Okay, we´ve had the End of the Republic, the degenerate electorate thesis, and the ritual beating of Mitt Romney. I hope everybody has had their catharsis, because it´s time to get serious. It´s typical in an election lost by the right for every last factor is poked at, examined, and raked over the coals except for the single most important element, always and forever overlooked: conservatism itself. I contend that much of the problem with current right-of-center electoral efforts involves conservatism as currently practiced.
The conservative reaction can only be viewed as an expression of cowardice. So the public views it, and they are quite correct. A politician or party that will not stand up for its own reputation is unlikely to stand up for anything at all...
It is cowardice. Republicans are too nice; they take their honor and their religious vows seriously, many being Christians. The Left doesn´t have that problem.
More important and least discussed, is Dunn´s parenthetical comment:
(Note that the typical left-wing image -- various shades of congenital rebel -- carries little of the ignominy attached to those pinned on the right, and in fact, has considerable innate appeal to the inexperienced, uneducated, and plain foolish.)
Aside from the obvious media bias toward the Left which it does no good to whine about, you have a populace that is younger, more violent, less moral and more ignorant of history, about which they have no interest and thereby, no undertanding of what happens to people under liberalism and socialism. It´s all just cool to them.
Young people want to be members of groups, to be accepted, but they will choose the group if it wins, not if it loses. Real Conservatism is dying out for two reasons; we´re older is the main reason. But almost equally important is that we don´t offer young people anything they want except restrictions -- or so they view it.
They reason the Left is so successful is that the Right, when it does fight back, fights with a dwindling army and a vague message. The message is vague because it isn´t heard; it´s drowned out by movies, public schools and the media. How should conservatives fight that?? We´re outgunned.
So where do we get the new soldiers? Dunn is right when he says the Tea Party is the home of the fighters. But they had better learn to fight dirtier than we have so far or we will never win another election -- the demographics have changed too much.
The repiblican´s biggest problem is they haven´t came up with any new logical solutins tonew and old problems. We´re all bemoaning Obamacare but we handed the issue to the left by doing nothing under 6 years of Bush having control over congress. To this day, no one still know what the GOP´s plan is for healthcare except buying insurance across state lines which is very impracticable considering the different health conditions of each state. Mississippi has lower rates due to tort reform, should everybody be allowed to buy insurance from them? No,other states need to push for medical liability reforms.Doctors are flooding into Texas because there´s more protection from Trial lawyers.
The simplest solution would have been sliding scale vouchers for people to buy private insurance which would have put more people in the pool, lowering costs.
The government sees insurance companie smaking a profit and they sure aren´t going to allow tax dollars to boost someone profits unless they build CFL lightbulbs.
I usually like the articles written by this author. In this article the main message is lost with so much other "stuff." I couldn´t make it to the main point through all the recitation of GOP horror stories very familiar to most readers at AT. Please just get to your point.
Excellent read! I kept saying, yes, yes,and yes. We knew what happened to Palin and all the rest. The left has this tactic down pat and that is why they are winning. Even now, Mitt Romney is being ignored, it seems not one supporter is telling Romney what a good job he did. Think of it, he only lost by 2%. This is a very important article!! Repubs and conservatives, take note. It could save us.
If the audience the republican party is talking to, i.e., money for no work, promises of free healthcare, free food, free housing, free education (indoctrination), free phones and cars, then of course the message and the party must change. And, from what I see around me here in ma, romney/rush was right, you can´t beat santa claus. The very core of this nation has been transformed and there is no reasoning with it. Like a two year old throwing a tantrum, it wants what it wants. As far as the moral compass of the republican party that has been drifting far left for a long time.
It is called propaganda. It is not a dark art. Any artist, any playwright, any musician must create and sustain an image to succeed. The content of conservatism is Emersonian: we rely on ourselves, we personally achieve, and we make the world a better place thereby. If only the Repubs would do a "Life of Julia" on their side. Julia and how she died in total despair, having accomplished nothing in her life other than to increase taxes on others. Oppose that to a character who succeeded despite long odds, without help.
