Dome of the Rocket
Ha´aretz (Israel), by Inbal Orpaz

Original Article

Posted By:Pete Stone, 11/19/2012 4:47:43 PM

As Operation Pillar of Defense launches into its sixth day, a clear hero has already emerged: Iron Dome. Since the operation began, Iron Dome has intercepted more than 300 rockets launched at Israel with a stellar success rate of 85 percent. The anti-missile system has become a huge source of pride for Israelis, both because of the lives it has undoubtedly saved and because the technology is homegrown. After the targeted killing of Ahmed Jabari last Wednesday, preparations to ready Iron Dome went full speed ahead and around the clock.

Comments:
Iron Dome has stopped a large percentage of the Hamas rockets. Of course, it didn´t hurt that the first IDF air strikes destroyed most of the Hamas underground facilities and most of their arsenal of rockets.

How reliable is the data? Similar hoopla over the Patriot system during Desert Storm - Bush 41 even made a PR visit to the factory. However, when the real numbers were subsequently confirmed...

Hamas has an inventory of more than 12,000 missiles. This is Operation Exhaust the Dome.

What I don´t understand is why the US refused to sell the Phalanx CIWS technology to Israel. It´s tailor-made for this type of defense. I realize it´s a shipboard-based system, but it had to be tested on land first. Easily adaptable, I should think.

I can´t see how a "stay" missile aimed at Jerusalem couldn´t strike the Dome of the Rock.

I agree with poster #5, Hamas is not very good at aiming their rockets and have hit Muslim neighborhoods several times.

This would be a propitious time for a "stray" rocket to "accidentally" level the Dome of the Rock, and any other spots of terrorist planning that are known to Mossad.

The standby attorney for the Army psychiatrist accused in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting told a military judge Wednesday that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan appears intent on receiving the death penalty. Lt. Col. Kris Poppe said during the second day of Hasan´s trial that he´s willing to step in and serve as Hasan´s attorney. But if Hasan continues to work toward being executed, Poppe asked that his responsibilities as co-counsel be minimized. "I object," Hasan said in response. "That´s a twist of the facts." Judge Col. Tara Osborn then cleared the courtroom and later said the trial would

Just in case you were under the impression that the fiscal cliff debates were carried out with a high level of respect and intellectualism, Politico reports how nasty things got on Friday. It was only a few days before the nation would go over the fiscal cliff, no bipartisan agreement was in sight, and Reid had just publicly accused Boehner of running a "dictatorship" in the House and caring more about holding onto his gavel than striking a deal. "Go [redacted by poster] yourself," Boehner sniped as he pointed his finger at Reid, according to multiple sources present.

Who throws a shoe? Honestly! That would be 36-year-old Alison Ernst of Phoenix, Arizona, who was charged Thursday night with disorderly conduct by the Las Vegas Police Department after allegedly throwing a shoe at former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. According to NBC News, who spoke with a Secret Service official, the U.S. Attorney’s office has declined federal prosecution. Ernst was wearing shoes on Thursday night when she attended a speech Clinton was giving in Las Vegas, but apparently brought an extra one specifically to throw at the former secretary of state. The official said the incident appeared to be “premeditated.”

Many Americans have been watching with great consternation the ongoing struggle between the Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Marshals against Cliven Bundy and his family. There are no signs of either side relinquishing their position. Many onlookers have been informed that this dispute is over protecting the desert tortoise. But it is nothing of the sort. In fact, the reality of the dispute goes far underneath what is being talked about. The more appropriate source of the dispute is ground water as well as surface water -- this is a war over water. Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators. Legislatures are in a far better position than judges to assess the

A Nevada cattle rancher appears to have won his week-long battle with the federal government over a controversial cattle roundup that had led to the arrest of several protesters. Cliven Bundy went head to head with the Bureau of Land Management over the removal of hundreds of his cattle from federal land, where the government said they were grazing illegally. Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) is now accusing the Keystone pipeline of being a cancer risk. Her first point was that the pipeline “will bring 830,000 barrels of dirty tar sands oil into our nation every day.” She then segued to point #2 by asserting that the heavy tar sands oil will put people who live near refineries at risk for cancer: Significantly higher levels of dangerous air pollutants and carcinogens have been documented downwind from tar sands refineries, and in these areas people are suffering higher rates of the types of cancers linked to these toxic chemicals, including leukemia and

President Obama stood Friday with the Rev. Al Sharpton and accused Republicans of trying to keep millions of Americans from voting, in a fiery speech days after new revelations about Sharpton’s past as an FBI informant. “The right to vote is threatened today in a way that it has not been since the Voting Rights Act became law nearly five decades ago,” Obama told the annual convention of Sharpton’s National Action Network in Manhattan. Obama’s appearance represented a presidential seal of approval of Sharpton’s role as a civil rights activist, amid the new revelations about how Sharpton used a wire to record

Let me obliterate a bit of confusion here: the Obama administration attempted to go to war with a rancher in Nevada. Let me amplify a little bit of truth: They tucked tail and have returned home. And let me add a bit of clarity: they had no choice! As the nation began to become familiar with the plight of the family of Cliven Bundy, many of us harkened back to another standoff in which the Federal government attempted to bully it´s outcome: Waco, Texas and the Branch Davidian massacre. It is telling that in the Nevada case the feds pulled out so

Say what you will about Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), but they know a train wreck when they see it. They also know when to separate themselves from the cranks and the losers on the right. Although both supported the shutdown and were heartily supported by tea party groups in their own Senate races, neither one has endorsed Matt Bevin in Kentucky, Milton Wolf in Kansas or Chris McDaniel in Mississippi. In fact, Cruz’s office confirms he hasn’t endorsed anyone in the primaries. He may weigh in after the primaries. Rand Paul has endorsed two very establishment

President Obama labeled complaints about voter fraud “bogus” and accused Republicans of cynically trying to prevent Americans from accessing the polls in a fiery speech Friday at a civil rights forum hosted by Al Sharpton. Obama argued that attempts in some states to impose new voter identification restrictions were actually efforts by Republicans to make “it harder, not easier to vote.” And the president said that while voter fraud should be prevented, it rarely occurred. “So let´s be clear, the real voter fraud is the people who try to deny our rights by making bogus arguments about voter fraud,” Obama said. It’s hardly been a secret that in recent years the moderate center of the Democrat party has been driven away and what remains is a conglomeration of disparate blocs which, to date, the party has been able to treat as if there were no conflicting interests between them. As the midterm elections approach and the administration’s incompetence, along with the distaste for the president’s signature ObamaCare legislation, drive the party’s chances down further, the make-believe coalition of opposites may well crumble if the opposition doesn’t blow it. Democrats hope to retain control of the Senate and recapture the House by driving

A brazen flash mob has been caught on camera storming a California store and making off with $20,000 worth of sunglasses. Surveillance footage shows eight women piling into a Sunglass Hut and crowding around display cases. Shielding workers from what they´re doing, they quickly stuff dozens of fashion specs into their bags. A store clerk pleads with them to stop, before running out of the shot to get help and dial 911. The thieves then all bolt outside and escape in a waiting SUV. The incident occurred at the Valencia Town Center mall, in Santa Clarita, at 3 p.m. on

The last rancher in southern Nevada has won his battle to graze cows on public land after a week-long stand off with federal agents.
