A treasure haul salvaged from a sunken Spanish galleon sunk by British warships in 1804 was unveiled today. The loot was found in the wreck of Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes and had been at the centre of a five-year legal battle between a U.S. salvage company and Spain. US firm Odyssey Marine Exploration found the lost treasure off Portugal´s Atlantic coast in 2007. At the time, the treasure was estimated to be worth $500m (£316m).

I´m really astounded by this whole thing. An American company spent their time, resources and energy recovering a ´lost treasure´. The gold and silver apparently originally was taken from central/south America and was lost at sea. Now comes the Spanish government claiming not only all the booty found (for which they expended nothing to obtain), but the time, resources and energy expended to find it, as their own. Not satisfied with that, they also want this American company to shell out the money to pay for the legal expenses to seize the treasure. And then I wonder, if a US military plane was used to ferry the loot back to Spain, who paid for that… us I bet.
Governments have become useless for anything other than stealing from the productive peoples of the world.

Spain has no right to anything ever - big old pirates for years when they figured out how to make a ship that would not sink. Judges like this one should be kicked off of the bench, however, he is probably a permanent idiot like a couple of our supremes. Tossing it back in the sea would be ideal and tell them they can have it if they can find it.

#3 is worse yhan that. Spain would go into a south american area, enslave the natives, and work them to death in the gold and silver mines.
Spain has no more right to that salvage operation product than I do.
But the federal district court judge is on the side of spain. There should not even be U.S. jurisdiction over the matter. I thought the laws of the sea were pretty clear up until now.

MYFOXNY.COM - The plans for a ship that has been dubbed Titanic II will be unveiled in New York, according to Australian billionaire Clive Palmer said. Palmer, one of Australia's richest men, announced plans in April to construct the replica Titanic with exactly the same dimensions as the original. He will release the design on the Intrepid Museum on Manhattan's West Side during a gala on Dec. 4, according to AFP. The dinner menu will reportedly be the same menu as Titanic passengers were served on the day it say on April 15, 1912.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs.