Folks this article missed a major point, everything in this administration including the media is plain corrupt. Uninformed Folks to have to pay attention to this: things MUST be bad. We are informed but the masses have forgotten the election and have returned to their reality show focused lives. The proverbial trains would have to stop coming on time for anyone to notice what the corrupt are doing.
Yes our side has an image problem thanks to buffoons like Akin, etc. except for the new media, Fox, we have no access or to channels to get our true message. This has all been by the lefts design. The left is the party of grievance which is destructive to all including our dependent class. I just have no idea how we can combat this corruption when no one seems to care.
This is an incisive, timely article; it articulates what we´ve all known for sometime but could not formulate in words.
As a one-time leftist, I´m familiar with frozen images: icons, caricatures, "visual memes." More elaborate than mere symbols, these function similarly in that they encapsulate an amalgam of prejudices, contempt and distortion, are widely and cheaply dispensed and immediately consumed so that filters of rational deliberation are evaded.
This is what Alinsky was referring to when he directed his acolytes to "pick the target, freeze it and polarize it, " but it also finds an advocate in the once widely read screeds of French leftist Roland Barthes; his essay "On Myth" is considered a cornerstone of this strategy.
It´s about 22 years ago that I was reading this stuff, and it had been buzzing around academe for decades prior. It emerged from the frustration of leftist intellectuals at the failure of socialism to overthrow capitalism in post-war Europe. That should give some idea as to how long the left has been conscientiously refining this strategy.
The unspoken issue: abortion. Women voters are conditioned to see any anti-abortion sentiment as an invasion of their autonomy. The left was able to paint Romney as a virulent anti-abortionist.
Most important: Romney ran a negative campaign. Declaring himself to be against Obama-care without offering an appealing alternative turned off many nervous voters. Pointing out the economic disaster was not enough; he was obliged to offer a comprehensive outline of how his ideas would work better. Foreign Policy: again critical, but without any picture of how his would work better. In short, few promises, many complaints and nothing to offer beyond his unquestionable competence. Mere competence was not enough.
Dunn is absolutely right. Conservatives have been playing the naive idiot for too long. It´s like we´re wearing a "kick me" sign and everyone is laughing at us and we just don´t understand what is going on while we are at the same time trying to get out message out.
Even the Bible tells Christians in Matthew 10:16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves." So we are COMMANDED by Christ to be shrewd as a SNAKE. Yes, we can use trickery and sleight of hand and duck and fake to send our adversaries down one path only for them to find out they were hoodwinked.
We´ve been nothing but emulating the sheep baa´ing our way around as the wolves have devoured our message.
It is not acceptable to read the opener and the comments on this article. Put your ADD aside and read for longer than 3 minutes for a change!
We have to stop wringing our hands while sipping tea, and start fighting for this country in the jungle warfare that is required. And them scream in the face of the idiot that says you are racist for using the term jungle!
We have been lining up with our muskets and walking in rows right into their drone attack. If we don´t get some "strategery" going, we might as well throw all our cash in the street and feel good that at least those willing to work for it took home the money.
Finally! Commentary that gets to the heart of the matter. Commentary that says we´ve got to don the brass knuckles and get in there and fight. Enough nodding in meek agreement when we are lectured (by liberals and their GOP collaborators) "never wrestle with a pig, because you will only get muddy, and besides the pig enjoys it."
Yeah, the pig will enjoy it until we walk off with a couple of hams and an armful of pork chops. If anyone starts prating "civility" to us, remind them that civility is a bourgeois construct, made irrelevant in the Sixties.
He mentions Sandra Fluke, and the public relations disaster caused by calling her a slut. We should have all come forth and said that no, actually Fluke is, from her very own rhetoric, just a common golddigger and a pickpocket.
As for that oh-so-refined intellectua, Peggy Noonan (a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson State University), such a pleasure to hear her quoting W.H. Auden in her best Brooklyn British accent, knifing real conservatives in the back while she coninuously flips her hair with delicate fingers.
