Ford to recall Escapes,
Fusions over engine fires

Los Angeles Times, by Jerry Hirsch

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 12/1/2012 11:12:24 PM

Ford Motor Co. will recall about 73,000 Escape SUVs and 16,000 Fusions because of engine fires. All the recalls involve 2013 models equipped with a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine, the automaker said. The issue does not affect Escape or Fusion models with other engines. (Snip) Drivers who have encountered the problem said they noticed high engine temperatures followed by fires. At the same time, a message on their instrument cluster would say, "Engine power reduced to lower temps" or "Engine over temp, stop safely." Some also said their instrument clusters sounded a chime and turned on a red

Comments:
Too many gadgets plugged into a four-cylinder engine. Think current needed and back off, Ford.

A Maryland teenager is the first openly gay Boy Scout to become an Eagle Scout, the organization’s highest rank, according to the advocacy group Scouts for Equality. High school senior Pascal Tessier is already awaiting the next challenge, which will come this summer when he turns 18. Until recently, gays had been barred from the Scouts. After years of debate, the organization eliminated the ban for minors effective Jan. 1, but kept the restriction against adult Scouting leaders. Pascal, who turns 18 on Aug. 5, has said he will apply to become an adult leader and see how the Scouts respond. “On Aug. 4, he’s an Eagle Scout and has the

At Wednesday’s White House press briefing, ABC’s Jonathan Karl asked point-blank if the Obama administration’s handling of Syria has been an “absolute failure.” ABC didn’t report the exchange on Wednesday evening, however. Karl asked White House press secretary Jay Carney, “isn’t it time to acknowledge that easing the humanitarian crisis in Syria, that the President’s policy has been an absolute failure?” He cited national intelligence chief James Clapper, who told Congress that the crisis has become an “apocalyptic disaster.” Carney bristled and defended the administration’s record. Karl wouldn’t let him get far noting the U.S.

Welcome to the era of the ‘Big Flaunting FLOTUS’. Yesterday a picture of Obama dogs Bo and Sunny dining at a table set with fine crystal and china, bling-wearing Sunny sporting a necklace tweeted by Michelle Obama, travelled the Net. The Tweet photo, captioned “Bone Appétit”, had some news sites like Thomas Lifson’s great American Thinker, headline the Michelle Tweet “stunning insensitivity”. An apt headline under circumstances of the day where the children of many average Americans do not get to eat as well as the Obama dogs and daughters. With Hollywood attendees still belching stale champagne from last night’s

Don’t mock the beleaguered Nook owner. That could have been you. Five years ago, when the nation’s largest chain of bookstores released an e-reader that it promised would best Amazon’s Kindle, could you blame the poor souls who bought in to Barnes & Noble’s vision of the future? In 2011, Consumer Reports proclaimed the Nook the best e-reader in the land, saying it surpassed the Kindle in just about every way. Well, that sounds pretty definitive, doesn’t it? No wonder your aunt bought you one for Christmas. Things haven’t played out well since. After failing to douse Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes & Noble has spent the last year

New York - A new study has added to growing evidence that yearly mammogram screenings do not reduce the chance that a woman will die of breast cancer and confirms earlier findings that many abnormalities detected by these X-rays would never have proved fatal, even if untreated. The research, published on Wednesday in the British Medical Journal, is the latest salvo in a decades-long debate over the benefit of mammograms. The 25-year study of 89,835 women in Canada, aged 40 to 59, randomly assigned the volunteers to receive either annual mammograms plus physical breast exams or physical exams alone.

Karachi — Eleven Pakistani policemen were killed Thursday when a suicide car bomber struck their bus, the latest in a series of near-daily attacks since the government called for peace talks with militants. The bombing in the commercial hub of Karachi, which wounded 47 others, came as Pakistan has been negotiating with the Taliban to end a seven-year insurgency. Munir Sheikh, a senior police official, told reporters the bomber struck in the early morning. "Apparently it was a suicide car attack as an explosive-laden car hit the police bus transporting officials. So far 11 policemen have died." Another official, Farooq Awan who heads a special

Two entities must replace Derek Jeter: the New York Yankees and Major League Baseball. The Steinbrenners may have the easier job. The Yankees will have a new shortstop in 2015. Jeter made that official Wednesday, announcing his retirement effective at the end of this season. The Yankees don´t have an obvious heir in the farm system, but rest assured that Brian Cashman will identify a successor — through free agency, trade or promotion — at some point in the next 14 months. From that standpoint, the timing isn´t bad. Hanley Ramirez, Asdrubal Cabrera, J.J. Hardy, and Jed Lowrie will be free agents next winter.

Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi said the prisoners had been released from a detention facility near the Afghan capital, Kabul, and would be sent back to their respective home areas throughout Afghanistan. The U.S. embassy in Kabul called it a "deeply regrettable" move that ran counter to a 2012 agreement on detainees. "The Afghan government bears responsibility for the results

Reports that the United States may target another U.S. citizen for death because of his alleged involvement in terrorism are troubling, especially in light of unanswered questions about the drone attack in Yemen in 2011 that killed the U.S.-born Anwar Awlaki. This time, the potential target is said to be in Pakistan. If the United States is again to deliberately take the life of one of its citizens without due process of law, leaders from the president on down must, at the very least, offer specific and credible proof that such action was absolutely necessary to prevent imminent attacks on Americans and that capturing the suspected terrorist was impossible.

Want to make a really bad time for yourself on social media? Register an opinion about Dylan Farrow´s letter published by the New York Times on Feb. 2 stating that her father, Woody Allen, sexually abused her some two decades ago when she was 7. Better yet, register an opinion that stops short of totally vilifying either Allen, who despite the general ick factor of his attraction to younger women was never charged with a crime, or Farrow, who makes a powerful case despite its lack of concrete evidence (not unusual in such situations). Pretty soon — probably within seconds — you'll have the Facebook equivalent of a sun shower.

It´s no surprise that Barack Obama´s authoritarian streak is revealing itself at last. It was always there; clearly apparent in his rhetoric (e.g., his envy of Chinese president Xi Jin-ping´s powers), his abuse of executive orders, his threats against Congress, his sultan with fly-whisk attitudes toward his opposition, and even his vacations, which reek more of third-world trash gamboling on the Riviera than any American leader (George W. Bush settled his mind by clearing brush in Texas, Reagan at his ranch in Santa Barbara. Obama unfortunately finds the brush already cleared in Martha´s Vineyard and Hawaii.)

Michelle Obama chose Venezuelan-American designer Carolina Herrera for the gown she wore Tuesday to the state dinner honoring French President Francois Hollande. President Obama has repeatedly suspended parts of the Affordable Care Act without the consent of Congress. The latest unilateral action happened Monday night, when the administration announced another delay of the employer mandate, the law´s provision that businesses with more than 50 employees must provide their employees with insurance starting in 2014 or pay large fines. In July, the president decreed the mandate wouldn´t be enforced at all in 2014, and last night administration officials declared that businesses with 50 to 99 employees wouldn´t be penalized in 2015. Republicans have denounced such actions as "lawless." But if what the president has
