Mexico City - Enrique Peña Nieto, a telegenic and politically savvy former state governor, was sworn in as president of Mexico on Saturday in a raucous ceremony marked by violent protests that left several people wounded. (Snip) The protests reflected discontent among some Mexicans who accuse Peña Nieto and his Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) of using bribery and other tricks to win the election. An election tribunal ruled against formal complaints and judged the July 1 election legitimate. In Saturday’s ceremony in the lower house of congress, Peña Nieto received

Wait for Mexico to spiral out of control. What we have seen to date is nothing. This is the cartel´s man, bought and paid for with blood money. Me duele a Mexico and I mourn for my own country as well. Our own election was as false as the Mexican one.

The dims could learn a thing or two about corruption from the PRI. It will take some heavy lifting to convince a lot of people on both sides of the border that it has changed its ways.

New satellite images taken three days ago have revealed 122 potential pieces of debris from the missing Malaysian Airline flight MH370, Malaysia’s Transport Minister says. (Snip) Earlier satellite images from China, Australia and France showed items floating in the southern Indian Ocean, where the plane is believed to have crashed, leaving no survivors. “Yesterday, on the 25th of March, the Malaysian Remote Sensing Agency, MRSA, received new satellite images from Airbus Defence and Space, which is based in France, and these images were taken on the 23rd of March,” he said this evening. “MRSA analysed the images and in one area of the

Back in 2001, during a press conference on ballistic missile defense, then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld tried to explain the relative ease of procuring certain weapon technologies, and the danger that might pose to the United States. [W]ith the end of the Cold War and the relaxation of tension in the world, we’ve seen that proliferation of these technologies is pervasive. And that means that a trained ape can figure out that over the coming period, more people are going to have exceedingly powerful weapons, weapons more powerful than ever in the history of the world, biological weapons, nuclear weapons, chemical weapons.

Malaysian authorities say new satellite images from France have identified about 122 objects floating in the Indian Ocean, about 2557km from Perth. Minister of Defence and Acting Minister of Transport Hishammuddin Hussein said the satellite images were taken on March 23. He said objects ranged from 1m to 23m in length, and some were brightly coloured. Malaysian authorities say they have received new satellite images of a possible debris field. Mr Hussein said they received new satellite images from France yesterday. “Australia, China and France have already released satellite images showing objects that may be related to MH370,”

The Obama administration is prepared to give prospective Obamacare enrollees another half-month to signup for insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act website, healthcare.gov, treating the law´s March 31 regulatory deadline as a formality for Americans who claim they tried in earnest to sign up in time. During a March 12 congressional hearing, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told Texas Republican Rep. Kevin Brady that there would be no such extensions. ´Are you going to delay the open enrollment beyond March 31?´ Brady asked. ´No, sir,´ she replied. The Obama administration will grant extra time to Americans who say they are unable to enroll in health care plans through the federal insurance marketplace by the deadline set for the end of March, the Washington Post reported late Tuesday. All consumers who have begun to apply for coverage on HealthCare.gov, but who do not finish by Monday, will have until about mid-April to ask for an extension, federal officials confirmed to the newspaper. The paper reports that users will have a chance to check a box on the website indicating they tried to enroll before the deadline, though the government will not try to determine whether the person

Virtual currencies like bitcoin will be taxed like property — not currency, the Internal Revenue Service said Tuesday. The IRS says bitcoin is not legal tender. You can´t use it to pay your taxes. However, if you receive wages in bitcoin, you have to pay taxes on it just like you would if you got paid in dollars. Or if you got paid in chickens. The IRS issued a series of 16 questions and answers Tuesday to clarify the tax treatment of virtual currencies like bitcoin. In general, the IRS says it will apply the same rules that govern other barter transactions. If you receive wages in bitcoin, they would be taxed at their fair market value at the time you were

The New York Times reported today that the White House will ask Congress to end the National Security Agency´s open-ended collection of data about Americans´ calling habits. Income growth was slower in 2013 than the year before in every state, according to new federal data. But don’t worry, it was all just the result of a year-old political fight. (Snip) But compare each state to its own recent record, and you’ll see incomes decelerating. Why? Well, the “fiscal cliff” — the end-of-2012 fight over tax hikes and spending cuts. One of those expiring cuts, the payroll tax cut, was putting money into the hands of Americans. Once it expired, that money started flowing back to the government. Also, the comparison isn’t quite fair. Income growth in 2012 was artificially higher due to the fiscal cliff because of concerns

Judging by the recent royal temper tantrums and the parade of op-eds suggesting ways to soothe the Saudis, President Obama’s trip to Saudi Arabia on Thursday is shaping up as one of the more awkward diplomatic encounters this side of the “Red Wedding.” Saudi officials have made no secret of their displeasure over the United States’ support of democratic change in Egypt and across the region, its refusal to leap into a Syrian quagmire and its role in the nuclear negotiations with Iran. The Saudis have hardly been assuaged by U.S. deference to Riyadh on their human rights abuses or passive acceptance of Saudi support for Egypt’s

Doing so would make good on a 2010 pledge by the

A pair of potentially catastrophic cases will be argued before the Supreme Court on Tuesday. These cases are brought by privately held, for-profit corporations that are arguing their religious convictions should preclude them from offering employees the health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers don’t want to allow their employees’ insurance to cover some forms of birth control because, contrary to medicaland scientific evidence, they believe some birth control causes abortions. Corporations are not people. Corporations cannot have religious views. If religious rights are extended to corporations, it puts us on a slippery slope where any private company

Former President Jimmy Carter is back in the news this week publicizing a new book about women’s rights. A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the sweeping acceptance of gay marriage in recent years is owed in large part to Christianity. Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,

One of them was found drunk and passed out in a hotel hallway, the people said. The hotel staff alerted the U.S. Embassy in the Netherlands after finding the unconscious agent Sunday morning, a day before Obama arrived in the country, according to two of the people. The embassy then alerted Secret Service managers on the presidential trip, which included Secret Service
