Hiring a Bush Daughter,
to Attract Younger Readers

New York Times, by Christine Haughney

Original Article

Southern Living, a magazine with features on decorating fireplace mantels and profiles of former President Jimmy Carter describing how he hunts holiday turkeys, has a loyal following among middle-aged Southern women. Now it is bringing in a younger voice to attract a new readership. Jenna Bush Hager, a correspondent for NBC News’s “Today” show and daughter of former President George W. Bush, is joining the magazine as an editor at large. She will contribute to a monthly column called Paper Napkin Interview and write for a blog called The Daily South.

The young Bush ladies have demonstrated a number of times that they are persons of substance and a credit to their parents.

"To attract younger readers"--really, NYT?

Maybe they´re trying to attract GOPers, since they´re the ones who can afford to buy magazines and actually know how to read.

Jenna has a natural charm about her, the sort of girl you would hope your son would bring home to meet you.
Compare her to the snarky, nasty, Chelsea Clinton, who is as wooden as George Washington´s teeth, yet was given the pimp spot on NBC.
Yet the media lauded Chelsea for no particular reasons, from the day Bill Clinton moved to the White House.
And the Bush twins were bashed for a while - remember that?
So, NYT, perhaps Southern Living hired Jenna because Jenna was qualified for such a job, as opposed to Chelsea Clinton who was hired by NBC for no particular reason...

We have let our subscription lapse, now we may renew.

The snarky, oh-so-superior tone from the NY Slimes is responsible.

No, the magazine doesn´t do feature articles on the latest drug craze; it doesn´t write about the most popular sexual perversion, but it is a good, family publication.

The recipes are worth the price of subscription.

Trash the Times. Subscribe to Southern Living!

Good for Jenna Bush Hager! You know her parents are proud of her. She has earned the job of editor at large on her own merits. Something democrats and the other "first daughter, Chelsea", do not seem to understand.

Good for Jenna; I´m sure she´ll do a fine job.

Apart from that, I hope SL doesn´t decide to become hip in a fruitless effort to attract younger reader. That´s been the ruination of many a good magazine. Ruth Reichl pretty much destroyed Gourmet by trying to go the hip route.

Seventy-two House lawmakers Wednesday sent letters to ABC, NBC, and CBS to express “how profoundly appalled” they are that the networks have “largely ignored” the gruesome trial of disgraced abortionist Kermit Gosnell, as well as Planned Parenthood’s apparent support of infanticide in testimony before the Florida legislature late last month. “The broadcasters’ blackout of the Planned Parenthood infanticide lobbying scandal and the Gosnell ‘House of Horrors’ murder trial are the biggest and most politically-motivated media cover-ups in our nation’s history,” Tennessee Republican Rep. The president could not have expended more time, political capital and energy on his anti-gun legislation and yet today the vote on cloture on the Toomey-Manchin background check bill wasn’t even close. In the end, 54 senators voted for cloture, 6 less than needed. The Democratic senators voting no were Mark Begich (Alaska), Max Baucus (Mont.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Mark Pryor (Ark.), and Harry Reid (Nev.) (for procedural purposes so he could potentially bring it up again). It is hard to blame this one solely on the Republicans who contributed four votes in favor of cloture.

Gallup released a poll Monday that asked Americans to list the most important problems currently facing the country. Despite the fact that the media has been on a months-long, 24/7 crusade to convince DC lawmakers to restrict our Second Amendment civil rights, this propaganda push has failed miserably with the overall population: Only 4% of Americans see gun control as a priority. As if to punctuate this point, with the help of David Axelrod and Steve Schmidt, the insufferable "Morning Joe" crew was in full demagogue mode Wednesday morning. Joe Scarborough was actually screaming something about "terrorists getting guns!"

And they didn´t even need black helicopters and Men in Black to pull it off. Derided as conspiracy nuts, opponents of the New York state gun law passed by the assembly in the aftermath of Newtown were ridiculed for being concerned that the law could lead to gun confiscation. But it deserves all the publicity we can give it, as I told Jazz Shaw, author of this piece at Hot Air, on my radio show last night:

Protocol: President Obama declined to send a high-level delegation to Wednesday´s funeral of Britain´s Margaret Thatcher. It´s a measure of how little he values the special relationship — and a sign of his own smallness. Back in more gracious times, vice presidents routinely attended funerals of foreign dignitaries. As such, the presence of Vice President Joe Biden — if not Obama himself — would seem fitting for as significant a U.S. ally as the late Prime Minister Thatcher, if not out of warmth of feeling, then simply to represent the U.S.´ gratitude. Three Americans were killed in Monday´s attack and more than 170 others were injured. "Anytime bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror," Obama said,

As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.