Dunno, but this reads to me like the Right needs to start whining and lying, which I think is pointless. The only fighting needs doing by GOP politicians is to be a pugilist and bat back false premise questions (Ala Newt) and tell the darn truth. That´s it. Let the rest fall where it does. If it crashes we rebuild it (you think the left would be able to?). If people wake up to the truth, great. No-one can manipulate people to the truth by seeming to be cool, it is an inner journey (usually ending when truth hits the sojourner square in the face). Other than that there is only prayer and living by example.
Idea: a Candid Camera-type show on FOX broadcast channels starring Jesse Watters interviewing stupid libs. He could have "tell me about your tattoo" and "explain your bumpersticker" and "tell us why you have so many cats" segments.
He does it better than anybody else. It would be nice not to have to fast forward through O´Reilly to see him.
So, in summation, if you can´t beat em, join em! Is that really where conservatives wish to see and be seen? In my opinion, that is another phrase for defeat.
Quite a long winded article and many circular arguments seeming to say that.
The problem, as pointed out time and time again is free stuff vs. freedom. Trying to sell tangibles vs intangibles is where the problem lies.
As conservatives, we grasp the concept of the meaning behind freedom. Sadly, the young and brainwashed minds do not, and buy into the hype of the Constitution being both outdated and/or a living document. This problem is our fault, allowing schools to babysit our children while we were too busy earning a living. Conservatives must own some responsibility for some failure in how our children were raised, and this is where it got us.
Until then, until we accept some responsibility and grasp the root of the problem, we will continue fighting an uphill and yes, a losing battle.
It´s hard for me to take any article seriously that doesn´t acknowledge obvious, proven voter fraud. They (Obama) literally stole the election in key swing states. And Romney, Ryan, the GOP, conservatives, tea partiers, libertarians, and all talking heads just rolled ove and ignored it. I will never understand that. Ever. We need to stop being nice. Enough!! We need to stop apologizing for what we believe; the founders sure didn´t. Time to lay it out, put it out there via social media, cable, and new tech, and make it a cool alternative to liberal crap. Kids are out of work and frustrated. Lets give them a cool alternative (how about a: I am a founder! Advertising Campaign?have people of all ages talk about what the did and why, with the tag line "I am a founder!" Or "for the founders!" ) to the current status quo.
I became a conservative 30+ years ago when I was a student at Ohio State after being required to read Milton Friedman in a poly sci class. I clearly recall the professor explaining the difference between capitalism vs. socialism this way: "freedom to" vs. "freedom from." A lightbulb went on for me. Sadly, now we´re now living in a "freedom from" society. We´ve given up the freedom to achieve for the perceived comfort of freedom from want, need, etc. Not sure if it´s possible to change course.
Conservatives are free thinkers and honest...Liberals on the other hand, are neither, they are collectivists and think inside of a Socialist box...they are also very nasty people and lie to get their way.
We, Conservatives, need to educate America of the differences. The opportunity for that is currently not optimum as the ´takers´ have ´taken over´.
We must wait until the Takers and their leaders trash America for everyone to finally realize the Socialist mentality/methods are bad. People, in general, do not react to solve a problem until it bites their behind very hard. That day is rapidly approaching...wait for it...wait for it, then take action!
It´s about time. No more ´compassionate conservatism´, no more ´reaching across the aisle´. We are at political war, and the Conservatives have brought silly string to a gun fight. Obama was generous enough to presume the right would bring knives, and encouraged the left to bring guns. The right continually backs down and parts so the left can forward its destructive agenda.
Remember the ranting and railing Pelosi did after Bush won, and had the majority? The left refused to acknowledge the win, and used every trick possible to defeat any successes under Bush. W refused to fight back, and gave the Congress to the dems. They continually said he had no mandate, even though he won.
The TEA Party is not the problem, Karl Rove and all the mushy blue dogs that have taken over the GOP leadership are the problem.
Reagan was right when he said it was with bold colors that the Conservative agenda was advanced, not pale pastels (i.e. democrat lite).
