| White House press secretary Jay Carney on Monday declined to elaborate on President Barack Obama’s plans to wage a grassroots messaging campaign in conjunction with the negotiations over the so-called fiscal cliff. “It would ruin the fun if I gave you all the details now,” Carney said. Party leaders have a matter of weeks to agree a deal to avoid going over the “fiscal cliff,” the term used to describe more than $600 billion in automatic spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to occur on Jan. 1, 2013.

PITTSBURGH - Four Pittsburgh firefighters are suing seven companies that manufacture fire trucks or sirens, claiming they´ve lost hearing due to the blaring sirens. The firefighters range in age from 38 to 62 and joined the city´s fire bureau between 1975 and 2000. They´re claiming that Mack Trucks Inc., Seagrave Fire Apparatus LLC and five other firms "knew or should have known the products ... were inherently dangerous, defective and hazardous to human hearing."

President Barack Obama spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday evening and thanked the Russian leader for unspecified cooperation in the investigation into the Boston Marathon bombings. As law enforcement officials surrounded the Watertown location where 19 year old suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was suspected to be hiding, the White House released a read out of the Obama-Putin phone call, which referenced the United States and Russia working together on the Boston bombing issue.

Despite reports of several generous Texans opening their doors to help out victims of Wednesday’s deadly explosion at West Fertilizer Company, there have been a few people walking the opposite path. In a series of news conferences early Thursday morning, police stated that there have been reports of looting at the homes which were destroyed by the blast. “There has been a small amount of looting,” stated Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton with the Waco Police Department. “We are securing that neighborhood the best we can.”

Laura Nowacki rushed to help the shooting victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. As a first responder, the pediatrician was stunned at the horror she encountered. Four months later, she hurried out of Boston with her husband and four children, anxious to keep them safe after the deadly explosions near the finish line of the historic marathon she had just completed. "That really scared us," she said Tuesday. "My daughter was really upset, so we needed to be a family first and get back home."

Senate Democrats scrambled Tuesday to shore up support for a heralded bipartisan deal on background checks for gun sales as it became clear they do not have enough votes to pass it. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the effort to pass gun-control legislation has "significant momentum." Tuesday night, he scheduled votes on background checks and eight other amendments for Wednesday afternoon. Each amendment will require 60 votes. It was unclear where supporters would find the 60 votes to stop a filibuster on background checks.

The sequester has been a major topic of discussion ever since Obama started using scare tactics to try and get his agenda passed. And since the sequester went into effect, we haven’t heard the end of it. White house tours were cancelled, even though the money saved from that is pocket change. (Snip) Yesterday DHS ordered a new supply of musical instruments including bagpipes and drums.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has twice turned over the entire list of Missouri concealed weapon permit holders to federal authorities, most recently in January, Sen. Kurt Schaefer said Wednesday. Questioning in the Senate Appropriations Committee revealed that on two occasions, in November 2011 and again in January, the patrol asked for and received the full list from the state Division of Motor Vehicle and Driver Licensing. Schaefer later met in his office with Col. Ron Replogle, superintendent of the patrol.

A Connecticut gun-maker announced on Wednesday it intends to leave the state, just six days after passage of restrictive gun control legislation, while two other manufacturers said they are considering relocation offers from other states. Manufacturers also plan to lobby the state´s congressional delegation next week "to make sure they hear from our side," said Mark Malkowski, president of Stag Arms in New Britain. Bristol-based PTR said in a statement posted on its website that it has not decided where it will move, but has commitments from most employees to relocate.

