on Tahrir Square

Guardian [UK], by Abdel-Rahman Hussein

Cairo - More than 100,000 people took to the streets of Cairo on Tuesday to protest against a decree by the Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi, that grants him sweeping constitutional powers. (Snip) "Dictator" was the word being used to describe Morsi´s new status after last Thursday´s decree, which grants the immunity for the president from judicial review as well protecting a controversial constitutional assembly dominated by the group he is affiliated with, the Muslim Brotherhood. "Today´s protests are to overthrow oppression and stand up to the new dictatorship of Morsi, his decree and a constitution far

Comments:
One man´s dictator might be another´s terrorist leader. Egypt sure know how to throw a protest. Still no word from 0bama and our $500M "humanitarian aid" that the Muslim Brotherhood [Morsi] needs.

Kermit Gosnell and Reproductive Care

What does the trial of a Philadelphia doctor who is accused of performing illegal late-term abortions by inducing labor and then killing the fetuses have to do with the debate over legal abortion? Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee said today that the Kermit Gosnell trial proves that federal funds should not be used for abortions — an especially odd conclusion to draw given that riders attached to appropriation bills already prohibit the use of federal funds for abortions, except in cases of rape or incest. (Snip) But the effort to use this case to “prove” that abortion is wrong, is wrongheaded.

With Immigration Push,

If you turned on the TV Sunday morning, chances are you saw Marco Rubio. The Florida Republican appeared on seven weekly news programs, including two Spanish-language shows, to promote an immigration reform bill he and a bipartisan group of senators are preparing to unveil this week. The bookings were no accident. The conservative lawmaker’s massive pitch to the public signals he is ready to sink or swim with this legislation, which he and fellow “Gang of Eight” colleagues hope will lead to the first comprehensive immigration law in 27 years.

Caracas, Venezuela - Venezuela’s government-friendly electoral council quickly certified the razor-thin presidential victory of Hugo Chavez’ hand-picked successor Monday, apparently ignoring opposition demands for a recount as anti-government protests broke out in the bitterly polarized nation. (Snip) Maduro was elected Sunday by a margin of 50.8 percent to 49 percent over challenger Henrique Capriles — a difference of just 262,000 votes out of 14.9 million cast, according to an updated official count released Monday. The Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne split rumors that bubbled up over the weekend and on Monday were painting anything but a clear picture of this nearly 31-year-old marriage. Son Jack Osbourne, however, was doing his part to unmuddy the waters. First, the rumors ... Sharon was caught on camera "moving into a new home" recently, according to the Daily Mail, which noted the activity took place just days before "The Talk" host was photographed sans wedding ring at a lunch date with daughter Kelly. The London paper showed photos of the redhead looking "downcast" —

Giant snails on advance in Florida

South Florida is battling a growing infestation of the giant African land snail. The snail is considered one of the most destructive invasive species, feeding voraciously on more than 500 plant species. They can also eat through plaster walls, which provides the calcium content they need for their shells. Experts recently gathered at a science meeting in Gainesville to seek the best way of eradicating the snails. (Snip) In some Caribbean countries, such as Barbados, which are overrun with the creatures, the snails´ shells blow out car tyres and turn into projectiles when they encounter lawnmower blades.

US President Barack Obama will meet South Korean President Park Geun-hye in Washington on 7 May amid high tensions on the Korean peninsula. The meeting will cover economic and security issues, officials say. In recent weeks, the North has threatened to attack South Korea, Japan and US bases in the region. The North has now said it will retaliate against the South after protesters there burned portraits of its leaders. (Snip) In response, North Korea on its official news agency KCNA issued an "ultimatum" against the South if it did not apologise for the protests.

The US administration has declared its determination to provide non-lethal assistance in the form of bullet-proof vests, night vision goggles and other devices to the Syrian opposition. (Snip) In reality, the US administration is taking a back seat on the Syrian crisis—an attitude it also adopted when handling the Libyan crisis. But there is one small difference between the two: in Syria, the US is not seated behind NATO troops, but rather behind the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and the Al-Nusra Front. Washington is allowing all of these groups to lead in the hope that it will reap the last-minute benefit:

In Philadelphia, a doctor is on trial for the gruesome murders of eight people inside his low-rent office. Whitehall sources have revealed that the U.S. delegation at tomorrow’s service in St Paul’s Cathedral will be led by two Reagan era secretaries of state: James Baker and George Shultz. Though President Obama himself had not been expected to attend, there had been speculation that he would be represented either by Vice President Joe Biden or wife Michelle. Since he first became a presidential candidate, President Obama must have spent millions of dollars in legal expenses to combat dozens of so-called "birther" challenges seeking the original documents pertaining to his birth. As president, he famously issued an electronic document on the White House website in 2011; the document purported to be his long-form birth certificate, though it is apparently a forgery. In addition, he has taken great pains to hide the paper trail of passport records, college transcripts, and other data -- all of which a prospective employer might require of a job applicant.

In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence. “I was at Fenway Park w my dad and @mikebarnicle during Waco which was on Patriots Day in 1993. Is media bias to blame for lack of Gosnell coverage? Or something far more banal? The trial of Philadelphia doctor Kermit Gosnell would seem to have all the elements of a spectacular news story: shocking allegations, horrifying visuals, sympathetic victims. Yet until late last week, much of the national media was silent as testimony about Gosnell’s alleged “house of horrors” abortion clinic rolled out. Much of the media attention outside Philadelphia, in fact, centered on how little media attention the story was receiving outside Philadelphia.

Sally Bercow has snubbed an invitation to Margaret Thatcher´s funeral because she doesn´t want to ´be a hypocrite and join in this attempted canonisation of her´. The wife of Commons Speaker John Bercow declined the invitation to Wednesday´s service despite the wives of Ed Miliband, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown all being set to attend. In a statement issued today, she said: ´As Commons Speaker, John will be attending the funeral - and rightly so. But I´m not obliged to participate in my husband´s public life - last time I looked, this was the 21st century!