#18- It´s harsh and shocking, but wouldn´t it be interesting to see the left defend against a commercial showing an abortion, with the woman voicing over, "I have never felt more honored and respected as a woman, than at this moment."
If you have seen the pro-life videos on-line, then you know how brutal the abortion procedure is. Maybe another with the tray with the fetus in parts and a tag line that says, ´It´s not a person, it´s a choice´.
Yes, I understand how offensive this might be, but shock and awe is all most of the 47% will respond to, or even notice anymore.
Simply it is this: The majority and all the leadership in the republican party are liberal -- which is why "they won´t take their own side in an argument." Knowing this democrats have moved in to kill as one iron fist of godless borderless marxism. Republicans would rather kill conservatives who would name the enemy and the tactic, and bring God into the fight to win back this once righteous country, rather than get out of the way. WWIII could start tomorrow. Finding a charismatic conservative leader acceptable to the republican establishment, able to call a spade a spade and educated a sceptical voter base much longer. This would be the part of Don McClean´s song where "the marching band refused to yield."
Who is J.R. Dunn and what qualifies him/her to speak so authoritatively? A year ago, this same person predicted Obama´s fall in the last election and the success of the Catholic Church in resisting Obamacare. After the macaca incident, does J.R. Dunn seriously think that if George Allen photoshopped a picture of an actual monkey with a mohawk, his being called a racist would have been neutralized? One of the problems conservatives have is that we don´t control the media and the media actively works against us using tactics that range from snarkiness to outright calumny. Robert Bork should have punched Ted Kennedy in the face. The other problem we have is that we are vying for the favor of the willfully ignorant, the stupid and the criminal. Trying to explain the fine art of proper governance to such people is folly.
The problem is not all Conservative, it is also the propaganda spewed by the liberal media, that has turned into a propaganda machine for Democrats. I watch a documentary the other day and an ex-Nazi soldier who was interviewed; whose job it was to kill Jews and bury then in a long ditch. He was asked if he had any remorse, which he replied, none. When asked why, he said the Jews were the reason his family had problems (after WW1). The Jews never did anything to him or his family but he believed they did because the Nazi propaganda machine had convinced him it was so. It allowed him to kill innocent people with no guilt whatsoever. It allowed Germans to turn the other way. Today, I am considered a woman hating, racist, homophobe because I hold traditional Christian values on life, races and sex. The masses are slowly being convince that I (and conservatism) am the problem and one day, will turn their heads when I am denied my rights, lose my job, or denied health care. The media is turning into the Democrat propaganda machine and until people rise up against it, it will eventually consume us all.
Long past time that jurnos (and posters) ceased conflating Republicans with Conservatives. Obviously for some, anyone who wears a jacket, tie and laces their shoes is defined as a Conservative. While the rank and file is center/right, the DC establishment including Parker, Rove, Noonan, Frum, Brooks, Coulter, Sullivan as well as the likes of Boehner and McConnell are just a gaggle of charlatans, hustlers and opportunists, laughing all the way to the bank. A Conservative Party would never nominate the likes of the Bushes, Dole, McCain, Romney etc.
Read the whole thing, guess what he missed? The Why. Conservatives are seen as sellouts. Why? I personally think it is because of the Moderates within our ranks who sell out their principles. As a result The Democrat party is seen as effective, and the GOP is seen as not effective. To quote my Left Wing Friends, "The Democrats say they are going to do something, they do it, the GOP never does what it says it will do." Now where on earth would they get that idea? Moderates. Purge Em. Let em be Democrats.
Now that I have your attention, I’m highly recommending you read this MUST READ column in its entirety and save it in a handy location for future reference. I see it as a euphemistic call to arms; one might even say a manifesto. It says No More Mr./Ms. Nice Guy/Gal!
Conservatism should not be a tough sell. It works! Liberalism should be. It doesn’t!
For much too long, liberals have made a crusade out of defining conservatives with a totally false image. It’s their modus operandi. They lie, therefore they are. In this age of fast and loose communication, never has “perception is reality” been more factual.
