GOP has leverage on ´fiscal cliff´
Washington Examiner [DC], by Hugh Hewitt

Original Article

Posted By:Dreadnought, 11/25/2012 10:40:11 PM

Round three of the great American tax and spending debate of the early 21st century is opening. There are nine Senate Democrats who are most interested in a comprehensive "deal" between President Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner: They are Mark Begich of Alaska, Max Baucus of Montana, Al Franken of Minnesota, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Tim Johnson of South Dakota, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Mark Udall of Colorado. These are the most vulnerable of the Senate´s majority.

If I were a Democrat, I wouldn´t worry too much about not getting Baucus´ seat back. He;s been in office for over 36 years, and we just elected the slimy Jon Tester for a second term as well as a Democrat governor.

Unless Max retires or dies, he isn´t going anywhere

Mr. Boehner is well aware that the Manhattan-Beltway people are not in his district, nor in any of his fellow House republicans. So he is smart enough not to heed their cry for help from the socialist they help get re-elected. John will use his resources wisely, and not the way that the other side wants.

If ALL the Bush Tax Cuts expire - it won´t hurt the GOP, so Boehner can calmly call their bluff. The House has ALL the leverage, really, because all budget bills must originate from the House of Representatives. If they don´t go along - it´s NOT going to happen!

Can´t agree. The "fiscal cliff" = big defense cuts and big tax increases. Obama gets what he really wants and blames the Reps for being the ones who denied the middle class Bush cuts just to save the rich. I wish Hewitt were right but I don´t think so this time.

He talks about vulnerable Dem senators...but Reps were defending only 10 seats this time and somehow managed to lose 2 of those. We´ll manage to nominate nitwits that think rape victims are somehow the issue to address, rather than taxes and spending.

#4 is correct. There will be big tax increases. An Obama and Democrat party victory, if I am not mistaken. There will be devastating Defense cuts. That also is a victory for the Marxist-in-chief. Real hard to pin a rose on this mess.

What was that Obama-Putin conversation like?

As John noted below, President Obama spent an hour and a half on the telephone with Vladimir Putin discussing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. What was the conversation like? We can probably get a good sense of it by considering the account of President Bush’s conversations with Putin set forth by Peter Baker in his excellent book about the Bush presidency, Days of Fire. It’s well known that Bush and Putin got on well at first. But when the relationship soured, Bush became exasperated by his talks with the Russian bully. Putin seemed to delight in debating Bush. But according

Russian President Vladimir Putin moved to officially deploy Russian troops in Ukraine Saturday, defying warnings not to intervene issued a day earlier by his U.S. and other western counterparts. Though a major escalation in the openness of Russia´s commitment, Saturday´s move comes as Russian troops and their local allies have already largely taken control of Crimea, a restive province of Ukraine that belonged to Russia until 1954 and remains predominantly pro-Russian. Heavily armed troops, many from Russia´s Black Sea Fleet, which is based in the Crimean port of Sevastopol, surrounded key facilities across the region

The goal of the president’s newest racially divisive effort, “My Brother’s Keeper,” is to set black and Latino male youth apart from white male youth. It centers on recruiting businesses and foundations to donate $200 million over five years towards programs that will benefit young males of color. Apparently, much like Barack Obama’s real brothers, needy boys with little or ‘no color,’ as well women and girls of any color, will have to tough it out on their own. In the Bible Cain responded to God’s question concerning the whereabouts of the brother he had just murdered with “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

I had missed the Sochi closing ceremonies last week so I watched them on tape. Well, not quite tape, but that’s what people my age and older call it. We’ll return to that in a moment. In the ceremonies, the Russian Olympic Committee representative called the games the greatest ever and said the world got to see “the New Face of Russia.” This week we learned the new face of Russia looks quite a bit like the old face of Russia – paranoid, belligerent and skillful in exploiting moments of American weakness. Back to the tape. There’s a whole generation now that doesn’t watch things on tape, and never did.

