New ethanol blend could

USA Today, by Gary Strauss

The AAA says the Environmental Protection Agency and gasoline retailers should halt the sale of E15, a new ethanol blend that could damage millions of vehicles and void car warranties. AAA, which issued its warning today, says just 12 million of more than 240 million cars, trucks and SUVs now in use have manufacturers´ approval for E15. Flex-fuel vehicles, 2012 and newer General Motors vehicles, 2013 Fords and 2001 and later model Porsches are the exceptions, according to AAA, the nation´s largest motorist group, with 53.5 million members. "It is clear that millions of Americans are unfamiliar with E15,

Comments:
It matters not whether ethanol destroys your engine, yields a net loss in energy, costs more, produces more smog, wastes food and water, creates unnecessary fertilizer runoff in our waterways.

What matters is that legislation (signed by GWB, no less) mandates increased ethanol consumption, and the EPA (which the GOP refuses to defund) insists we use it, no matter the cost.

Mathmatics not my strongest suit, I can still cipher with the best of the chalkboard folks.
It takes 11 units of energy to produce one unit of ethanol from corn, and that produces 10 units of energy.
Maybe we should grow more corn, but I don´t think that is the problem.
Why can´t Congress do the math?

I drive a prius. It computes and displays gas mileage every five minutes. It also displays the performance of every tankful of gas if you reset the display when you fill up. I average between 55 and 57 mpg driving on summer fuel. When the switch to winter furl is made the change is immediately noticeable. The average drops to 47-48 mpg. The cost to the public is billions of dollars.

Since ethanol increases the octane, more timing is needed for the ethanol via the ECU, and there is no feasible way to do this for the masses. Only newer vehicles might be capable of tweaking parameters. I am able to take advantage of the ethanol via custom ECU tunes on my Mustang GT for performance purposes, but to the masses it just causes problems. Oddly enough the top e85 is more desirable than race fuel since it´s octane is basically through the roof (for cheaper) and nets some serious gains on a high compression engine.

They were some of the strangest animals to walk the Earth: wombats as big as hippos, sloths larger than bears, four-tusked elephants, and an armadillo that would have dwarfed a VW Beetle. They flourished for millions of years, then vanished from our planet just as humans emerged from their African homeland. It is one of palaeontology´s most intriguing mysteries and will form the core of a conference at Oxford University this week when delegates will debate whether climate change or human hunters killed off the planet´s lost megafauna, as these extinct giants are known. George Osborne was accused of ‘insulting’ middle-class voters last night after claiming that making them pay higher tax rates is ‘good for them’ because it makes them feel successful – and more likely to back the Tories. Conservative MPs were stunned when the Chancellor made the explosive remark at a secret meeting at his Downing Street office, the contents of which have been leaked to The Mail on Sunday. The disclosure came as Mr Osborne is poised to announce a Budget boost for the low-paid by raising the threshold for income tax to £10,500, while rejecting pleas to stop more

Mount Laurel — New Jersey homeowners’ tax bills increased less than 2 percent for the second year in a row, a celebratory Gov. Chris Christie announced Thursday at a town hall in Mount Laurel. The average property tax bill in New Jersey grew 1.7 percent in 2013, Christie told the crowd of more than 400. It was a slightly higher rate of growth than in 2012, when the average bill grew 1.6 percent — but a far cry from the rampant growth of the 2000s, when bills would soar by 7 percent or more each year. Nashville, Tenn. — The State Attorney General says Tennessee can lawfully use the electric chair on death row inmates if drugs used for lethal injection are not available. Attorney General Bob Cooper´s written legal opinion was issued this week as state lawmakers consider a bill that would allow condemned prisoners to be electrocuted if lethal injection is thwarted by big drug companies or the courts. The move comes against the backdrop of a European-led boycott on sales of sedatives to American prisons and legal challenges to drugs made by compounding pharmacies. Tennessee has not executed a prisoner since 2009. Part of

The Chinese cyber spying against the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II took place in 2007 under what U.S. intelligence agencies codenamed Operation Byzantine Hades, a large-scale, multi-year cyber program that targeted governments and industry. Defense officials said the stolen data was obtained by a Chinese military unit called a Technical Reconnaissance Bureau in the Chengdu province. The data was then

By now it’s settled on most people, including Democrats, that the loss of Alex Sink to David Jolly in Florida’s 13th Congressional District was, in the words of the New York Times, “devastating” to Democrats. It’s a district Ms. Sink carried in her unsuccessful race for governor against Rick Scott, a district that Barack Obama carried in his two elections, and a district that demographically now favors Democrats. In addition, Ms. Sink raised more money and ran a better campaign than Jolly. Even Bill Clinton lent his efforts to her campaign. And yet she lost. What should particularly alarm Democrats is
