| Tyranny: The media praised Cuba for slapping taxes on its impoverished citizens for the first time, calling the move "market-oriented" and "modern." In reality, it´s just a new kind of theft from the same old dictatorship. To hear Reuters tell it, you´d think that Cuba, a brutal communist dictatorship for 53 years, has been a tax-free haven for all its lucky citizens. "Most Cubans have not paid taxes for half a century, but that will change under a new code starting Jan. 1," the newswire chirped, noting that the new taxes on private profits begin in the 35% vicinity.

A former vice mayor exposed himself and masturbated in the direction of at least three different women while driving his car at 90mph, it emerged today. The women testified against former Mount Carmel Vice-Mayor William Blakely in Tennessee court last week and all described in graphic detail how he would get their attention while they were driving and then hang his penis out the car window. Victim Kelly Street testified: ´After the waving, it turned into a lot of beeping, him grabbing his chest area, and asking me going "please, please" [clasping hands together] with his hands, may I… show me yours.´

Rights activists reacted with indignation on Wednesday after Singapore´s High Court rejected a petition to repeal an archaic law criminalising sex between men. In a ruling issued on Tuesday, the court said it was up to parliament to repeal a controversial provision in the penal code known as Section 377A, whose constitutionality has been questioned by a gay couple. "The issue in the present case no doubt is challenging and important, but it is not one which, in my view, justifies heavy-handed judicial intervention ahead of democratic change," Judge Quentin Loh said in his verdict.

During a rally held on Tuesday with workers, Venezuela´s acting President Nicolás Maduro announced a rise in the minimum salary of 38-45% that would be implemented in three stages. The first 20% would be implemented in May, from USD 325.55 to USD 390.66. The next increase (10%) would be adopted in September, bringing salaries up to USD 429.73. A final adjustment would be enforced in November by 5-10%, based on inflation. The president in charge also announced the creation of "workers´ groceries," aimed at bringing state-run food network Mercal to state-run companies so that workers can directly buy foodstuffs at their workplace.

ONLY a handful of peace-time politicians can claim to have changed the world. Margaret Thatcher, who died this morning, was one. She transformed not just her own Conservative Party, but the whole of British politics. Her enthusiasm for privatisation launched a global revolution and her willingness to stand up to tyranny helped to bring an end to the Soviet Union. Winston Churchill won a war, but he never created an “ism”. The essence of Thatcherism was to oppose the status quo and bet on freedom—odd, since as a prim control freak, she was in some ways the embodiment of conservatism.

Speaking in Ohio this week, the Youngstown Vindicator reports, veteran investigative journalist Bob Woodward recalled an “unflattering” story about a dining experience with former Vice President Al Gore. According to the local paper, Woodward “told an unflattering, but amusing story about sitting next to former Vice President Al Gore at a dinner, saying being with him was taxing.” “To be really honest, it’s unpleasant,” the journalist added of his experience with Gore. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. In a stunning end to one of the most aggressively unsuccessful tenures in retail history, JCPenney (JCP) last night announced that CEO Ron Johnson would be leaving effective immediately. Myron Ullman, Johnson´s predecessor at JCPenney, takes office as CEO. When Johnson was initially wooed by JCPenney, it was to serve as CEO with Ullman as Chairman. In January 2012, Ullman was unceremoniously removed from the board. Gone with Ullman was any control the Board of Directors had over Ron Johnson and his control of JCPenney resources.