Observably ashamed enough of his background, and abetted by the most corrupt, complicit media in our history hiding it, we’re now faced with another four years of our hoodwinked nation held hostage. THAT’S context!
The problem is simple: A majority of Americans have become conditioned to trust the mainstream media for their news. The MSM lean heavily toward the Left. So images of candidates are carefully nurtured to favor the Liberal politicians over the Conservative ones.
Watching the last 2 presidential campaigns was a real eye-opener, as the MSM monolithically and systematically bumped the most Conservative candidates, one by one, out of the race. By skewing their reporting to project a negative image of the candidate, or (as was the case in Fred Thompson´s 2008 campaign) simply not covering them at all to project the image of a lethargic candidate who doesn´t really want to win, they squeezed his donations stream to a halt, ending the viability of his campaign.
The solution is much less obvious. I´m not sure I see any realistic way to cure the disease without killing the patient (i.e. how to improve credibility in the press without government regulations that would discredit them entirely)
When all the money runs out for the freebies, you will see a return to Conservatism by huge groups of people. The tide will begin to turn, even for the immigrants to the country.
Being a Conservative is very difficult. You must get out of bed in the morning and work. You must stand by your principles. You must take care of your family. You must help those who CAN´T help themselves. Etc.
Every requirement to be a Conservative starts with YOU. That is where the disconnect is happening. Until the dependent masses change their view of WHO is supposed to take care of these things, nothing will change.
It is a so so article - I am not a Conservative, I am a Republican and will always be one and no third parties at all will attract me. Mitt was a good candidate and got a huge crowd at the Broncos stadium. If you do not think this election was a fraud and stolen, then you don´t know the dims. So many negative comments on this thread that I do not wonder this is a separated party. I like Rove, Coulter, etc., they are very smart and know what they are talking about. As long as the tv media is limited to mostly liberals, they have the ear of the public. Get rid of the tea party name and make it sound fierce. FDR had 3 or 4 terms as prez, I look for bammy to want to emulate him.
Why not pin the rich and entitled label on liberals? It wouldn´t be hard to do. Look where Obama, Rahm and all Hollywood send their kids to school. It isn´t to the public schools they want everyone else to attend. And most of those schools are 99% white. Show where they live--in mansions in gated communities. Expose their offshore holdings--I´m sure they have some. Apple does most of its manufacturing in China. Which party do its executives support? I´ll be it´s the Democrats. This strategy actually worked not so long ago with John Kerry. The Republicans should start now on the Clintons. How much have they earned--jointly, they´re still married-- since he left office? Where did Chelsea go to school? How many people own two houses in high-priced areas? What is their net worth? Let´s see their tax records. And where has Hillary been staying and dining (on the taxpayers´ dime) as S of S? I doubt it´s at the Days Inn or McDonald´s.
#12, you are correct. The reference of "repug" does not belong here. I am sorry, it is okay to be disappointed in the party leaders, but the actual Republican Party is NOT the politicians or the RNC. The Party is the people. The party should be taken over by the people.
#42, is correct, the left has been manipulating perception and falsely defining who we are for generations now. We have done nothing to stop it. And don´t expect the professional politicians to do anything. We need to take control of OUR party and clean it up!! Then we need to get the truth out there and have OUR message heard!!
We conservatives TALK BIG, but we do nothing when it comes to taking action. WE are the problem. Nobody else. Until we get off our duffs and do something, nothing will change. Believe it or not, the Dems (the regular people--not just the pols) do a LOT more for their party than we do for ours.
No we don´t need to chew up Romney or the GOP or even the hard headed constitutional loyalists or anti-abortion absolutists. The overcoming of the opposition by obama was narrow-a squeaker and possibly could have been affected by voter fraud.
The programmable machine that replaced the hanging chads have got to go and the military getting their ballots early is a must.
Stuart Stevens has an opinion piece in the WaPo that makes the case that we ought to build on our positives not eat our own GOPlike, regroup and stay on the high road.