This just goes to show that even the best music in the world can turn ugly if sung too many times by your drunken boyfriend at his birthday party. A 23-year-old Colorado woman named Samantha Malson was arrested this weekend after she choked out her boyfriend for singing “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore over and over, even when she asked “25 times” for him to stop. Unfortunately, it was her lover’s 26th birthday that evening and the victim was wasted (as birthday boys tend to get), leading to an unfortunate altercation

In 1983 when President Reagan ordered the deployment of missiles in Europe as part of his "peace through strength" strategy to counter the Soviet Union, the very liberal town of Takoma Park, Md., declared itself a "nuclear free zone." City officials passed an ordinance known as The Takoma Park Nuclear Free Zone Act, which said, "...work on nuclear weapons is prohibited within the city limits..." If North Korea follows through on its threat to nuke the United States (or had Russia in the ´80s launched a nuclear attack), Takoma Park would not be "nuclear free" for long

Citing administration emails provided to the House committees, the 46-page report claims that “to protect the State Department, the Administration deliberately removed references to al-Qaeda-linked groups and previous attacks

Marathon bombings mastermind Tamerlan Tsarnaev was living on taxpayer-funded state welfare benefits even as he was delving deep into the world of radical anti-American Islamism, the Herald has learned. State officials confirmed last night that Tsarnaev, slain in a raging gun battle with police last Friday, was receiving benefits along with his wife, Katherine Russell Tsarnaev, and their 3-year-old daughter. The state’s Executive Office of Health and Human Services said those benefits ended in 2012 when the couple stopped meeting income eligibility limits. Russell Tsarnaev’s attorney has claimed Katherine — who had converted to Islam —

Tamerlan Tsarnaev is telling no tales. The older of the two brothers who committed the Boston Marathon bombings was likely the one who planned the attack, but when he died in a shootout with police just days after the blasts, his thoughts and motivations vanished with him. But the brain that was home to his angry mind remains, and in this case that may mean something. Tsarnaev was an amateur boxer who won the New England Golden Gloves competition as recently as 2009 and 2010. That speaks to a young man with a healthy sense

President Obama and the First Lady have come up with a crafty strategy to prevent their daughters from getting tattoos — and it banks on the girls thinking their parents are deeply uncool. “What we’ve said to the girls is, ‘If you guys ever decide you´re going to get a tattoo, then mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo. In the same place,’” Obama said with a smile. “And we´ll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo.” “And our thinking is that might dissuade them from thinking that that somehow that´s

He said people outside Washington, D.C., understand this. “Many of my other colleagues I suspect don’t talk about

Next week, the "Argo" and "Good Will Hunting" actor will join thousands of others when he lives off of $1.50 per day as part of the Live Below the Line campaign, from April 29 to May 3. Billed as a means to challenge the way people think about poverty, the campaign requires participants to feed themselves on no more than $1.50 a day for five days.

In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday the country’s interpretation of the Constitution will “have to change” to allow for greater security to stave off future attacks. “The people who are worried about privacy have a legitimate worry,” Mr. Bloomberg said during a press conference in Midtown. “But we live in a complex word where you’re going to have to have a level of security greater than you did back in the olden days, if you will. And our laws and our interpretation of the Constitution, I think, have to change.”

Think of it as a horizontal townhouse. Most developers hype the sky-high verticals of their new glitzy buildings, but a new condominium called The Whitman — soon to be home to former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton - has a completely different selling point: It features the longest apartments in the city. The four-unit building stretches an entire block between E. 26th and E. 27th Sts. It takes almost 30 second to walk the approximate 250-foot central corridor. "The hallway is a wow factor," said Douglas Elliman broker Dina Lewis, who shares the listing with partner Melanie Lazenby, daughter of

Since the Boston bombing, much of cable news quite naturally has taken to discussing various issues surrounding terrorism and radicalization. Morning Joe on Wednesday was no exception. Joined by The Daily Beast’s Tina Brown, the panel also took a look at media portrayal — stressing that we can’t “demonize” all of Islam when we talk about radicals. “The whole family was becoming radicalized, and perhaps by their inability to fit in this culture,” Brown remarked, speaking about “home-grown” terrorism and the Tsarnaev family. As the discussion turned to what exactly “self-radicalized” means, James Peterson asserted,

The Patrick administration clamped down the lid yesterday on Herald requests for details of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s government benefits, citing the dead terror mastermind’s right to privacy. Across the board, state agencies flatly refused to provide information about the taxpayer-funded lifestyle for the 26-year-old man and his brother and accused accomplice Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. On EBT card status or spending, state welfare spokesman Alec Loftus would only say Tamerlan Tsarnaev, his wife and 3-year-old daughter received benefits that ended in 2012. He declined further comment.
