These last couple of weeks I have divided my time largely between talking to cleanup crews, insurance adjusters, and contractors who promise, eventually, to undo the ravages of Hurricane Sandy and restore our house to its antediluvian semi-splendor — “All in good time, Mr. Kimball” — and reading Like the Roman, Simon Heffer’s magisterial 1998 biography of the great, if much and unfairly maligned, British statesman Enoch Powell. To many people these days, Powell is totally unknown. To those who do recall his name, he is the author of the so-called “Rivers of Blood Speech”

Ny and Nj will start recovering as soon as the checks start flowing to unionized,liberal contractors.

All they would really have to do is steal the billion in bearer bonds lost in the floods.

I wonder if you´ll see a "flood" of lawsuits aimed at safe companies because the contents got wet.

This is a very powerful article and should be taken seriously. The quotation: "Whom the gods would destroy. they first make mad" perfectly fits what happened in Britain and is now happening here. The people in charge are not behaving in a sane manner.

It is a tactic as old as argument itself. The person seeking to accomplish something he knows to be dishonest and unjust sets the parameters of the argument, and invites his opponent to debate the predetermined memes. If the debater does not first disown the false premise, and reset the terms, he has effectively lost from the outset. In the case of ObamaCare, the premise is that our healthcare system was irretrievably "broken." Congress had to step in and "fix" healthcare. Of course, this was a ruse for the easy marks. Charles Krauthammer has come to my rescue. You see, I’ve been on the receiving end of some spirited reaction since asserting in last weekend’s column that what we commonly call the Republican establishment — i.e., not all individual Republicans but GOP leadership — “is more sympathetic to Obama’s case for the welfare state than to the Tea Party’s case for limited government and individual liberty.” The statement may have been provocative in the sense of expressing a truth that people on the political Right prefer not to talk about. The Miss USA pageant was last night; it was won by Erin Brady, Miss Connecticut: (image) There is an interesting trend toward the Northeast in Miss USA, as last year’s winner (and this year’s Miss Universe) was Olivia Culpo, Miss Rhode Island. But today’s news about the pageant focused less on Miss Brady than on Marissa Powell, Miss Utah. Let’s take a step back and recognize the breadth and width of the Obama administration’s assault on the US economy. We tend to divide ourselves along economic lines, upper, middle and lower or working class. It’s clear that Barack Obama has a plan for all three levels. If you’re a top earner, in his mind you’ve “made enough money” and should pay more in taxes. That’s his plan for the wealthy: Pay more taxes. This will take some money out of investments and companies and send it to the government. Some jobs will be either lost or aborted.

One of the least remarked upon aspects of President Obama’s inaugural speech was his attempt to co-opt the Founding Fathers’ Declaration of Independence to bolster his liberal-left agenda.
