A cliff of their own choosing
Washington Post, by George F. Will

With a chip on his shoulder larger than his margin of victory, Barack Obama is approaching his second term by replicating the mistake of his first. Then his overreaching involved health care — expanding the entitlement state at the expense of economic growth. Now he seeks another surge of statism, enlarging the portion of gross domestic product grasped by government and dispensed by politics. The occasion is the misnamed “fiscal cliff,” the proper name for which is: the Democratic Party’s agenda. For 40 years the party’s principal sources of energy and money — liberal activists, government-

Really good points about the history and success of the GI Bill which was essentially a voucher. Points about growing government choice and less individual choice are also great. The tax argument misses the point. The real reason to raise the rates on the rich is that the GOP is associated in the minds of the voter with the rich. If everyone pays more taxes they are going pay a great more attention to where the money goes. It will cost the Dems dearly.

How worried are people about the fiscal cliff when the #1 search item for Christmas is Ugg Boots? Do these things have jet propulsion in the heels or something? Why are we allowing web sites that encourage young girls to be anorexic? How can we be spending $30 billion a quarter on student loans and have a skilled labor shortage?

I recommend we take the dive off the fiscal cliff. This is the only way to get the mandatory domestic spending cuts. Once off the cliff the House (because that is where all budget matters must originate) pass a permanent tax relief bill reinstating the Bush Tax rates. Let Obama and the Democrats vote against middle class tax relief, good for 2014. Then, pass a second bill to relieve the military of 1/2 the mandatory budget cuts. Let Obama and the Democrats vote against supporting our military during a time of war. Another winning issue for 2014. I sure hope someone in the GOP Leadership reads Lucianne. This is a no brainer...the only way we the people will get the domestic spending cuts.

They are NOT "the Bush tax cuts" any longer!!

The DemonRATS voted to extend those tax rates and 0bama signed the extension.

They are "the current tax rates" OR they are "0bama´s tax rates"

I wish we had--even just one--elected Republicans with a backbone!

I wish our elected Republicans would act more like DemonRATS!

They lie, stretch the truth, and act as if everything is how they want it.
They stick together, right or wrong, and stand up with one another.
They ignore any facts that don´t advance their position.
They get their talking points each day, and parrot them to perfection.

Expecting "talking points", no matter how reasonable, from Republicans is like herding cats...each wants to strike out by their self, and will argue endlessly about who is "right." There is no "right" there is only what is Constitutional and what can be accomplished.

And there isn´t a one of them ready to put it on the line and say, "That is unconstitutional, and if you insist on following that line of action we will impeach you!

How many times have they failed the above?

Dozens of unaccountable Czars
Fast and Furious guns killed Border Patrol agent
Campaigning on Air Force One
Many lavish vacations with separate airplanes
Benghazi and the deaths of four Americans with no backup, despite the requests for help

I could go own and own

WASHINGTON — The White House threatened to veto a House bill that would block the Internal Revenue Service from issuing a rule that would narrow the definition of who qualifies for a 501(c)(4) exemption as a social welfare organization. Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp’s (R-Mich.) Stop Targeting of Political Beliefs by the IRS Act, which was in the Rules Committee on Tuesday evening, would freeze the finalization of the rule for one year and restore the 501(c)(4) standards and definitions that were in place before conservative groups started to come under extra scrutiny in 2010. Last month we wrote about the threatening phone call from then-Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner to the head of the parent company of Standard & Poor´s after S&P downgraded the U.S. credit rating in 2011. Now we learn that Mr. Geithner placed the call to McGraw Hill Chairman and CEO Harold McGraw III just five minutes after leaving an Oval Office meeting with President Barack Obama. This detail, drawing on information contained in Mr. Geithner´s public schedule, was included late yesterday in a filing by S&P in federal court in the Central District of California. According to the City Of La Marque, the U.S. Army will be conducting flight testing this week, from Tuesday until Friday, though they didn´t specify what day they would be active. Chief Randall Aragon with the La Marque Police Department said the choppers will be flying low, but not making any landings. Fifty years ago today, Muhammad Ali “shocked the world” and beat one of the most fearsome fighters ever to put on a pair of boxing gloves, heavyweight champion Sonny Liston. But what if that storied fight was not what it seemed? It happened Feb. 25, 1964, at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The film clip and sound bite have now become part of the American story — Liston quitting his stool before the eighth round, a young Cassius Clay, as Ali was known then, bouncing around the ring, waving his hands, yelling to the reporters at ringside who thought he would be killed by the more veteran boxer.

Susan Rice ought to stay off “Meet the Press.” The last time she was on, she misrepresented what led to the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya. On Sunday she was back, this time misrepresenting critics of the Obama administration’s Syria policy. Last time her misrepresentation was unintentional. This time it wasn’t. I prefer it, though, when she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. In a frustrating colloquy with host David Gregory, Rice initially said all the right things about Syria. She called the war there “horrific,” which indeed it is. She said it had “spilled over and infused

It has the makings of a royal mess for “King Barack.” Monday morning’s Supreme Court argument about the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases went badly for the Obama administration — so much so that the real question before the justices seemed to be how severe the EPA’s loss would be. The administration’s solicitor general, Donald Verrilli, pleaded with the justices to recognize the “urgent problem” of climate change, because the “threat to future generations gets worse” with each passing year. But as the argument played out, the court’s swing justice, Anthony Kennedy, made clear that he

The long-awaited simplification of the tax code being drafted by House Republicans would slash the top income tax rate to 25 percent from 39.6 percent and impose a surtax on some of the nation’s wealthiest households. Under the proposal, set for release Wednesday, the vast majority of taxpayers would see little change in the ultimate size of their tax bills, according to a nonpartisan congressional analysis of the legislation. But the tax system would be dramatically simpler, with seven existing brackets collapsed into just two, set at 10 percent and 25 percent. In addition, the plan would impose a 10 percent surtax on certain types of earned

KIEV, Ukraine — Russian leaders expressed their distrust and dislike of Ukraine’s new government on Monday, saying it came to power through “armed mutiny,” just hours after the authorities here announced a nationwide manhunt for ousted president Viktor Yanukovych on charges of “mass murder of peaceful civilians.” Russia questioned the legitimacy of Ukraine’s interim leadership, charging that it used a peace deal brokered by Europe to make a power grab and to suppress dissent in Russian-speaking regions through “terrorist methods.” The tone was much harsher than any previous Russian response to the events of the past few days.

The Obama administration warned Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday not to react too aggressively to the fast-moving developments in Ukraine, where pro-Western demonstrators forced the nation’s Moscow-backed president from power over the weekend. National Security Adviser Susan E. Editorial cartoons often aren´t pretty, to paraphrase Steve Martin´s observation about the perils of comedy. But a cartoon in the Opinion section of today´s New York Times is downright ugly. The cartoon, alluding to this year´s brutal winter, suggests U.S. Department of Commerce "Strategies for Dealing With the 2014 Icicle Surplus." Among them are using icicles as "locally sourced hydration devices," "temporary doorsteps," and "brainteasers for dogs." Compared with how the Obama administration has swept under the rug the Benghazi attacks of September 11, 2012, Nixon’s attempt to cover up the Watergate burglary was rank amateurism. To be fair, Nixon’s team of Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell, and Dean were not in the same league as Obama’s, which includes not only his cabinet but most of the national media and much of Congress. If a president were intent on covering something up—something big, such as an illegal gun walking operation to Mexico or a dereliction
