| SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- A utility worker responding to reports of a natural gas leak in one of New England´s largest cities punctured a pipe and an unknown spark ignited a massive explosion that injured 18 people and damaged 42 buildings, the state fire marshal announced Sunday. (Snip) Preliminary reports showed the blast damaged 42 buildings housing 115 residential units. Three buildings were immediately condemned, and 24 others require additional inspections by structural engineers to determine whether they are safe. The news here in MA is that he was conducting a routine test, one they will continue to conduct, and they blew up a building. Worker will continue with his job and manner of conducting testing. Insanity can now be defined by saying the word massachusetts.

That is what we in the utility industry would refer to as a ´whoops-a-daisy!´... /s
All kidding aside, utility work can be very dangerous and there is little margin for error, the consequences of which can be devastating. Thank God no one was injured.
Don´t go blindly blaming the ´union label´ here. The vast majority of union utility workers that I work with are highly skilled craftsmen who take great pride in their work. Most are members merely because the job requires it.
Now about that question of where a spark could ignite in a strip club....

There are a lot more questions than answers in the article. Probing to find buried lines is done by hand. It is hard to push the probes into the soil and it would be very hard if not impossible to puncture a gas line by hand unless it wasn´t already almost completely rusted out.

A fisherman in Belarus was bitten to death by a beaver, and all he was doing was trying to take its picture, Sky News reports. The man spotted the beaver while fishing with friends at Lake Shestakov, but as he approached to take a photograph, the beaver bit him on the thigh. The animal managed to sever an artery, and his friends couldn´t stop the blood flow. Sky News helpfully reminds us that beavers can, of course, bite through trees.
