Republicans reject White House
fiscal cliff proposals as incomplete

Guardian [UK], by Richard Adams and Dominic Rushe

Original Article

Posted By:earlybird, 11/29/2012 6:50:48 PM

The first serious proposals from the White House to solve the looming "fiscal cliff" of tax rises and budget cuts appear to have been rejected out of hand by Republican leaders in Congress. Treasury secretary Timothy Geithner is reported to have offered a set of proposals that include increasing tax rates on the wealthy, a one-year postponement of scheduled cuts in defence and domestic spending, and $400bn in savings from Medicare and other entitlement programmes. The proposals (Snip)include a $1.6tn tax increase, a $50bn stimulus package and new presidential powers to raise the federal debt limit without congressional approval.

Comments:
From the lefty Guardian. Boehner and McConnell rejected the proposals as "incomplete". And the "new presidential powers to raise the federal debt limit without congressional approval" couldn´t have been a big seller. Article includes description of the back and forth...

Yes, you see, the Republicans rejected it. It isn´t possible for the Democrats to put forth a bad proposal in the eyes of the leftists. The Republicans must be the ones to blame!

The Dems have planned to "go over the cliff" all along. It guts the military budget, which is what they want. It raises taxes and the MSM will blame the Repubs. Entitlements will see a cut, but the "entitlements game" is still on. Promising entitlements is how the Dems get re-elected. It´s essentially buying votes. It really doesn´t matter if there are cuts, they just get back in the game and promise more entitlements, and get re-elected. Democratic politicians have nothing to lose if we go over the cliff.

Sending Little Timmy to negotiate anything is shoving the Republicans faces in it. He is a nasty, slimy, sarcastic little pr#ck and I can imagine his utter disdain when delivering the proposals. I realize that politics involves posturing and negotiating but we are getting enough of that from the Campaigner-in-Chief. I want to hear more from Boehner and McConnell sticking to their guns and not wavering. There has been sufficient time since the election for us to realize we are screwed for the next four years. Please let us not roll over and ask for more.

Stimulus packages which increase funds paid to government employees or government contractors, are stupid, evil, wasteful and counterproductive. For every ten billion you spend, three billion is for wages and produces about a billion in taxes.... and another day older and deeper in debt, but someone may gain some political contributions along the way... mentioning no names, of course.

take a moral stand on spending money our children have to pay back. forget about small tax rate increases for the rich. just a diversion by the Dimms.

Debt Ceiling is where the battle lines should form.

The Repugs should allow 10 montha of deficit spending this year; 9 months of deficit spending next year; 8 months of deficit spending the year after, etc.

No increase in Debt Ceilings without a budget.

These are positions the Repugs can take with wide moral support.

Please remember that this debacle was set up by the cry baby caving to Obama giving him everything he wanted in last summer debt ceiling negotiations. Has he learned anything when he sees Obama doubling down on his demands? I doubt it. Since there never is a budget the only lever left is the debt ceiling. Never raise it and warn anyone buying US treasury paper that if they make loans to Obama it will be Obama not the nation they will need to collect their trillions from. The cry baby has the power of the purse. This is the only thing Obama doesn´t have. Use it to stop him!

I´m sick of the pet names given to John Boehner and Mitch McConnell. Say, if you think you can do better, you campaign and get elected to a seat so you can do better.

The task at hand is large and we Republicans rip our own to pieces. I´m sick of it. How is it that the Democrats can stick together through all of the ugliness, corruption, and dirty politics but we Republicans (Conservatives and Tea Party) shred our own. I don´t get it. One hair is out of place and we aren´t voting for this person. When are we going to learn?

