| The entire Christian calendar is based on a miscalculation, the Pope has declared, as he claims in a new book that Jesus was born several years earlier than commonly believed. The ´mistake´ was made by a sixth century monk known as Dionysius Exiguus or in English Dennis the Small, the 85-year-old pontiff claims in the book ´Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives´, published on Wednesday. (Snip) The assertion that the Christian calendar is based on a false premise is not new – many historians believe that Christ was born sometime between 7BC and 2BC.

Comments: Not exactly new news. But the exact year will probably never be pinned down.

I´ve always thought he was born earlier than the scholars claimed. If you match up the timeline of the Annunciation with the Visitation, just by going from the Bible account alone, there wouldn´t be a span of several years between the birth of John the Baptist and Jesus. They would have been much closer in age.

Many early accounts have Herod dying as early as 4 B.C. Couple that with the fact that by the time the magi got there the Holy Family was apparently living in a house (forget what you thought about the wise men coming to the stable) and most scholars believe Jesus was probably born somewhere between 6 and 4 B.C. and probably sometime in the fall. No big deal, the only thing that matters is that He was born and lived and died and rose and still lives.

#4, it isn´t a matter of faith. The date doesn´t matter at all.
That he was born of a virgin, died and was buried and yet rose again . . . that is a matter of faith.

Hang on. Do any of you realize the head of the Roman Catholic faith, the founder and builder of Western Civilization has fundamentally altered the world´s view of Time? And events relative to Timing?
Besides, the Pope did not even menton the 77th Meridian, upon which the entire Gregorian calendar hangs.

The "God Meridian". Holy criminy, whatever is going on is far far deeper than this bit of schlock reporting in a British rag.
This is huge stuff, folks, like an iceberg.

I do not think that the pope or anyone else living today or many years ago knows exactly when Jesus was born. I agree with previous poster - I do not care - we are commemorating his birth, not the day or hour or month or year.

Nor was he born on the 25th of December. That date was chosen by the 1st Holy Roman emperor to coincide with the existing Pagan holidays of the winter solstice. This was to make the transition to "official" Christianity easier - a transition that had more to do with delegitimizing his opposition by eliminating the pagan priests who supported them. Does not matter. The ways in which God works are numerous and amazing. He knew. He knew from the beginning what would happen. Of all the choices we can make God knows which one we do. So 25th of December it is. All that matters is the sacrifice of Christ. And should we not celebrate that every day?

It appears then that the present year is already 2016 or 2018 since it is based as AD (Anno Domini - the year of our Lord) and thus had to begin at his birth. BC is (Before Christ)so ended at his birth.
That means the Dec 21, 2012 of the Mayan calendar was years ago and the end didn´t happen unless it happened and no one noticed.

We do know the time when Roman taxes were collected, so it does comport with the winter months, however, there is nothing to mark Dec 25th as the date. What´s important to know about the birth of the Savior is:
His birth, life, and death was prophesied many times in the Old Testament. It was said that the seed of the woman (Jesus) would have His head bruised (crucifixion) by the serpent (Satan), but that He would crush its head. It was said He would be born of a virgin girl. It was said there would be a celestial sign to His birth. He was born in a feed lot for animals, not in a building. He was wrapped in burial wrapping, as they had no blankets. This was a foreshadowing of His death. He was placed in a feeding trough (manger) for his crib. Both His parents were of the line of David. In Jewish Law, racial Jews descend through the maternal line, so He is a racial descendant of David. In Jewish Law, a step-son can become a full son in the eyes of the Law through adoption, which Joseph, descendant of David, performed, making Jesus the legitimate first-born and heir of Joseph. Therefore Christ was doubly heir to the royal throne of David, fulfilling yet another Old Testament prophecy. It was also said He would be rejected by His people. It was also said He would be "hung from a tree."
What matters most to man is to accept the saving work of Christ on his behalf on the cross. By accepting His work on your behalf you enter into eternal union with Him and become a permanent entry in the Lamb´s Book of Life in Heaven, to live eternally with Him.
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Acts 16:31

Year doesn´t matter, date doesn´t really matters. Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again and offers eternal life if you believe in Him. That matters.

The date-day, month, year-doesn´t matter. We celebrate His birth. But the most important date we celebrate is Easter. That He was crucified, died, was buried and rose again is what really matters in Salvation history. Celebrate His birth, His death for our sake, and His glorious resurrection. AMDG

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A NATO airstrike in eastern Afghanistan killed 11 civilians, 10 of them children, in addition to the Taliban militants it was trying to hit, Afghan officials said. The strike late Saturday in the Shigal district of restive Kunar province near Pakistan was called by coalition forces after they and their Afghan counterparts came under an attack that killed one American advisor and badly wounded four Afghan troops. The American death was reported on Saturday, but details of the alleged civilian casualties only surfaced Sunday. Wasifullah Wasifi, spokesperson for the governor of Kunar province, said the strike

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.

The deaths took place sometime between Thursday afternoon and evening by someone who had some type of relationship with the victims, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office said. The bodies were discovered Friday outside Holbrook, a town of about 400 people just north of the Idaho-Utah state line. Authorities said a 2-month-old was found under the arm of one of the victims — 27-year-old Yavette Chivon Carter.

The new offering reflects the growing popularity of nuggets and strips that are easier to eat on the go, as well as Americans´ seemingly endless desire for more convenient foods. Climate change is expanding sea ice in Antarctica, a paradoxical finding that appears to be the result of melting glaciers, according to a new study. As freshwater glaciers melt, cold water sinks into the ocean, keeping the sea colder than it would otherwise be. The fresh water is less dense than seawater, so it floats on the top layer of the ocean, which in turn stays cooler. That makes it easier for the seas to freeze again in the Antarctic fall and winter, scientists say. This negative feedback is expected to continue, they added. Sea ice levels

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Newtown killer Adam Lanza may have launched his murder spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School as an “act of revenge,” the Daily News has learned. A close friend of Lanza’s mother told The News that the troubled boy was a target of relentless bullying when he attended the Connecticut school years ago. “I think Adam felt betrayed by the school and this was his act of revenge,” said Marvin LaFontaine, a friend of Nancy Lanza’s. “Nancy told me he was being picked on at school. That they were just torturing him.” Source and text corrected by Staff.
