Insurer hit in data breach
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, by J. Scott Trubey

Original Article

Posted By:Ribicon, 11/21/2012 12:02:11 AM

Hackers accessed personal information—including Social Security numbers — of more than 28,000 Georgians after a computer breach at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. The unauthorized access extends to customers beyond Georgia, but the Ohio-based insurer declined to say how many clients elsewhere have been affected and in how many other states. The company is “not aware of any misuse of personal information at this time,” a Nationwide spokeswoman said in an e-mail statement Tuesday. The FBI and other law enforcement agencies are investigating, the spokeswoman told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The company did not disclose whether information was actually stolen

Comments:
More like, "Customers hit in data breach."

It´s remarkable how freely circulated Social Security numbers are allowed to be, considering the consequences of identity theft. Ongoing federal inaction on that front, even by the party that "cares about the little guy."

I used to work IT in a large bank. It is not possible in such a company to freely steal info. The security is massive.

When companies do loose stuff, it is gross negligence. The technology is readily available to "harden" their systems.

I think most stories like this are planted (or at least embellished) to get the public to want/demand Washington to intercede, take over all the banking Security Systems.

The FBI moved heaven and earth to get info on Petraeus and Broadwell but don´t seem to have a lot of interest in cracking down on the hacker industry.Maybe it´s because the hackers and FBI are on the same team.

Detroit – Detroit police are looking for suspects in the beating of a driver who investigators say accidentally hit a young child on the city’s east side. The incident happened on Morang near Cadieux in Detroit Wednesday afternoon. Debra Hughes says she saw the attack and claims it was a group of mostly teenagers who beat the man unconscious. Hughes told WWJ’s Stephanie Davis that the boy was hit after he ran into the street and that the driver stopped to check on the child, and when he did, he was beaten. Once a five-star hotel and luxury apartment block, the 45-storey so-called “Tower of David” skyscraper that looms over the Venezuelan capital of Caracas is now home to 3,000 people, and thought to be the world’s tallest slum. Intended to be a jewel in the crown of a shining new financial district, the incomplete building was abandoned in around 1994 when its developer died. By 2007, squatters had seized what had become a huge concrete skeleton. Now, residents regard the “Tower of David” as a safe haven from the violence and turf warfare that blights the capital’s street-level

Washington — The U.S. Energy Department said Wednesday that it is reviving a long-dormant $25 billion auto loan program and is reaching out to auto suppliers to make new loans. Created by Congress in 2007, the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program hasn’t made a new loan since March 2011 and came under scrutiny after two of five companies that received loans halted production. The auto loan program was created to spur the production of more fuel-efficient vehicles. Since 2009, the program awarded $8.4 billion in loans and has about $16 billion in unused funding. Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. All along, the administration has neglected to admit that Obamacare is

Big changes could be just down the road for North Carolina drivers. A proposal is in the works that would change the state tax system to charge drivers by the mile, instead of at the gas pump. The proposal would be to charge a half cent per mile for cars, which would generate almost $500 million in annual state revenue. A driver who travelled 15,000 miles in a year would pay about $75. "Basically you pay per the mile. With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.

The human kindling that makes up the flammable Republican base may soon burst into flames, again. Portions of that excitable cohort are looking — some with fawn-like eyes filled with hurt, others with sparks shooting from eyes narrowed like gun slits — askance at other Republicans urging Jeb Bush to seek the 2016 presidential nomination. A candidacy by Florida’s former governor would be desirable. But if Republicans want to avoid intra-party carnage, they should be very careful about doing what The Post recently reported: “Many of the Republican Party’s most powerful insiders and financiers have begun a behind-the-scenes campaign to draft
