Hostess faces bitter end in bankruptcy court

| NEW YORK — Hostess Brands Inc. plans to return to bankruptcy court on Wednesday seeking approval to move ahead with liquidations plans that would throw 18,500 people out of work, after a latch-ditch mediation effort met with failure. (Snip) Hostess failed to reach a contract agreement with the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco and Grain Millers Union, which represents 5,600 workers at the company. In a brief statement late Tuesday, the company said mediation proved unsuccessful.
|
Comments: The bakery workers union never showed good faith. Only their intention to go to the mat and drive Hostess into liquidation if necessary to make their point.
Someday soo I hope the union workers wake up and realize that their bully leaders are not serving their best interests. That will be a real revolution.

They´ve made concessions in the past apparently, so they feel they shouldn´t have to make any more concessions.
Congratulations, you held firm and lost your jobs.
That´ll show ´em.

In the interest of jobs and `fairness`, the Court should nullify the Baker`s union contract an order them back to work. Hostess can pay them whatever was their last offer and get on with making the sugary treats we all know and love.
Of course, that will happen as soon as Twinkies become our national dessert treat.

#3, you probably know this, but for those who don´t: a bankruptcy court has no authority to try and save "jobs" or deal in "fairness". In fact, most bankruptcies are manifestly unfair, as some creditors will be paid and some will be stiffed.
The Court´s only function is to see that the existing creditors get paid as much as possible on what they are owed. Now they won´t get it all, but a liquidation may well pay off much of the debt.
Best bet on what happens to twinkies: Grupo Bimbo buys them and moves all production to Mexico, where they not only will have massively lower labor costs but they also will have much lower sugar costs, due to a misguided US sugar tariff policy.
Who knows, soon Americans may start trying to illegally migrate into Mexico for the jobs. Well, and also for a government a little bit less corrupt than the one we have here now.
(okay, that last bit is tongue in cheek - but can anyone argue that our government today is any better than Mexico´s? I won´t.)

The unions are using the line about upper management getting large raises - one 300%, as a smoke-screen. Saddly the 47% are buying it. Too many figure life is supposed to be fair. All you have to do is show up.

Yes, there WAS black letter law regarding creditor priority, but that DIED in the GM ´bankrputcy´.
As far as the Uhhhbama admin. is concerned, the Courts can do ANYTHING.

There seems to be a misunderstanding about Grupo Bimbo. Although it is a Mexican company, it operates throughout the world (it is the #1 commercial baker in the world), but manufacturers its products locally in the various nations. In the United States, its headquarters is in Santa Fe, NM.
They are already manufacturing Oroweat and other American bread brands, Sara Lee (fresh baked items), Boboli, and so forth. In this country. I´m not sure that they will do anything different with Hostess. Why would they go and set up plants elsewhere if they buy all of Hostess´s assets which would include brands, recipes and equipment-filled plants, trucks, the works?

Instead of damning the ranks of union workers who have no choice in Union controlled states damn the state politics and union leaders for keeping them in a semi state of forced membership. Remember the thousands of union teachers who dropped out after they were greed of the union dues? 18 right to woek states should become 50.

Leaders of the five BRICS nations plan to create a development bank in a direct challenge to the World Bank that they accuse of Western bias. The bank would use $50 billion of seed capital shared equally between Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa but would undoubtedly be dominated by China. It would be the first institution of the informal forum started in 2009 amid the economic meltdown to chart a new and more equitable world economic order.

SANFORD -- For the first time, we are hearing from the teenager believed to be the last person to talk to Trayvon Martin moments before his deadly confrontation with George Zimmerman. The teen, known only as "Witness 8," is considered to be the prosecution´s key witness, but Zimmerman´s attorneys said she lied during a deposition by the Martin family´s attorney, Benjamin Crump. A new motion filed Monday said the state knew Witness 8, said to be a girlfriend of Trayvon Martin´s from Miami, had been lying, but never came out with it.

SANFORD - Attorneys for George Zimmerman have filed a new defense witness list, and it includes more than 130 people. Among them: Trayvon Martin´s mother and father, their attorney Benjamin Crump, former Sanford police Chief Bill Lee Jr. and former State Attorney Norm Wolfinger. It also includes Sanford City Manager Norton Bonaparte and several other members of Trayvon´s family, including his step-brother and the Oviedo cousin with whom he´d spent the night the evening before he was fatally shot. Attorneys seldom call all the witnesses they list, still the list placed in the official court file Monday is extraordinary

An unemployed illegal immigrant who has spent the last few years playing video games reportedly used records of his playing time to apply for and receive President Obama’s “deferred action” status. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Jose Muñoz was an out-of-work 25-year-old Mexican immigrant who graduated with honors from his Sheboygan, Wisconsin high school in 2005. Since that time, Muñoz — who was brought to the United States at the age of one — has been out of school and out of work, instead spending time helping his family with household chores and countless hours playing sports

A bill advancing through the Texas Legislature could drastically decrease the number of legal abortion facilities in the state. Supporters of Senate Bill 537, which would increase regulations for abortion facilities, say it will improve women’s safety. But abortion rights advocates say that the bill is a thinly veiled effort to close 37 of the state’s 42 abortion facilities, and that it would reduce women’s access to legal abortion. “I understand the suspicion, but this really is about improving health care for women getting abortions,” said the bill’s author, State Senator Bob Deuell, a Republican

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that