# 32 is spot on.
365 days a year ,Republicans tear each other apart on every talk show and blog , with the grandaddy of cannibalism being the primaries.
The media plays the right like a fiddle.
They know exactly how to phrase things or report half quotes so the right will become en fuego.
Keeping the right in a constant state of
agitation is their goal and
the goal of some talkers on the right-for ratings.
The Democrats always stick together
or keep their disputes private.
FTA- " Republican Representative Steve King said he and fellow conservatives could live with raising taxes " .
"Conservatives might be able to figure how they can go home and rationalise a vote that included a revenue increase and or a tax rate increase," King said.
Don´t know if this is the full quote from King, but, it´s the one the media picked.
Boehner says no way,
it´s " class warfare ".

Keeping the Bush top tax rates seems to be beyond the courage of the GOP. The next best option from the health of the country perspective is to revert to the Clinton rates for ALL and letting the extensions of unemployment benefits expire. There is frankly little current incentive to work a $40,000 a year job compared not working and collecting benefits. The disincentives will go away if the GOP doesn´t cut a deal. And the Sequester guarantees some savings, again if the GOP doesn´t cut a deal.

Re GOP unity the reality is that the present GOP establishment leadership is timid and ineffective - they are selling us out. This leaves us with only two choices. Take over the GOP or start a third party which leaves us in the wilderness for many more years of Rat destruction. I think the take over is the best choice!

#35 You are spot on! To succeed, however, the takeover needs to be from the bottom up. The top down approach of Ross Perot never had a chance due to the structure of the Electorial College. There is a good start in 30 states. The RINOs need to be removed from office. But, you will get Democrat replacements unless the new Republican is seen as a worthy replacement. Just look at the last election.

The really offense part of the offer is to allow Obama to take over the finance controls reserved for Congress( the House that is) by the Constitution.
The GOP problem hinges on the concept by the far right that everyone but they are the damn RINOs.
How I hate that overworked four letter non word.It screams of self centered defeat before we even start.
When will the truth sink in --that the far right is at only 20% but they destroy every effort to work together due to single issue thinking and self righteous destruction even if the GOP does win the presidency.
Most GOP are center focused conservatives and all the independents voting with them are too.

Here´s a thought... Since the Republicans will be blamed anyway, I suggest that they go on all the Sunday talk shows and offer to give Obama EVERYTHING he wants. Say that elections have consequences and it´s time we let Obama show us he can lead. It will be a tough sale to the base but someone has to be bold. The only proviso is that Obama and Congress must present a fiscal plan in writing and in time to make it public prior to the first of the year. Above all, it MUST have his signature as well as the Democrat leaders in Congress. It will then be known that whatever happens will be their doing and theirs alone. That way we may be able to gain seats in the House and Senate to reverse much of what he proposed. Otherwise I believe we will lose seats.

An eye-catching A.P. story, published Thursday, revealed that, in 2010, the United States Agency for International Development (U.S.A.I.D.) covertly deployed a social-media program in Cuba in the hope of bringing about a Cuban Spring. The network, called ZunZuneo, was offered to Cubans via the country’s mobile-phone network as a free text service, and attracted forty thousand subscribers before mysteriously ending operations in 2012. A Chinese ship searching for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 detected a "pulse signal" in the southern Indian Ocean Saturday, but there was no evidence yet that it was linked to the missing plane, state media said. The signal picked up by the vessel´s black box detector had a frequency of 37.5kHz per second, the official Xinhua news agency said -- identical to the beacon signal emitted by flight recorders. The announcement came nearly a month after the Malaysian jetliner disappeared off radar screens en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board, triggering an unprecedented international search. EVERETT, Wash. — As medical examiners painstakingly piece together the identities and lives of the people killed when a mudslide wiped out a small Washington community, a mystery troubles them. One of the 30 bodies found does not fit with descriptions on the missing persons list, which, as of Thursday included 15 people, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff´s Office. The only clue to the man´s identity is his gold molars, said Heather Oie, operations manager at the Snohomish County Medical Examiner´s Office. He might have been someone who was on the highway or going for a hike.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., has accused the panel´s top Democrat of prompting the Internal Revenue Service in 2012 to target a conservative organization applying for nonprofit status. Issa said records obtained last week from the IRS show communications from the office of ranking member Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., about True the Vote, a Texas-based, nonprofit conservative group that aims to prevent voter fraud. The communications at one point involved Lois Lerner, the ex-IRS official who Issa´s panel is poised to hold in contempt of Congress on Thursday for refusing to provide testimony about her

Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron compared Republicans that oppose President Barack Obama to the Ku Klux Klan. Speaking to USA Today Tuesday on the 40th anniversary of his then record-breaking 715th home run, the 80-year-old Aaron said that Republicans are hindering Obama’s job performance. “Sure, this country has a black president, but when you look at a black president, President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud from all of the Republicans with the way he’s treated,” Aaron told USA Today Sports.

Attorney General Eric Holder strayed from prepared remarks to slam the way he was “treated” by a House committee the day before, calling it evidence of “ugly and divisive” civil rights challenges facing him and President Barack Obama. Speaking to the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network at its annual convention in New York on Wednesday, Holder talked about the state of civil rights today and brought up a House committee hearing Tuesday that grew contentious, according to video from Mediaite and reports from outlets including Capital New York. “The last five years have been defined by significant strides and

A new review is questioning the effectiveness of two key drugs enlisted in the fight against influenza and in turn the investments by governments to stockpile the drugs in the event of a global flu outbreak. The antiviral drugs Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir ) are commonly used to treat influenza in healthy adults and children. In the case of Tamiflu, the drug does shorten symptoms of influenza by about half a day - as the manufacturer suggests - but there is insufficient evidence to support claims that it reduces hospital admissions or serious complications, such as confirmed pneumonia or

Barack Obama got quite the handful on Thursday, April 10, but it was all for a good cause! As the President of the United States was boarding Air Force One with his wife Michelle Obama, a gust of wind blew up her skirt. Barack quickly stepped in and grabbed the First Lady´s billowing skirt to help her avoid a wardrobe malfunction and embarrassing Marilyn Monroe moment. Earlier in the week, another famous lady on the global stage suffered a similar snafu, but no one was around to help her -- not even her prince!

Although the news media and Hollywood relish telling stories about horrific crimes and serial killers, they are strangely silent about Dr. Kermit Gosnell, an abortionist who killed living, viable babies by snipping their spinal cords with scissors, and who is “America’s most prolific serial killer,” said actor Kevin Sorbo and his wife Sam Jenkins in a video to promote funding for a movie about Gosnell. “Kermit Gosnell is America’s most prolific serial killer,” says Kevin Sorbo, who starred in the TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. “For more than three decades he was an abortion doctor in Philadelphia, where he

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) could face up to five years in federal prison for obstructing a Congressional proceeding. On Wednesday, Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) and five Subcommittee Chairmen on the committee sent a letter to Ranking Member Cummings demanding an explanation for his staff’s queries from the IRS, why the Minority hid these efforts from the Majority, and why the Ranking Member denied such actions by his staff at a February Subcommittee hearing: “Although you have previously denied that your staff made inquiries to the IRS about conservative organization True the Vote that may have led to additional

As a former President of The Most Powerful Country In The World, George W Bush has significantly greater access to world leaders than most budding artists. (Snip) Art critics have pointed out that a number of the 30 portraits in the exhibition appear to be based on images thrown up by a cursory search of the person´s name in Google Images. In some cases the portrait seems to have been based on the very first image result on the search engine. Rather remarkably, even the portrait of his own father, someone who he surely could have asked to sit for him, appears to be based on an Associated Press portrait which appears on the first page of

Solar power has won the global argument. Photovoltaic energy is already so cheap that it competes with oil, diesel and liquefied natural gas in much of Asia without subsidies. Roughly 29pc of electricity capacity added in America last year came from solar, rising to 100pc even in Massachusetts and Vermont.[Snip] The technology is improving so fast--helped by the US military--that it has achieved a virtous circle. Michael Parker and Flora Chang, at Sanford Bernstein, say we entering a new order of "global energy deflation" that must ineluctably erode the viability of oil, gas and the fossil fuel nexus over time.
