LOS ANGELES — A group of US servicewomen is suing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta over the Pentagon´s long-standing policy barring women from thousands of ground combat positions, they announced Tuesday. Four female soldiers, including two who won Purple Hearts for bravery in action in Afghanistan, slammed the policy as an "injustice to the women ... who continue to put their lives on the line for their country." "Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be an Air Force pilot, and I have proven my ability every step of the way," said Major Mary Jennings Hegar

Do we really want to send women into the next Omaha Beach or Iwo Jima?

It used to be that our military protected women and children. What wimp would want his mother or wife fighting for him.

The people who filed this suit want publicity or money - probably so that they can have privacy in their padded rooms.

"(T)wo who won Purple Hearts for bravery in action in Afghanistan". This is why you should never, ever believe anything you read about the military in the press. Purple hearts are not, I repeat not, awarded for bravery. My hat is off to anyone who receives a purple heart, but I repeat, it is not awarded for bravery.

As soon as women have to sign up for Selective Service and also have the same PT requirements as men then I say ok...you could go through the entire stock of women in the US Army and MAYBE 50 of them could make a decent infantryman...it has to do with endurance and upperbody strength and the ability to kill another man at close quarters and possibly with your hands or a knife...both of which isn´t happening for women...I can´t birth a child...women make very for poor infantrymen...life´s tough...it is even tougher when your stupid

#5 is correct, the Purple Heart is not awarded for bravery, but for being wounded by the enemy. Additionally, one does not "win" medals; they are not prizes.

This nation died on 11-6-2012.

With NØbama´s re-election, he can now finish destroying everything that used to be great about this nation.

He started the destruction of our medical care system with NØbamacare.

He destroyed our economy with NØbamanomics.

He started the destruction of our military with allowing openly homosexual service members. He can complete the destruction by allowing women on the front lines.

Yeah, the nation is dead. Now we just sit here and wait for the rotting carcass of the former superpower to collapse under it´s own rot...

We used to call the Purple Heart, the I forgot to duck medal.

"But the overall prohibition against women in ground combat remains, denying women the chance to join infantry and armor units as well as special forces."

I can just see any Air Force Major volunteering for the infantry. They used to leave as soon as they found out we didn´t have cable.

I guess Hegar doesn´t consider being a SAR helicopter pilot to be a combat slot. Out of the 4 plaintiffs; 3 are officers. Not unusual, since officers only rotate into combat units for 1 to 3 years.

NCO´s are there for the duration. I knew Ranger E6´s who couldn´t get out of the Regiment, and elected to leave active duty. Their marriages were shot, their kids didn´t know them, their lower back was weakening, and their knees had no cartilage left. But when it came time to re-enlist, they could only go to the Regiment or RTB. After 10 years in the Regiment, they needed a break.

So come on ladies; welcome to our world.

The French need to do some research. The purple heart signifies injury attributed to combat, nothing else. It has nothing to do with bravery in action, as evidenced by John Kerry, although anyone in combat demonstrates courage just by being there. There are other medals awarded for specific instances of bravery.

MOSCOW — Even as American and Russian diplomats groped toward a settlement that would halt further Russian military intervention in Ukraine, Gazprom, the Russian energy company, stepped up the economic pressure on Tuesday by sharply raising the price it charges for natural gas. Gazprom, a state-controlled gas exporter, raised the price to $385 for 1,000 cubic meters of gas, the standard measure used in gas deals in Europe, from $268, an increase of 44 percent. The price increase follows what analysts say is a long practice at Gazprom of punitive pricing for countries in the former Soviet Union and Eastern
