and as an Hispanic who had grown up in Spanish Harlem, many Republicans were surprised that I was a conservative. It was my first speaking engagement and one I accepted reluctantly, but I felt that it was an opportunity to offer some advice to the Republican Party about winning over the voters in the barrios and the inner city.
WASHINGTON — While the country is immersed in Obamacare headlines and a congressional tussle over delays and mandates, the Obama administration is stealthily moving toward unprecedented control over private property under a massive expansion of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Water Act authority. The proposed rule, obtained by the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee in advance of EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy’s testimony at a Thursday oversight hearing, widely broadens the definition of waterways over which the federal government has jurisdiction to as little as a water ditch in a backyard. The Clean Water Act redefinition of “waters of the United States”
Perhaps the most entertaining facet of watching the scales fall from liberal´s eyes about Obamacare is the absolute shock they experience when their liberal friends chastise them for complaining. Lori Gottlieb, a contributing editor for The Atlantic and a psychotherapist, writes in the NY Times about her conversation with Blue Anthem insurance and the reaction by her "friends" on Facebook when she posted about it: THE Anthem Blue Cross representative who answered my call told me that there was a silver lining in the cancellation of my individual P.P.O. policy and the $5,400 annual increase that I would have to
Last week, the media went apoplectic after a 60 Minutes report on the terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012, turned out to be mistaken. Much of the report was based on the testimony of one Dylan Davies, a security contractor who said that he had climbed over the wall of the consulate in Benghazi and seen the body of Ambassador Chris Stevens. It turned out that Davies was lying, and 60 Minutes was fooled. Media Matters, which uncovered the lie, promptly declared victory in its war on behalf of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, with founder David
