| David Nussbaum, the Chief Executive of WWF-UK, is very cross with the Prime Minister. (H/T Eureferendum) "His lack of vocal leadership on climate change and energy is jeopardising some of the most promising green shoots of recovery. The UK needs significant investment in green infrastructure, yet he is letting a rogue pack within his party play politics with such an important issue." We´ve been hearing a lot of this sort of thing from green activist groups recently. The recent Greenpeace sting on Chris Heaton Harris and Lord Howell, this alleged coalition of "influential investors" whingeing in the Guardian, the

Damn! I´m always too late to get into these scams. If I had only got a bunch of weirdo investors to finance a few of those bird Cusinarts, I could have been drawing a half million a year salary! That´s me, I guess. The gravy train always pulls out just before I get to the station.

wwf and greenpeace need to prove to the world just how honest and trustworthy they are. An independent audit of their assets and holdings should show how benevolent their actions are.
Just a joke. You will never find out the depths of their depravity. My thanks and prayers go out to the French secret service.

Latest 20.00 (15.00) The FBI has just put out this statement from Boston, ticking off the media: Quote Contrary to widespread reporting, no arrest has been made in connection with the Boston Marathon attack. Over the past day and a half, there have been a number of press reports based on information from unofficial sources that has been inaccurate. Since these stories often have unintended consequences, we ask the media, particularly at this early stage of the investigation, to exercise caution and attempt to verify information through appropriate official channels before reporting.

Margaret Thatcher´s only granddaughter paid tribute to the former Prime Minister with a clear and heartfelt reading at her funeral today. Speaking with a pronounced American accent, Amanda Thatcher, 19, read from the book of Ephesians to mourners in St Paul´s Cathedral. The teenager showed how she takes after her grandmother as she spoke with self-assurance and confidence during the service in front of the Queen, former Prime Ministers and foreign dignitaries. [Snip] Standing close to her grandmother´s coffin which had a Union Jack draped over it, she read the reading which had been chosen by Mrs Thatcher before her

Baroness Thatcher was today honoured with a sombre but spectacular funeral ceremony that paid tribute to the ‘courage and perseverance’ of Britain´s greatest peacetime prime minister. An estimated 250,000 mourners lined the streets to pay tribute to the UK´s one and only female political leader, and broke into spontaneous applause, cheers and whistles of support rang around the streets of London as the coffin passed them. Mourners also threw white roses in the path of the gun carriage that carried Lady Thatcher through the capital. The widespread protests and disorder that had been predicted failed to happen, with only a

Britain’s top U.S.-based diplomat capped off his first visit to Charleston on Monday by calling for stronger trade and tourism ties between his nation and United States. Charleston is well-positioned to capitalize in both instances, said Ambassador Sir Peter Westmacott. As a major East Coast port city, Charleston could become “a major hub for this connection into the U.K.,” he said at a World Trade Center Charleston luncheon at the Harbour Club. “You are one of the most important port cities in the United States,” he said. Also, Westmacott urged local travel officials to direct more marketing at British tourists.

Leicester University voiced concern after photographs emerged showing hand-written signs directing male and female students to sit in separate sections at a public talk on the existence of God organised by the university’s Islamic Society. The meeting was addressed by Hamza Tzortzis, an Islamic speaker who tours university campuses, who was at the centre of controversy over segregation at University College London (UCL) last month. UCL announced that it was banning his organisation, the Islamic Education & Research Academy (IERA), from its campus after a debate he was addressing descended into farce over the issue of segregation.

WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court left in doubt Monday whether gun owners have a 2nd Amendment right to carry a firearm in public. Without a comment or dissent, the justices turned down a gun-rights challenge to a New York law that strictly limits who can legally carry a weapon when they are on the streets. To obtain a "concealed carry" permit, New Yorkers must convince a county official that they have a "special need for protection" that goes beyond living or working in a high-crime area. Only about one-tenth of 1% of New Yorkers have concealed-carry permits, compared to more than 6%

In deference to Lady Thatcher’s immense popularity across the Pond, the US House of Representatives paid tribute to her. But the US Senate has been oddly reluctant to follow suit. Sources in Washington tell Mr Steerpike that a Republican resolution is ‘on hold’ because Democrat majority leader Harry Reid, with the help of a Senator Schumer, is blocking the move. [Snip] US senators were slow to authorise President Reagan’s attack on the late and unlamented ‘Mad Dog’ of the Middle East. But the Gipper wasn’t worried because the Iron Lady allowed the assault to be launched from these shores.

