Thrill and agony in
House office lottery

Politico, by Kate Nocera

Original Article

Posted By:MissMolly, 12/1/2012 6:00:12 AM

A rowdy group of 70 House freshmen gathered in the Rayburn building on Friday for a monumental moment of their new lives in Washington: the congressional office lottery. It’s one of the few times when it’s just fine for politicians to start measuring the drapes for their new digs. Suffice to say it was not your typical Hill event. Members and staff pore over maps of office buildings, desperately hoping to draw a low number and land prime working space. They picked their numbers and scampered off on an office scavenger hunt, trying to determine

Comments:
Anyone else remember when some of the formerly influential Dem committee chairmen balked at giving up their offices to the incoming 1994 GOP wave of new members?

Since when did the Politico make an effort to humanize the House? Apparently as long as the rest of us have been waiting to see exactly how fast the odious laws and regulations from Fed Gov will bankrupt all of us and leave us homeless like incoming Rep Sinema says she once was.

Does this mean they already have their priorities lined up? Wonder where doing the job they were elected to do rates?

A Tale of Two Chickens: Capitol
Dining Remains Separate and Unequal

We hate to break it to the hungry, huddled masses that routinely seek out House side eateries for sustenance, but when it comes to that guiltiest of pull-apart pleasures, fried chicken, you should be calling “fowl.” Mind you, it’s not that the picnic staple is not available to rank-and-file patrons in either chamber. But the dining experience varies wildly depending on where you are perched. The Golden Brown Standard To be fair, the governing bodies in charge of catering to each side of the Capitol blatantly advertise that they’re serving competing foodstuffs. “House Fried Chicken” is all you’ll get from the Capitol Market

Disgraced former cyclist Lance Armstrong is liquidating some assets amid the Texas-sized legal woes that may end up costing him the lion´s share of his ill-gotten gains. Armstrong is selling his palatial home near Austin, Texas, potentially freeing up a few million bucks that various plaintiffs will surely try to retrieve for themselves. Among those suing Armstrong is the Department of Justice, which seeks tens of millions of taxpayer dollars that went toward sponsoring Armstrong´s corrupt U.S. Postal Service cycling team.According to the Austin American-Statesman, businessman Al Koehler filed a deed of trust in Travis County last week

As John Ekdahl says, it’s awfully hard not to see a cynical motive in a conservative senator from a blue state suddenly “evolving” on gun control. I can’t believe I’m saying this after spending years rooting for Toomey primary challenges to Arlen Specter, but … is someone going to end up primarying Pat Toomey? Or will Pennsylvania conservatives follow the Scott Brown rule and stay out of his way in the belief/knowledge that no one they nominate will have a better chance of winning their state than the current somewhat unsatisfactory Republican incumbent? Matt Lewis identifies Toomey and immigration point

Rand Paul´s Speech at Howard

Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky took his message of GOP inclusion to historically black Howard University Wednesday, where he received a polite but tough reception. It was likely the fairest hearing any prominent Republican was going to get, given the GOP´s long-standing struggles with African-American support. And the fact that Paul decided to speak at Howard in the first place did more for him and a party focusing on minority outreach than anything he actually said. "Some have said that I´m either brave or crazy to be here today," he told the audience of faculty and students.

So far, Joel Osteen seems prepared to turn the other cheek. The target of an elaborate internet hoax that tricked many people into believing that the charismatic leader of Lakewood Church had forsaken his Christian faith, Osteen refused to say whether he planned to take legal action against those responsible. “You know, I’m really not angry. I don’t feel like a victim,” Osteen told ABC News. “I feel too blessed, that life is too short to let things like this get you down.” In a coordinated April fool’s prank, a man who has so far remained anonymous

Hollande’s Camel Slaughtered in Mali

A couple of months ago, François Hollande was presented with a baby camel by local authorities in Timbuktu in appreciation for France’s military action against Islamist militants in Mali. The animal did not come quietly. Hollande had initially hoped to have the camel vaccinated and transported to a Parisian zoo, but decided it would be easiest for the French and best for the beast if it were entrusted to a local Timbuktu family who had suffered damage to their property from French tanks. It appears that his trust was misplaced.