As Democratic officials rely more than ever on the big-money super PACs they once scorned, party strategists and donors are caught in sharp disagreements over how to use the newly influential independent organizations. Tensions are simmering over whether Priorities USA Action and other Democratic groups that can accept unlimited contributions are too focused on the 2016 presidential race and a potential Hillary Rodham Clinton candidacy, even as Democrats face a costly, uphill fight this year to retain a thin Senate majority and gain seats in the House. The importance of focusing on the elections this November was a topic of

SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine — Heightened Russian military activity in Crimea on Friday prompted a stern warning from President Obama and a deepening sense of crisis among the leaders of the new Ukrainian government in Kiev. U.S. officials said Russian troops had entered Crimea, and Obama told reporters Friday evening that he was “deeply concerned by reports of military movements” and that there “will be costs for any military intervention.” Earlier in the day, the new Ukrainian government said that hundreds of soldiers in green camouflage, without insignia but carrying military-style automatic rifles, had taken over two airports in Crimea. Russian troops are on the move in Crimea. Ukraine’s Acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov said that Russia is trying to seize the territory: Authorities closed airspace over Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula and at least five Russian transport planes landed at a military air strip near the regional capital late Friday, as the country’s acting president accused Moscow of trying to seize territory. A duty officer at the Simferopol airport said that all commercial takeoffs and landings had been canceled from the Crimean regional capital’s airport for at least 24 hours. … Ukrainian news media reported disruptions “by unknown persons” of telephone

The federal government’s changes to school lunch menus have been disastrous, causing problems for cafeterias trying to comply with the rules and leaving the menu so expensive or unpalatable that more than 1 million students have stopped buying lunch, according to a government audit released Thursday. One school district told federal investigators that it had to add unhealthy pudding and potato chips to its menu to meet the government’s minimum calorie requirements. Other school districts removed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from their elementary school menus. Five of the eight school districts surveyed by the

The IRS’s new proposal to crack down on nonprofits was in the works a year before the tea party targeting scandal broke, according to a Treasury Department official who told congressional investigators it was spurred by pressure from outside parties. The revelation follows earlier testimony from former IRS Commissioner Steve Miller, who told investigators that they started “brainstorming” ways to crack down on nonprofits while under pressure from a senior Democratic senator who was “complaining bitterly to us” about the way groups were engaging in politics while organized as social welfare nonprofits.

Henry Kissinger once pointed out that since Peter the Great, Russia had been expanding at the rate of one Belgium per year. All undone, of course, by the collapse of the Soviet Union, which Russian President Vladimir Putin called “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the [20th] century.” Putin’s mission is restoration. First, restore traditional Russian despotism by dismantling its nascent democracy. And then, having created iron-fisted “stability,” march. Use the 2008 war with Georgia to detach two of its provinces, returning them to the bosom of Mother Russia (by way of Potemkin independence). Then late last year, pressure Ukraine to

Kerry Kennedy has been found not guilty of drugged driving — and gave herself a hearty round of applause after jurors were dismissed from court by a Westchester County judge. The jury handed down the verdict after just 30 minutes of deliberation Friday morning. The six-member panel had deliberated about 45 minutes Thursday night after being handed the case. Kennedy — who had faced up to a year in jail if convicted — hugged both her lawyers as the verdict was read, and then began clapping after the jurors left the courtroom. President Barack Obama is warning Russia "there will be costs" for any military maneuvers it launches in Ukraine, a move U.S. and Ukrainian officials say they believe to be already underway. Officials say Obama may retaliate by canceling a trip to Russia this summer for an international summit and could also cut off trade discussions with Moscow. But it´s unclear whether those moves will have any impact on Russia´s calculus in Ukraine, which is at the center of what many see as a tug of war between East and West. "Any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing," Obama declared Friday

The statement was made as Russian forces — including attack helicopters — appeared in peripheral parts of the Ukraine that are largely populated by ethnic Russians. There’s no evidence that Obama wants to get involved in what may become a war between the Ukraine and Russia. He did not threaten any significant retaliation if Russian force attack nor did he offer military aid to the Ukraine. He announced that Vice President Joe Biden — but not
