Now that Obama´s reelected, he´s
returning to the campaign

Here´s a little something that could surprise some people: Remember that little election we had 22 days ago that gave President Obama a second term and the flexibility to do numerous things he´d promised the Russians? You might have thought the election victory was the end of Obama´s campaigning. Silly you. Now that he never gets to run again for anything, Obama is hitting the campaign trail once more this week to talk to supportive audiences about what he´s been saying for many months about this looming fiscal cliff business. It comes due in early January,

Cairo - Egypt’s Justice Minister Ahmed Mekky has resigned in protest at “an assault” on the judiciary by President Mohamed Morsi’s Islamist backers, a spokesman said on Sunday, underlining mounting tensions between the judiciary and the executive. Mekky submitted his resignation to Morsi on Saturday, said the spokesman, Ahmed Salam. It followed a protest on Friday by Morsi’s Islamist backers in the Muslim Brotherhood demanding the “purification” of the judiciary. Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon on Monday implicitly confirmed that Israel was behind a January strike on a weapons convoy in Syria, saying the Jewish state had acted to stop advanced weaponry reaching Hizbullah terrorists. Speaking at a news conference with US Defiance Secretary Chuck Hagel, Yaalon said Israel would not allow "sophisticated weapons" to fall into the hands of "Hizbullah or other rogue elements." "When they crossed this red line, we acted," he said, in what was widely understood to refer to the air strike which a US official told AFP had targeted surface-to-air missiles that Israel

Makhachkala - Russian security services monitored Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev during a five-month visit he made to the North Caucasus region of Dagestan in 2011-2012, but found no reason to arrest him, a security source said today. (Snip) "Security services came across Tamerlan four times" in course of his visit, he said. Canadian police say they have arrested two people and charged them with trying to carry out an Al Qaeda-backed terrorist attack against a passenger train. Authorities say the men, named as Chiheb Esseghaier and Raed Jaser, were planning to derail a passenger train travelling between New York and Toronto. "While the RCMP [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] believed that these individuals had the capacity and intent to carry out these criminal acts, there was no imminent threat to the general public, rail employees, train passengers or infrastructure," the Mounties said in a statement.

London - The Boston bombing was major blowback. That much is certain. The question is, what level of blowback? It could have been a covert op gone real bad. It could have been blowback from former ´´freedom fighters´´ - in this case ethnic Chechens - reconverted into terra-rists. It could have been straight blowback for United States foreign policy targeting Muslims, whether dispatching them to Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib or Bagram, extraordinarily renditioning them, or target assassinating them. The FBI, predictably, is not admitting any of these three options. It sticks to a convoluted

In the midst of the Second World War, Joseph Stalin, seized by one of his historic fits of paranoia and cruelty, declared the Chechen people disloyal to the U.S.S.R. and banished them from their homeland in the northern Caucasus to Central Asia and the Siberian wastes. Tens of thousands of Chechens, along with members of other small ethnic groups from the Caucasus and the Crimean Peninsula, died in the mass deportation or soon after—some from cold, some from starvation. The Tsarnaev family eventually settled in a town called Tokmok, in Kyrgyzstan, not far from the capital, Bishkek.

Luxembourg - The European Union on Monday lifted its oil embargo on Syria to provide more economic support to the forces fighting to oust President Bashar Assad´s regime. The decision will allow for crude exports from rebel-held territory, the import of oil and gas production technology, and investments in the Syrian oil industry, the EU said in a statement. (Snip) The move marks the first relaxing of EU sanctions on Syria in two years as governments try to help ease shortages of vital supplies in areas held by the opposition in the civil war-struck Arab state.

Austin, TX - The flagship campus of the University of Texas here has been in the national news often over the last year, mainly because of a legal challenge to its race-conscious, diversity-minded admissions policy. The Supreme Court heard arguments in the case in October; its decision, not yet rendered, could affect affirmative action nationwide. But there’s another, equally weighty contest being waged at the school, and it concerns nothing less than the future of higher education itself. Do we want our marquee state universities to behave more like job-training centers,

In addition to being beloved by Democrats, Clinton has long-standing ties with African American voters and is appealing to some moderate Republicans – two critical voting blocs in the May 21 runoff against

In 1962, at the Carlyle Hotel in New York, a man “peeled off his clothing and began prancing around his hotel suite.” His bodyguards were cautiously amused, until the man “left the suite and began roaming through the corridor of the Carlyle.” The man in question was delusional, paranoid and suffering a “psychotic break” from the effects of an overdose of methamphetamine. He was also the president of the United States. The reason for John F. Kennedy’s bizarre behavior was that, according to an explosive new book, the president was — unbeknownst to him, at first — a meth addict.

Rubio explained that under his bill ilegal aliens who "have committed serious crimes" will be deported. However, the proposal will apparently not deem as a serious crime the habit

BOSTON - The surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings suffered an injury to his throat and may not be able to talk, a federal official told CNN on Saturday, possibly hindering attempts by authorities to question him about a motive in the attack. The Council on American Islamic Relations again offered sympathy to victims of the Boston Marathon bombing on Friday, but added a plea for Americans not to generalize and conclude that Muslim teachings influenced the suspect in any way. "Our focus is primarily on the victims," said Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Chicago chapter at a press conference Friday afternoon. "We don´t want to be drawn into defending ourselves." Citing acts of violence in Boston and New York, Rehab blamed Islamophobic forces for inciting hate crimes.

THE graying man flashing fury in the Rose Garden on behalf of the Newtown families, the grieving man wiping away tears after speaking at the Boston memorial service, is not the same man who glided into office four years ago. President Obama has watched the blood-dimmed tide drowning the ceremony of innocence, as Yeats wrote, and he has learned how to emotionally connect with Americans in searing moments, as he did from the White House late Friday night after the second bombing suspect was apprehended in Boston.

In debate classes or law school, it is often referred to as the ‘arguing against the non-existing opponent’ tactic. The way it works is you imply your opponent is making an outlandish, unsavory claim (though he isn’t), hoping others will run with it or, at worst, that your opponent won’t sufficiently correct it and the claim sticks. To illustrate, imagine Sally is arguing in favor of marijuana’s legalization against Tom. In the middle of the debate, Tom suddenly shrieks: “Well, Sally, you can talk about legalizing marijuana all you want but I just don’t believe

Washington — The governor of Massachusetts says he has no idea what motivated the terrorists who exploded two bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Speaking Sunday on CBS’ ”Face the Nation,” Deval (deh-VAL’) Patrick said it’s hard to imagine why someone would deliberately harm, quote “innocent men, women and children in the way that these two fellows did.” Patrick also said law enforcers believe the immediate threat ended when the police killed one of the alleged terrorists and captured the other. The two men were brothers whose family had come to the U.S.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A Massachusetts police official say the brothers suspected of bombing the Boston Marathon before having shootouts with authorities didn´t have gun permits. Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert Haas tells The Associated Press in an interview Sunday that neither Tamerlan Tsarnaev (tsahr-NEYE´-ehv) nor his brother Dzhokhar had permission to carry firearms. He says it´s unclear whether either ever applied and the applications aren´t considered public records.
