Jobless aid drying
up for 55,000 Ohioans

Columbus Dispatch [OH], by Catherine Candisky

Original Article

About 55,000 long-term unemployed Ohioans will lose federal jobless benefits during the holidays as the recession-era emergency aid comes to an end. Approved by Congress more than four years ago, the federally funded benefits have provided workers up to 73 additional weeks of aid after they exhaust six months of state payments. Lawmakers extended the program several times before restructuring it this year to reduce the maximum weeks available as the aid is phased out. Advocates for the unemployed are urging Congress to approve another extension, noting that the nation’s jobless rate remains at 7.9 percent.

Hunger is a great motivator. It has now come down to an US or THEM decision.
We can´t afford to pay you to be workless anymore. Sorry.

Not extending it might be the best thing for the unemployment rate. Once the safety net dries up these mooches will have to look seriously for a job and take the first one that is offered.

The article uses a phrase "Jobless Worker". Not sure what that means.
The nice part is that once jobless benefits end you are, by definition, no longer unemployed. You have, instead, left the work force so the unemployment rate ticks back down.
As benefits run out, we may well be down to a 4% unemployment rate by the end of Obama´s second term. See thing are getting better.

Not to worry. The unemployment rate will come down drastically when people having two part time jobs becomes the norm.

The SCOTUS erred hugely in 1937 when it ruled unemployment taxes and benefits to be constitutional. As it did in 2012 with ZeroCare.

Reply 17 - Posted by: michellewsc2, 11/25/2012 1:05:34 PM     (No. 9033188)

At some point all this "gov´t assistance" has got to come to a head. With more and more people losing their jobs, and less taxes going to the gov´t, economic collapse can´t be far away.

Prime example is Hostess: 18,500 less people paying taxes. However, that´s 18,500 new people collecting unemployment for 2 years.

And simply raising taxes on the wealthy isn´t the answer -- only 1% of the population earns a million dollars or greater, which is why Obama wanted tax increases on those earning 250,000.

If the unemeployment payment is to be a new life-long pension then the laws should be changed to say that.

Otherwise when is it to cut off? What rules are best?

You will never convince the people receiving money that they should not get it.
And you will never convince advocates that they shouldn´t decide how much others should be taxed.

Two beliefs continue to shape debate on Obamacare. First, pre-existing medical conditions shouldn’t prevent people from obtaining affordable health insurance. And second, people who don’t want health insurance shouldn’t be forced by the government to purchase it. These may seem to be reasonable positions. But they are incompatible. That’s been shown by historical events, and it’s now being strikingly confirmed by recent experience in the emerging Obamacare insurance exchanges. The crux of the matter is what economists call the adverse-selection problem. Uninsured people with pre-existing conditions often face tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in

Some of the earliest clues scientists had that Earth´s climate has changed over time were mismatches between the fossil record and a current ecosystem. How could this palm tree have grown in Wyoming? Why have fossils of the tropical breadfruit tree been found as far north as Greenland? These cold places must have once been warm and wet. The world is not as it has always been. And somehow, despite the tumult, species adapted, moving thousands of miles to habitats where they could survive. Won´t species today just do the same as temperatures rise in the years ahead?

If the trend continues at its current rapid pace, it will place significant stress on terrestrial ecosystems around the world, and many species will need to make behavioral, evolutionary or geographic adaptations to survive, they said.