In any case as found when Newt and his young freshmen GOP idealists overcame the left in 1994 he was chewed up by the leftist media. IOW, try the dem tactics and you get nowhere. Reagan talked over the top of the media. We 47% need to continue to directly appeal to the voters with positivity. Newt BTW started the class warfare thing that defined Romney so easily. And Palin wanting the primary to go longer while obama and his media was defining Romney just helped set the image making in stone earlier. A scenario that won´t be happening in 2016 unless obama overcomes the opposition Morsi style.
There is literally nothing new about this. These same truths were shouted from the mountaintops during the campaign by a few – who were dismissed as “Romney haters” and closet -0-bama supporters. It is interesting that Dunn commits the very same error he is excoriating in this article when it comes to Romney’s primary challengers.
The problem is that the GOP agrees with and reinforces the media and Democrat caricature of the GOP if they think it will win friends - like the puny nerd with the “kick me” sticker on his back laughs at being the “butt” of the joke as the bullies kick and taunt him. “You’re right media, those conservatives are loony! They suck!”
The problem with the GOP message is that the GOP doesn’t actually believe it. The problem with the GOP image is that the GOP rejects the principles of its own platform when facing criticism. You have to stand on something before you can be persuasive.
Also, never forget that the Democrats’ only aim is to win. They don’t care if the problems are fixed – they want to be in power. Even after the city is reduced to dust, they will still stand on the tallest pile of rubble blaming someone else and making extravagant promises.
Uncomfortable but necessary reminder.... We knew all this four years ago. We knew all this EIGHT years ago. And couldn´t do a thing about it. May I humbly suggest that there is no political cure for the leftward drift in America. Why? Because what America faces is not a political problem. It is a spiritual problem. Like it or not, this is a problem of the heart, not the head. The answer is to personally receive Jesus Christ as one´s Lord and Savior because He completely turns around the life. The love of Jesus Christ in the heart is the only turnaround for Muslimaniacs. Coming to Christ unfailingly puts them in their right minds. Likewise He is the only possible answer to turnaround America´s godless leftists, young or old. America has a heart problem, not a head problem; a spiritual problem not a political problem. The solution is the gospel is Jesus Christ.
FTA: "This is a knock-down, drag-out battle, a battle that the movement has so far declined to accept."
The first order of business is to take and hold the beach, the Republican Party. There is no other way inland. The Tea Party must take over the Republican Party just as the socialists took over the Democrat Party, and forcibly retire every single republican who refuses to toe the conservative line. It should begin with the removal of everyone named "Bush," and everyone who has been associated with anyone named "Bush." Get it straight. NEO-cons aren´t conservatives.
Conservatives in the Republican Party have for decades been playing to not lose. It is sold as "managing" risk, but it is really terrified avoidance of risk at any cost. As anyone who follows sports or business knows, that strategy of timidity loses games and bankrupts companies. It also loses elections.
So now it´s no more Mr. Nice Guy. I´ve had it with the stupid secession talk, the search for the next "me too" black candidate, the swooning over Rubio and his cadre of illegals he promises to bring with him (no thanks), and the fair weather right-to-lifers and bedroom snoops who insist on inflicting on the Republican Party the culture war that they already lost in their churches.
Individual liberty, limited government, the rule of law, economic freedom, low taxes, and minimal regulation. All the rest is dross.
Unfortunately it will need to get much worse before it gets better. Even then it could go either way.
All any of us can do is vote. However, I no longer have any faith in the process. Hacked computers, early voting (which allows dims to bus in disparate groups (homeless, nursing homes, SEIU, etc...) prior to election day), no picture ID´s and not purging voter rolls of the dead (so they can be impersonated) are the reason.
I will be fine as will most of us on this site. I´m not going to let the next four years affect my daily life. I am, however, disappointed.