After listening to the latest secret recording made public by Mother Jones, there’s no question that Ashley Judd — and the Democratic Party — dodged a serious bullet when the actress decided not to run against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).While I agree with The Fix that the dust-up over said recording of a McConnell campaign opposition research meeting is “much ado about not much” since such research is a bipartisan ritual, there was enough oppo gold to sink a Judd candidacy. Justin Timberlake concerts for King Obama… but no Blue Angels for Americans… KomoNews reports the following: SEATTLE — The annual summer Blue Angels show over Seattle has fallen victim to federal budget cuts. Seafair spokeswoman Melissa Jurcan said the festival received official word from the Navy on Tuesday morning that the fighter jet demonstration team would not be making the trip to Seattle for 2013. Sequestration prompted the Department of Defense to prohibit military aerial demonstrations along with other cost savings measures, and the Navy said it was cancelling all remaining Blue Angels performances for the year.

It´s a story that could be ripped from the headlines of the National Enquirer. A family feud. A multimillion dollar estate. Dueling allegations of fraud. Accusations of kidnapping, theft, and stalking. Tales of lavish spending that include a private jet chartered to transport 18 dogs. And in the latest chapter, ongoing in a Florida courtroom today, a wealthy mother so fed up with allegedly being asked for handouts that she has filed a restraining order against her son. MIAMI -- Lilly Pulitzer hosted parties in her bare feet and wasn´t afraid to get a little messy - just as long as she looked good and had fun, too. In the late 1950s, the Palm Beach socialite had time to spare and a wealthy husband who owned citrus groves, so she opened an orange juice stand just off the island´s main shopping street. Pulitzer needed to hide all the juice stains on her clothes, though. Instead of just putting on an apron, she asked her seamstress to make some sleeveless dresses

An attempt by Colorado lawmakers to ban welfare recipients from withdrawing their benefits at ATMs located inside strip clubs was killed by Democrats Thursday night, even though the state House’s third-ranking Democratic legislator supported the measure. Democratic Rep. Dan Pabon lent his support to the Republican-led proposal, offered as an amendment during a debate on the state budget Thursday night, because it would hew to a similar federal rule, according to the Denver Post. Pabon introduced a bill on the issue two years ago, but it didn’t clear the state Senate. State welfare recipients receive their benefits

Add the name of Michelle Lynne (ne Robert) Kosilek to the list of modern phenomena the Founding Fathers would definitely not appreciate being blamed for. Little did they know what havoc they would someday wreak by adding the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution to prohibit “cruel and unusual punishment.” Now comes Kosilek, a convicted wife murderer doing life without parole. He/she is claiming that it would be cruel and unusual punishment to deny him/her a sex-change operation — excuse me, “gender-reassignment surgery.”Not to get too graphic, but Kosilek is begging for elective amputation of a body part.

Whatever big-busted fantasies crawl around the ex-congressman’s delirious noggin, la Weiner made his next goal as clear as the skin of the wholesome college students he craved: He relishes being Mayor Weiner. Please, shut up this clown. These days, the genitally obsessed Weiner has nothing much to do, except sit in his lavish Manhattan apartment and — the inhumanity! — change the poopy diapers of his 16-month-old son, Jordan. Worse, Weiner is living under a kind of house arrest, sentenced to take extreme grief

Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

Within the next few decades, carbon emissions could cause global temperatures to rise between 4 and 11 degrees Fahrenheit, melting ice caps and causing sea levels to rise. And yet, a lot of people find it hard to really care about climate change. But don´t be fooled: Climate change will affect you. Here´s a brief sampling of ways that warmer temperatures will suck the fun out of your life: 1. Your flights will be more turbulent
