Billions in bearer bonds
could be lost due to
Hurricane Sandy: sources

New York Post, by Michael Gartland

Original Article

It’s the biggest mystery on Wall Street. Hurricane Sandy floodwaters inundated a 10,000-square-foot underground vault downtown, soaking 1.3 million bond and stock certificates — including bearer bonds that function like cash — and putting them in danger of turning to mush. A contractor working for the vault owner, the Depository Trust and Clearing Corp., is feverishly working to restore the paper. But the value of the threatened notes under 55 Water St. remains unknown to all but the innermost circle of Wall Street bankers. One source said $70 billion in bearer bonds were in jeopardy. DTCC —

Comments:
Is it too much to expect that whoever was responsible for protection of these bonds would have had the foresight to keep them from harm?? After all, there was ample warning about the damage possible by this storm. The level of incompetence in this nation is astounding.

This is just one... There are probably thousands of flooded basement vaults with the same problem. A lot of ´wealth´ will evaporate when these vaults are dried out.

Didn´t DTC ever hear of zip-lock bags???

I´ve seen many bond certs. High grade paper, almost like U.S. currency. Almost impossible to destroy U.S. dollar bills in water.

Just to add, as the article states, bearer munis have not been issued since 1982. Most munis have maturities 30 years or less, meaning that the number of bearer munis is very small. In addition, I have heard that DTC usually registers most bearer munis, with the rare exception of those held in safekeeping.

As already stated, I think this is a scam, FEMA handing out money to WS banks, obama as the card dealer.

President Obama pushed back on criticism of his recent appearance with comedian Zach Galifianakis to promote the Affordable Care Act, noting that President Lincoln "loved telling the occasional bawdy joke." The president´s remarks, during an interview with ESPN Radio´s Colin Cowherd that aired Thursday, were an indirect jab at Fox News host Bill O´Reilly, who argued during a segment of his show earlier this month that the 16th president would never have agreed to such an appearance. "First of all, if you read back on Lincoln, he loved telling the occasional bawdy joke and being out among regular folks," Obama

Budget cuts at the Coast Guard are coming at an unfortunate time. As the service, like other branches of the military, makes do with less, drug smugglers are increasingly turning to the high seas -- and challenging the Coast Guard´s already strained resources. Officials tell Fox News that drug smugglers are moving some of their operations away from the U.S.-Mexico land border and out into the ocean where it´s easier to avoid law enforcement. And for U.S. patrollers, that theater is becoming harder and harder to defend. "As the Department of Homeland Security became more effective at stopping smuggling across

President Obama’s reliance on the bully pulpit to bump up ObamaCare’s enrollment and hammer Republicans in an election year is facing a serious challenge with the crisis in Ukraine. But his event in Orlando was largely overshadowed by his announcement earlier in the day of new sanctions on Moscow, part of a showdown with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The administration isn’t giving up its efforts even as Obama seeks to contain Russia, and the cross-currents have led to some odd juxtapositions. On Thursday, the day began with the release of a video of Obama joking with talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres

The political community is abuzz about the growing possibility that Republicans might win control of the Senate this November. But little attention has been paid to a larger and more significant trend. Like former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, President Obama saw his party lose control of Congress during his time in the White House. Never before in American history have three presidents in a row received such a rebuke from the voters. This is a fundamental rejection of both political parties.