You know, there´s signal and noise and fire and smoke. The post mortem of this election is all about smoke and noise. The first and foremost goal of conservatism---number one on the list of things to do to regain a foot hold in this nation---is to neutralize the liberal media!! They have spent the last 40 years dumbing down and liberalizing the public through their news censorship and mushroom growing propagandizing (keep ´em in the dark and cover them with manure). It´s no wonder 63 million ignorant mushrooms voted for the most incompetent man to ever run for president in 2008. I´m not convinced that there aren´t a couple of conservatives rich enough buy to out two of the big three broadcasters (ABCCBSNBC) and turn them into legitimate news organizations. The WAPO is slowly dying and maybe someone can convince Carlos Slim to give up bailing out the Times so it will go belly up. Until the American people are told the truth (the WHOLE truth) consistently every night on the 6 o’clock news they are going to continue to be dumb enough to fall for the socialist/labor/democrat lies on the campaign trail. How many times have you asked yourself "how could they be so dumb to vote for him"? Well, if your world view was filtered through ABCCBSNBCCNN you’d understand why.
FTA:*Conservatives should select one or more representative leftist icons and Palinize them. Susan Rice, with her decades-long record of incompetence, mendacity, dishonesty, and sleaze (this woman tried to cover up the Rwanda massacres, long before the Benghazi attack), would make an excellent target.*
In this,at least, the author is correct.
Put on a haz-mat suit before you approach this toxic slag; people seem to die around her.
WASHINGTON- Democratic Representative Mel Watt´s nomination to lead the agency that regulates taxpayer-owned mortgage financiers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac cleared a procedural hurdle in the U.S. Senate, putting it on course for final approval likely later on Tuesday. President Barack Obama nominated Watt in May to head the Federal Housing Finance Agency, but Republicans had blocked a final vote. Last month, however, Senate Democrats changed the rules to allow nominees like Watt to overcome filibusters with a simple majority in the 100-seat chamber. Previously, it took 60 votes.
The generous mystery tipper who has been leaving waiters and waitresses across the country thousands of dollars in "Tips for Jesus" — and stamped with the @tipsforjesus handle — was identified by a New York City waiter as Jack Selby, former PayPal vice president. Aruj Dhawan, a waiter at Bo´s Kitchen, told the New York Post that Selby and two other patrons gave him a $1,000 tip on a $111.05 bill. "As I was about to drop the check off, one of the men said they would ‘make my night.’ They called me over, gave me the check," Dhawan told
General Motors GM -0.22% CEO Dan Akerson and the GM board have selected product chief Mary Barra to succeed him, the company said today, and Akerson is retiring in January. The move will make 33-year GM veteran Barra the first woman to lead a global automaker. Arguably, it will make her the highest-profile female CEO in the world. It also set in motion a cascade of other management changes in the biggest re-set of the automaker’s leadership since the 2009 U.S.-government bailout. But all the moves were internal. Akerson accelerated the timing of his exit by several months because of
Democrats have blamed much of the gridlock on Capitol Hill on a number of GOP extremists who won’t accept legislation that is not perfect in their minds. Asked by Kenneth G. Langone, the co-founder of Home Depot, whether there are any extremists in the Democratic ranks, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said no. “I don’t think there are any extremists in my party,” the Maryland Democrat said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” Mr. Langone expressed disbelief at the comment. “What more can I say,” he said. “The other guys are the bad guys, you are the good guys.” Mr. Hoyer said
“Netflix is casting its vote for Mitt Romney,” quipped The Hollywood Reporter. The video streaming service has acquired a Greg Whiteley documentary titled “Mitt” that will debut January 24. The behind-the-scenes documentary on Romney’s campaigns for president from 2006 to 2012 with a “surprising level of access” to the candidate will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 17. Lisa Nishimura, Netflix vice president of original documentary and comedy, declared "This rare inside look at Mitt Romney and his family as he runs for president showcases a unique kind of storytelling, one which takes the viewer well beyond the
Reporting from South Africa on Tuesday´s NBC Today about the memorial ceremony for Nelson Mandela, Nightly News anchor Brian Williams noted how the "dignitary section has some criminals, some thieves, some kings, some presidents" and that "Several have been life-long sworn enemies." He then proclaimed that President Obama´s "handshake with [Cuban leader] Raul Castro was one of the better moments." [View video after the jump] Williams gushed that oppressive dictators sitting side by side with democratically elected leaders of the free world was somehow part of Mandela´s legacy: "What would Nelson Mandela say to all of them and say to
