| Anyone who has followed the decades-long controversies over the role of genes in IQ scores will recognize the names of the two leading advocates of opposite conclusions on that subject-- Professor Arthur R. Jensen of the University of California at Berkeley and Professor James R. Flynn, an American expatriate at the University of Otago in New Zealand. What is so unusual in the academic world of today is that Professor Flynn´s latest book, "Are We Getting Smarter?" is dedicated to Arthur Jensen, whose integrity he praises, even as he opposes his conclusions.

Whole nations raising their IQ scores in a generation or two means the ability to take IQ tests was improved, perhaps through training, enhanced awareness. If it is true that westerners fare better at these tests because they have been designed in a western cultural frame of reference, why do Korean children who have never been to the US consistently outscore our kids?

This is very interesting. Sowell´s approach supports my own feeling that much of this is cultural, not genetic, when we´re speaking of averages, not individuals. Sowell also points out that open discussion of academic research makes progress, as opposed to the blanket bans on certain research avenues.

While I generally dislike adding to the over-large list of existing criminal laws, I hereby demand the institution of the death penalty for academic malpractice.
And,yes, I managed to get thrown out of several universities in the 1970´s for expressing conservative ideas.
Zero tolerance for conservatism was designed to prevent conservative youths from ever gaining the power and privilege of higher education.
I took the hint and spent 40 years as a plumbing contractor.

Although cultural factors might play a role in the formation of IQs I have to side with Jensen - it is primarily genetic.

IQ is probably mostly cultural but genes also are a factor. We gladly accept the fact that people like Einstein, Tesla, Edison, etc. were geniuses. No amount of study, education or good cultural influence could make most of us anywhere near the IQ´s of those men.
A lot of the IQ increase is a result of better nutrition particularly in the US in the early 20th century. He mentions that the southerners from the south testing lower than blacks from the north. It´s probably because many southerners both black and white suffered horrendous poverty in the early 1900´s and the malnutrition that came with it.

We are being played; it´s time we learned the game. Conservatives have their Constitution. Progressives have their Narrative. The current battle for America is between these two concepts, and each side uses different rules to fight it. One set of rules is consistent with an unchanging objective: limited government and individual freedoms. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an imprint of the UN, is holding its World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) from December 3-14, 2012. The stated purpose of the WCIT is to update the UN´s "global treaty" on telecommunications to deal more directly and comprehensively with the internet. The United States will not reverse its descent into the abyss of financial and societal bankruptcy until the current political and governing establishment is replaced. Were the average Republican asked for a succinct statement of his views on taxation, he or she might respond thus: “U.S. tax rates are too high for the world we must compete in. The tax burden — federal, state, local, together — is too heavy. We need to cut tax rates to free up our private and productive sector and pull this economy out of the ditch.” This core conviction holds the party together. Having four children 10 and under offers plenty of intimate, hands-on lessons on human nature. Sometimes, for example, in spite of Michelle´s and my best efforts, good parental instruction is ignored and hard lessons have to be learned. I´m not talking about situations that lead to enforced discipline, but rather those that result in sad and tough natural consequences. A good recent example for us is one that many families have experienced: the misplaced bike.

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.

In the 2014 budget he announced last week, Obama proposed a more accurate way of calculating the inflation rate for annual cost-of-living increases in Social Security. It’s a technical change in pursuit of honesty and good government. And if adopted, it would cause benefits to grow more slowly, though almost imperceptibly so. Republican leaders in Congress ought to be delighted since they had “championed”—Obama’s word—the idea in the first place. Then came the catch.