Friends and allies of Baroness Thatcher expressed ‘surprise and disappointment’ last night as it emerged President Obama is not planning to send any serving member of his administration to her funeral. Whitehall sources have revealed that the U.S. delegation at tomorrow’s service in St Paul’s Cathedral will be led by two Reagan era secretaries of state: James Baker and George Shultz. Though President Obama himself had not been expected to attend, there had been speculation that he would be represented either by Vice President Joe Biden or wife Michelle. Protocol: President Obama declined to send a high-level delegation to Wednesday´s funeral of Britain´s Margaret Thatcher. It´s a measure of how little he values the special relationship — and a sign of his own smallness. Back in more gracious times, vice presidents routinely attended funerals of foreign dignitaries. As such, the presence of Vice President Joe Biden — if not Obama himself — would seem fitting for as significant a U.S. ally as the late Prime Minister Thatcher, if not out of warmth of feeling, then simply to represent the U.S.´ gratitude. President Obama angrily blamed the defeat Wednesday of his centerpiece gun-control proposal on lies spread by the National Rifle Association, calling it “a pretty shameful day for Washington.” “The gun lobby and its allies willfully lied about the bill,” Mr. Obama said in the White House rose garden about 90 minutes after the vote. “It came down to politics.” As he spoke, Mr. Obama was surrounded by family members of victims of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting. Also with him was former Rep. Gabby Giffords of Arizona, wounded in an assassination attempt.

BOSTON -- The bombs that blew up seconds apart at the finish line of one of the world´s most storied races left the streets spattered with blood and glass, three dead, including an 8-year-old boy, more than 140 wounded and gaping questions of who chose to attack at the Boston Marathon and why. Federal investigators said no one had claimed responsibility for the bombings one of the city´s most famous civic holidays, Patriots Day. Authorities on Tuesday revealed little new information about the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon, the most high-profile bombing on U.S. soil in more than a decade and a tragedy that presents a new test for President Obama. Obama, like all Americans, is standing by, waiting for answers as to who planted two bombs improvised from pressure cookers at the finish line of the storied race, and why. Three Americans were killed in Monday´s attack and more than 170 others were injured. "Anytime bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror," Obama said,

The Senate delivered a devastating blow to President Obama’s agenda to regulate guns Wednesday by defeating a bipartisan proposal to expand background checks. It failed by a vote of 54 to 46, with 5 Democrats voting against it. Only 4 Republicans supported it. Democratic Sens. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Max Baucus (Mont.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Mark Begich (Alaska) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) voted against it. Reid supported the measure but voted against it to preserve his ability to bring the measure up again. GOP Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Susan Collins (Maine), Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Mark Kirk

MSNBC contributor Joy-Ann Reid told the host of Now, Alex Wagner, that she thought President Barack Obama’s response to the attack on the Boston Marathon on Monday was powerful and comforting in a way that President George W. Bush’s response to the attacks of September 11, 2001, was not. She accused Bush of being unavailable to the American people for the “first couple weeks” after the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Reid told Wagner that the president’s statement actively combatted the intention of the terrorists, which is to make their targets feel “discombobulated.” “Having, sort of

As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.

Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), is threatening to back an election challenge against Sen. Jeff Flake if the Arizona Republican votes against legislation to expand background checks. At a Christian Science Monitor breakfast on Tuesday, Kelly said he would back an opponent to Flake if the "right candidate" was available and if the senator failed to support a background check bill, according to reports. Flake, who is not up for reelection until 2018, has been close to Kelly and Giffords. But Kelly said the issue of control trumped their ties.
