America not paying its
fair share

Orange County Register [CA], by Mark Steyn

Original Article

Posted By:supersid, 11/30/2012 4:59:03 PM

Previously on "The Perils of Pauline": Last year, our plucky heroine, the wholesome apple-cheeked American republic, was trapped in an express elevator hurtling out of control toward the debt ceiling. Would she crash into it? Or would she make some miraculous escape? Yes! At the very last minute of her white-knuckle thrill ride to her rendezvous with destiny, she was rescued by Congress´ decision to set up... a Super Committee! Those who can, do. Those who can´t, form a committee. Those who really can´t, form a Super Committee – and then put John Kerry on it for good measure.

After reading this I am more convinced than every that we should go over the cliff. It is the only way that any spending cuts will ever happen. And when a greater number of working and tax paying Americans have skin in the game, they will not look so kindly at those who are the recipients of government largesse.

Mark Steyn is a clever talker and writer. Read his pieces here and listen to him on Rush when he visits. A great critic. But I keep waiting for him to come up with a solution or two. What he´d do to fix it. Still waiting.

Let the Bush rates go, and go back fully to the Clinton rates. For every dollar in increased taxes from the rich, there will be 3 dollars from the low and middle income brackets. Let the Democrats blame the GOP. We´ll see how popular Obama and Reid are in 3 months. The investments in Green Energy and Education sound much better before $200 are taken out of your paycheck to pay for them. And way till they are then asked about a carbon tax.

End taxes on businesses, make America the tax haven of the World. We´ll grow our way out of this mess, which is the only way we have a chance of survival.
Ever visit Grand Cayman and wonder WHY there are hundreds of banks there?
democrats have made businesses the boogie men here..and that is wrong..business is the Goose that lays the golden eggs..strangle the goose, no more golden eggs.

I love the first part of the article setting the tone of these debates. They really do play as bad melodramatic serials. The solution is simple, modernize the tax code, privatize entitlements and cut the size of government. The problem is it´s no longer possible. We have a growing class of people who are addicted to government. We are the French.

Fun read. Fun because of Mr. Steyn´s writing skills. He doesn´t tell us anything we don´t already know but he does tell it to us in such an entertaining way.
He certainly offers solutions - cut spending because there is not enough enough there to pay it down for more than a year or two.

WASHINGTON — Senate Democratic and Republican leaders reached final agreement on a deal to reopen the government and extend its borrowing authority into February, with votes in the House and Senate possibly to begin this afternoon, according to aides familiar with the negotiations. Senate Republicans have gathered for a final review, but lawmakers have given no indication they will block it. A government shutdown into its third week yielded virtually no concessions to the Republicans other than some minor tightening of income verifications for people obtaining subsidized insurance premiums under the new health care law.

In 20 or so years of political speechwriting, the only condition I have ever set down in advance of being hired is that I would never, under any circumstances, assist any candidate or officeholder in promoting the cause of abortion. (Snip) Come to think of it, I first learned about the “abortion rights” cause and about the ruthlessness of industrialized farming around the same time, at the age of 13 or 14, and my reaction to both was similar: You just don’t treat life that way. Sanford, Fla. - George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot an unarmed black teenager, igniting a national debate on racial profiling and civil rights, was found not guilty on Saturday of the second-degree murder of Trayvon Martin. He also was acquitted of manslaughter, a lesser charge. After three weeks of testimony, the six-woman jury rejected the prosecution’s contention that Mr. Zimmerman had deliberately pursued Mr. Martin because he viewed the hoodie-clad teenager as a criminal and instigated the fight that led to his death. Just when I thought the George Zimmerman "trial" couldn´t sink any lower, the prosecutorial limbo dancers of the State of Florida magnificently lowered their own bar in the final moments of their cable-news celebrity. In real justice systems, the state decides what crime has been committed and charges somebody with it. In the Zimmerman trial, the state´s "theory of the case" is that it has no theory of the case: might be murder, might be manslaughter, might be aggravated assault, might be a zillion other things, but it´s something.

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'
