William Shatner expected to attend
USS Enterprise inactivation

Virginian Pilot, by Mike Hixenbaugh

The last time Capt. Kirk got this close to the aircraft carrier Enterprise, it was only after traveling 300 years back in time. But that was fiction. On Saturday, the man who played James T. Kirk in the original "Star Trek" television series is expected to see the iconic warship up close, the Daily Press is reporting.

I remember as a boy living on the base, Hunter Point, in SFO seeing the Enterprise come into berth. She was/is a beautiful sight to see. Thank you for your stellar service from a once great and proud nation.

KEWL!!! He is always fun to watch. Shatner´s entire loooong career of work makes him a favorite. ...We saw him just last night in an old episode of, ´´The Big Valley,´´ on the INSP channel, our new favorite channel.

It´s a darn shame that the next class of nuclear aircraft carrier (USS Gerald R. Ford-class) does not yet feature the name USS Enterprise.

No offense toward former Presidents Ford or Kennedy, but USS Enterprise is a grand and important name in the US Navy, especially with respect to Naval Aviation. That the next two ships to be built (assuming BHO and his successors don´t weaken this nation further) will be named USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-79) and USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-80) is a shame. While the carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) had a distinguished career, neither its namesake nor that of the soon-to-be CVN-79 carries the traditions and history of the US Navy as does the USS Enterprise.

Right now there is a movement afoot to name CVN-80 (if its concstruction is ever commenced) USS Enterprise, however, I fear that CVN-80 will be named after yet another politician.

#5 - To paraphrase ADM Rickover: "Enterprises don´t vote!"

At the risk of coming across as a stick in the mud, I don´t support bringing Hollywood shtick into the solemn and traditional ceremony of a warship decommissioning. If he wants to show up and sit in the crowd, fine. The vessel served this country for a half-century as nobly as the men who manned her and were occasionally killed while doing so. But maybe I´m just getting old - we´re in the obama era now...

Right out of SNL..

Herb Goodman: Everyone, please, can I have your attention? I have an announcement to make. Due to low Nielsen ratings, we at NBC have decided to cancel "Star Trek".

Captain Kirk: Fire at my command!

Herb Goodman: On your way out, stop by the cashier´s office and pick up your checks.

Captain Kirk: Set phasers on "stun." Fire!

Dr. McCoy: They´re not firing, Jim!

Captain Kirk: Try "kill!"

Dr. McCoy: Nope, still nothing.

Herb Goodman: You´ll make sure the property department gets those things back ,won´t you, fellas?

Mr. Spock: Most peculiar, Captain.. I can only conclude that they possess some sort of weapons deactivator, in which case I shall merely render him unconcious with my famous Vulcan nerve pinch.

Dr. McCoy: For God´s sake, man, we´re on a five-year mission to explore space, the final frontier, and dammit, we´ve only been out three years!

Herb Goodman: Sorry, but it´s those Nielsens. If it was up to me, of course..

Dr. McCoy: Forget it, Bill. We lost. It´s over. Are you coming, Leonard? [ Spock attempts nerve pinch on Dr. McCoy ] Knock it off, you joker!

Except for one thing.

The carrier in the movie was not the Enterprise it was the USS Hornet in Alameda.

On Sunday evening, award-winning actor and prominent left-wing activist Alec Baldwin announced that he was leaving "public life"--and blamed "Roger Ailes. And Fox. And Breitbart." In an extended rant to Joe Hogan, posted on vulture.com and published in New York magazine, Baldwin recounted his run-ins with paparazzi, his gay slur controversies, and his ill-fated talk show on MSNBC--but he reserved special resentment for Breitbart. "There is a core of outlets that are pushing these stories out. Breitbart clutters the blogosphere with ´Alec Baldwin, he’s the Devil, he’s Fidel Baldwin,´" Baldwin claimed. Audio of an internal VA meeting obtained by TheDC confirms that VA officials in Los Angeles intentionally canceled backlogged patient exam requests.“The committee was called System Redesign and the purpose of the meeting was to figure out ways to correct the department’s efficiency. And one of the issues at the time was the backlog,” Oliver Mitchell, a Marine veteran and former patient services assistant in the VA Greater Los

Former Vice President Dick Cheney responded Monday night to the Obama administration’s proposal to cut the U.S. Army to its lowest point since before World War II. Calling into Fox News’ “Hannity,” Cheney declared the proposed cuts to be “absolutely dangerous” and “just devastating.” “I have not been a strong supporter of Barack Obama. But this really is over the top. It does enormous long-term damage to our military,” Cheney said. ”They act as though it is like highway spending and you can turn it on and off. She may not look anywhere near her 76 years but Jane Fonda says she is well aware of her age. The Hollywood legend – who has made her career in an industry which isn´t exactly kind to aging actresses - admits she has been brought to tears on more than one occasion recently as she comes to terms with her own mortality. In a thoughtful blog post entitled ´Crying´, which has since been removed, Jane wrote: ´[I´ve been thinking], how come my tears are so close to the surface? Mitt Romney on Tuesday joined a growing chorus of Republicans urging the Arizona governor to veto a bill that would allow business owners to cite their religious beliefs in refusing service to gay people. The former Massachusetts governor tweeted at Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R), saying it “is right” to veto the bill passed by the state legislature last week. Brewer has not said whether she will sign or veto the measure. However, a number of media outlets have reported people close to her expect her to veto it. Brewer told CNN she would weigh both sides before deciding the right thing to

It has the makings of a royal mess for “King Barack.” Monday morning’s Supreme Court argument about the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases went badly for the Obama administration — so much so that the real question before the justices seemed to be how severe the EPA’s loss would be. The administration’s solicitor general, Donald Verrilli, pleaded with the justices to recognize the “urgent problem” of climate change, because the “threat to future generations gets worse” with each passing year. But as the argument played out, the court’s swing justice, Anthony Kennedy, made clear that he

Were he alive today, Richard Nixon would have to doff his hat to Barack Obama. Compared with how the Obama administration has swept under the rug the Benghazi attacks of September 11, 2012, Nixon’s attempt to cover up the Watergate burglary was rank amateurism. To be fair, Nixon’s team of Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell, and Dean were not in the same league as Obama’s, which includes not only his cabinet but most of the national media and much of Congress. If a president were intent on covering something up—something big, such as an illegal gun walking operation to Mexico or a dereliction