The Club for Growth said Tuesday it won´t help Rep. Steve Stockman´s (R-Texas) primary challenge against Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas). The conservative group said it has no problem with Cornyn and won´t spend the millions of dollars necessary to help the cash-strapped Stockman in the race. “While Congressman Stockman has a pro-economic growth record, so does Senator Cornyn, as witnessed by his 87 percent lifetime Club for Growth score,” Club for Growth President Chris Chocola said in a statement. On Tuesday morning, New York’s top court ruled that FoxNews.com reporter Jana Winter cannot be forced by a Colorado court to reveal her sources regarding a major story about the Aurora movie theater shooter. Voting 4-3 in favor of Winter, the New York State Court of Appeals reversed a lower court order and effectively prevented Winter from having to be subpoenaed by the Colorado court. “[A]n order from a New York court directing a reporter to appear in another state where, as here, there is a substantial likelihood that she will be compelled to identify sources who have been promised
Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly made her inaugural appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno Monday night and discussed how she went from practicing law to hosting a primetime show on Fox, how much fun she has catching politicians in their dissembling, and why she so dislikes Anthony Weiner (aside from the obvious). “I’m a straight news anchor, I’m not one of the opinion hosts at Fox,” Kelly said. “But I always laugh, because I’ll have a conservative pull me aside and say, ‘I love your conservative principles,’ and I’ll say, ‘You assume too much.’ And then the liberals
LOS ANGELES- CBS says it is adapting U.S. author Alice Hoffman´s 2011 historical novel "The Dovekeepers" as a miniseries to air in 2015. Roma Downey and Mark Burnett are executive producing the project, which is about four extraordinary women whose lives intersect in a fight for survival at the siege of Masada in 70 C.E. "After being forced out of their home in Jerusalem by the Romans, 900 Jews were ensconced in a fortress at Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert," CBS said in a synopsis. "Besieged at Masada, the Jews held out for months against the vast Roman
Here´s the tweet from Carrie Underwood that has everyone talking... [Tweet] She was responding to some harsh criticism of the "The Sound of Music Live!" which aired on NBC last week, starring Underwood as Maria von Trapp. The show, which still garnered huge ratings, ended up being parodied by "Saturday Night Live" and was even criticized by some of the original "Sound of Music" stars. Actress Kym Karath tweeted that some of the show was "painful to watch." "X Factor" host Mario Lopez joined Fox and Friends this morning to discuss Underwood´s performance and the response. Elisabeth Hasselbeck believes that
Yesterday, The New York Times reported that President Obama had hired former-President Clinton Chief of Staff John Podesta as "counselor" for a year. This would actually be the second time Podesta served Obama, since Podesta led Obama´s presidential transition team in 2008. Since then, Podesta has not only returned to the progressive think tank he founded, the Center for American Progress (CAP), but he has also created a brand new think tank, the Washington Center for Equitable Growth, to focus on just income inequality. So just what will Podesta be doing for Obama this time around? The NYT reports: Mr. Podesta
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
The Obama State Department has finally released a second round of photos revealing the harrowing devastation wrought by a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. The new photographs depict rampant damage to the consulate. They show charred walls, smoldering fires, Arabic graffiti defacing exterior walls, and scattered debris throughout. The extent of the damage would lead any reasonably serious person to conclude that this was a cold, calculated attack, carefully coordinated to mark the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the American people, the Obama-Clinton-Rice cabal that led to the Benghazi cover-up was
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a last minute decision not to participate in a memorial service for the late South African President Nelson Mandela, despite having notified the South African government that he would attend the event. The decision was made in light of the high transportation costs resulting from the short notice of the trip and the security required for the prime minister in Johannesburg. The Prime Minister’s Office found that the trip would have cost roughly 7 million shekels ($2.4 million) – 2.8 million shekels for chartering a private El Al plane and a further 3.2 million shekels for

The co-host declared, "Another big fashion win for the First Lady.
