The parents of a college freshman who was found dead on campus say they found out about her death on Facebook. Jasmine Benjamin, a 17-year-old nursing student at Valdosta State University from Lawrenceville, Ga., was found dead in a study area in her dorm on Nov. 18. According to CBS Atlanta, police are treating the death as a homicide, pending the results of an autopsy. Jasmine's parents say the school did not inform them of her death, learning about it instead through a friend's Facebook post. "For someone to be so insensitive not to reach out to the family,

How many trial lawyers do you suppose have called them already??

Please, your check cleared. The Government school does not care about you or your daughter, only increasing the pay of the professors and teaching the destruction of America.

My condolences to the family.

12 hours on a studyroom couch? It appears the study room is not used that much.

Condolences to these poor parents. It´s the worst thing that can happen to a family.

I always had a bit of worry on my mind while the kids were in college. I trusted my kids to use their heads but there are so many other people around to intervene.

I learned my SIL was in the emergency room on Facebook when my daughter posted it.

Luckily he was okay, but I read her the riot act about using FB instead of a telephone. Do what you want to do AFTER the people who care about you are notified.

My heart really hurts for these parents, but they have apparently had no experience observing college kids. They sleep anywhere and everywhere, but for all anyone who saw her there may have thought, she could have gotten up at some point, then come and laid back down. The reality is that social media is instant communication, whereas the school and sheriff´s department had to take certain steps before notifying them. She was found at noon, and they were notified that afternoon. That is simply not unreasonable. Still, I am so sorry for them.

How awful for them. But, yes, I can´t blame the college for not being able to reach them as quickly as FB or Twitter.

Prayers for them and I hope they find the answers as to why/how their daughter died.

Re #3, two parts to that 12 hour information.

She was found on the study room couch where she appeared to be sleeping.

She was believed to have been dead for 12 hours.

But...her death is believed to be a homicide because it appeared that she had been moved to the couch from somewhere else at some time after her death.

So...

The notification is something else. But there is no support for her being on that couch for 12 hours.

The parents have hired a lawyer and private detectives.

The way this story is written, the family seems more concerned about how they found out than about the death itself.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

The case of a same-sex Connecticut couple accused of repeatedly raping and abusing two of their nine adopted boys is headed for trial. Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors. The men had already pleaded no contest in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor — a reduction from even more serious charges related to sexual assault....
