Doctor´s Diary: are you taking

Some points to help those worried about overmedication and polypharmacy. My article last week about the hazards of polypharmacy has prompted further accounts from readers of being coerced (seemingly) by their family doctors into taking medications that they would rather do without. But as one lady points out, expressing no doubt the dilemma of many, she is apprehensive about raising the question of over-medication for fear of "antagonising" her doctor. This is clearly a tricky situation, so it is useful to know that GPs are required to conduct a "Medicines Review" every 15 months for all patients taking four or

This is what happens when doctors treat symptoms, rather than the underlying problem.

Patients want a quick fix, not to be told that a change in lifestyle. The reason, it´s harder than taking a pill...

It´s no fun having an addiction if you can´t doctor and pharmacy shop. That´ll all be taken care of once the government seizes control of your electronic medical records. It´s all for your own good, don´cha know.

Doctor visits will soon be done by Skype to save money.

I take certain meds that relieve a problem I was born with. It´s a controlled substance and I have to show my licenses every time I get it. I do get tired of being taken for a drug addict. I think a lot of this medicine stuff is ridiculous anyway. What we need specific prescriptions for, other countries have as over the counter. It´s all about control.

I take a prescribed medicine that requires me to drive to the doctor´s office every 25 days (I have to call 48 hours ahead) to pick up a paper scrip, which I then have to drive to the pharmacy and deliver, then go back 3 hours later to pick up after showing my driver´s license.
I am 70 years old and live on a fixed income and gas is expensive.

There are reports of a "massive" attack in northern Nigerian border town of Bama, a day after a presidential spokesman said the army was "winning the war" against Islamist militants. Borno state senator Ahmed Zanna told the BBC the attack on Bama had lasted for five hours on Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, spokesman Doyin Okupe said the military was "on top of the situation". More than 245 people have been killed this year alone by suspected Islamists. [Snip] Governor Kashim Shettima called for reinforcements and said the insurgents were "better armed and better motivated" than the security forces.

The European Union raised the spectre of sanctions against Ukraine´s leaders after the death toll from the latest outbreak of street violence rose to 25, following a night of fighting which police made territorial advances in Kiev´s Independence Square. The EU called an emergency meeting of the bloc´s foreign ministers for Thursday to discuss the violence, Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Commission president saying he expected "targeted measures against those responsible for violence and use of excessive force". Such calls were echoed by a number of European governments, who largely blamed President Viktor Yanukovych for escalating the crisis by failing

Barack Obama has penned a handwritten apology to an angry professor after suggesting that learning a trade would be a better career choice than studying for an art history degree. During a speech at a General Electric plant in Wisconsin, the President said that ´folks can make a lot more potentially with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art history degree.´ He was inundated with letters from art historians and journalists all furious at his remarks - but one professor´s comments caught his eye - and he sent a handwritten apology to her.

Denmark has provoked the fury of Muslim and Jewish groups by banning Halal and Kosher slaughter on animal rights grounds. The new law, which came into force yesterday, has been criticised by religious groups. But minister for agriculture and food Dan Jørgensen said that "animal rights come before religion". European regulations require animals to be stunned before they are slaughtered, but exemptions can be made on religious grounds. Some Halal and Kosher consumers believe it is acceptable for the animal to be stunned before it is slaughtered, but many others insist that the animal is fully conscious when it has

The East Coast has been pushed to the brink by its third snowstorm in a week, which caused 5000 more flights to be cancelled or delayed Tuesday and a rock salt shortage--and now warmer weather and rain could bring flooding. The latest winter storm blew in early yesterday, dumping a mix of rain and light snow on the tri-state area and secured this month´s spot as New York´s second snowiest February on record, with a total of 28 inches falling on Central Park. The winter average for the city is 27 inches. So much snowfall has led to critical shortages

Migrants are to face tough new checks on their wages before becoming eligible for benefits under a new Government crackdown to be announced today. Newcomers from European countries will be expected to prove they have earned at least £150 a week for three months to qualify for income support, housing benefit and other hand-outs available to people in low-income jobs. But the measure is unlikely to satisfy critics who believe that migrants without a significant record of paying taxes and national insurance contributions should not be allowed to claim any benefits at all. The White House´s director of national intelligence admitted on Monday that the National Security Agency and other federal government departments should have been transparent with the American people when it first began collecting a broad swath of phone records. James Clapper mused openly about how the PRISM program, authorized by Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act, was received by global media and the American public, conceding that the scandalous outcome would likely have been different if the government had been less secretive. ´I probably shouldn’t say this, but I will,´ Clapper told The Daily Beast.

The landmark deal to destroy Syria’s arsenal of chemical weapons is in deep trouble. Under the agreed timetable, all of the most dangerous “priority 1” chemicals should have been shipped out of the country by December 31 last year. In fact, barely 11 percent--or 77 tons out of 700--has actually been removed. The total destruction of Syria’s chemical warfare capability is supposed to be complete by June 30. It’s already pretty clear that this won’t be possible--“without a shadow of a doubt”, according to Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, formerly the commander of Britain’s defences against chemical and biological weapons.

The White House may have to scrap its plans to aggressively promote a 40 percent national minimum wage hike now that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found that the move would likely cost the U.S. 500,000 jobs by the second half of 2016. The CBO´s report, released Tuesday afternoon, also estimated that it would pull 900,000 low-income Americans above the federal government´s poverty line. The White House didn´t answer questions about whether that trade-off is acceptable to President Obama, but Senate Democrats have pushed hard for legislation that would implement his goal of driving the minimum wage far above its current

Why Hillary Clinton´s past is

There´s a debate going on about Hillary Clinton´s past. If she runs for president in 2016, should Republicans reach back to the scandals of her years as First Lady? Or should they focus on more recent times, especially her tenure as Secretary of State, to build a case against her? The GOP doesn´t have to choose. Of course Clinton´s recent experiences are relevant to a presidential run. But so are her actions in the 90s, the 80s and even the 70s. It´s not ancient history; it reveals something about who Clinton was and still is. And re-examining her past is entirely consistent with practices in recent campaigns. In the 2012 presidential race,

America’s Founding Fathers fiercely held to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—values which Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed align seamlessly with Obamacare. Pelosi explained why the law is “very sound policy” during a press conference Friday: To go to back to our founders once again, they sacrificed it all for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This law, the affordable care act, is about a healthier life, the liberty to pursue your happiness. That is solid policy, and the mandate is central to that. The weirdest thing about John Kerry´s weekend speech on climate-change—other than the fact that this is the same guy who in 1997 voted to forbid the U.S. from signing the Kyoto Protocol—is that it begins by quoting something Maurice Strong said at the U.N.´s 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro: "Every bit of evidence I´ve seen persuades me that we are on a course leading to tragedy." Maurice who? Mr. Strong, a former oil executive from Canada (he was Pierre Trudeau´s pick to run state-owned Petro-Canada in the mid-1970s), was for many years the U.N.´s ultimate mandarin.
