Why Jesse Jackson Jr.’s Leave

Pressured by federal investigators, Jesse Jackson Jr.’s final congressional act exhibited some decency toward his constituents. They’ll finally have actual representation again next spring, after a special election and months of a no-show Jackson. (Snip)President Obama’s home state has not merely lost another congressional seat due to population decline. It also has Jackson’s South Side district that will go unrepresented for another five months and a senator who hasn’t been to work in nearly a year.

Doesn´t it just seem logical that the peoples business should come before the ego of a member of congress. After all the only reason congress exists is to do the peoples business. Those folks are elected to do serious work and if they can´t do it they should be replaced and quickly. It´s a stste issue however and each state needs to decide how much representation they want.

It would be difficult for me to say whether the members of this Congress does more harm by staying at home or going to "work". Once, Congress was a co-equal branch of government. This Congress has no power. They knuckle under to both the Courts and the White House.

The people in his district knew what he was when they re-elected him. They got no more than what they deserve. So why feel sorry for them? They will just elect some other incompetent politician to take his place.

Breathitt County, Ky. — The envelopes began arriving in December across eastern Kentucky, one of the sickest and poorest corners of the country. “Dear member ... We want you to be healthy ...” read the letter to Mary Combs, and with it came a plastic card representing the first insurance she ever had: a Medicaid plan made possible by the nation’s new health-care law, effective Jan. 1. Nine days into the new year, the 41-year-old call-center worker headed to the health clinic on Highway 15. She saw a doctor about her chronic stomach ulcers, had her blood drawn for tests

A new environmental assessment from the State Department that raised no major environmental concerns on long-delayed Keystone XL pipeline isn´t the last step in deciding whether the pipeline can be built, the White House said late Friday. The long-delayed pipeline got a major boost as it cleared a major hurdle toward approval, a serious blow to environmentalists´ hopes that President Obama will block the controversial project running more than 1,000 miles from Canada through the heart of the U.S. The White House released a statement pushing back on the notion that the pipeline is now headed for speedy approval, saying Sec. of

Ice fishers in Minnesota are reeling from a recent FAA decision prohibiting beer delivery by drone. Local brewery Lakemaid was testing a new drone delivery system to airlift frosty cases of beer to fishermen holed up in ice shacks on Mille Lacs Lake. After spotting a Lakemaid YouTube video that went up last week of one of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on a test run, the Federal Aviation Administration contacted Lakemaid and told the company to stop. Unfortunately for Lakemaid fans and anyone else dreading a walk to the corner store, it´s currently against the law to fly drones for commercial

In 1988, I published a satirical piece in the New Republic called "If I Had a Hammer." It revealed that Nixon administration representatives had secretly met with leaders of the antiwar movement in a Carson City, Nev., motel back in 1970. Mr. Nixon´s people agreed to end the war in Vietnam if the antiwar people would make folk singers go away. All of them. The deal was struck; the war ended; folk singers vanished overnight. But they never turned in their guitars. For 15 years, the folk singers honored the agreement. Then, strapped for cash and just plain evil, they started to

Congressional candidates and congressmen need lawyers. In D.C., law firms are often lobbying firms. That can create interesting dynamics. For instance: Rep. Michael Grimm, R-N.Y., recently famous for threatening violence against a reporter, is under scrutiny for campaign finance matters. His recent campaign finance filings show he owes more than $416,000 in legal fees to a law firm (h/t Dave Levinthal). That firm happens to be K Street kingpin Patton Boggs. Grimm sits on the Financial Services Committee. The firm to which he is indebted represents Citigroup, Visa, AIG, Prudential, Goldman Sachs, and many others under his committee´s jurisdiction.

Moody´s rating agency has lowered the outlook for health insurers from stable to negative, blaming ObamaCare. Few Americans will shed tears for insurance companies. But the Moody´s announcement is a warning sign to taxpayers. They´ll be getting clobbered. Section 1342 of the Affordable Care Act forces taxpayers to make insurers whole for most of the losses incurred selling ObamaCare exchange plans through 2016. The bailout is designed to conceal the failure of the president´s signature health law until he is out of office. No one in the Obama administration talked up the advantages of bailing out insurers. World peace? No problem for Tim Tebow. Turns out the Patriots did themselves and Tebow a huge favor by releasing him from his contract before the season. Tebow has cashed in on his #NoContract status with a pair of 30-second commercials for T-Mobile set to air during the Super Bowl. If this one is any indication, the rest of the field will be fighting for second place in the "Best in Show" category. The ad is both creative, funny and incredibly well-produced.
