| Chris Christie has a reputation as a politician who is more willing than most to laugh at himself - and he lived up to that image during a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live last night. The governor of New Jersey played himself during the ´Weekend Update´ segment of the iconic sketch comedy show, and drew big laughs with his self-deprecating performance. The witty and good-natured act could boost his national profile and help his ambition for a run at the White House in 2016. Christie, notable for his large stature as much as his tough-talking demeanour,

Christie´s biggest danger to America is his lack of understanding of Islam. Whether it is willful, honest or mendacious is impossible to say. What can be said from his public remarks is that he does not understand Islam and seriously underestimates the danger it poses to American institutions.
The charm this man appears to possess for many people has always escaped me. He seems to me nothing but a loud-mouthed, ill-mannered, publicity hound with a serious case of pathological obesity. That anyone would even consider him for higher office is something I cannot understand.

Chris Christie started how many GOP pols do...with a strong idea and a backbone. He took on a budgetary nightmare and turned it around, took on the all-powerful teachers unions who make previous govs quake, took on the press and stood up for his ideas. That was once something to admire. Then high school-itis set in. It´s been like watching an 80´s movie where the nerd becomes popular before turning into the popular jerk everyone hated. But this is a real life tragedy...he embraced the man with the triple-six on his forehead. Bad deal, Christie. Go away now before you make it worse for yourself.

Following Tuesday´s special election victory, Democrat Robin Kelly will start a new job in Congress as the least senior member of a House dominated by Republicans. That political reality is not lost on Kelly, who said her first task is to restore district offices and concentrate on constituent services as she replaces disgraced former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. in the South Side and south suburban 2nd Congressional District. "Yes, we´ve seen some tough times and some setbacks. Actually, she is backing off. Here’s the thing about her now-famous MSNBC promo: Either she’s saying something radical or she’s saying something so banal that it’s barely even worth saying. The radical interpretation is that she thinks parents should have less say over how their children are raised and that “communities” should have a larger role. The very, very banal interpretation is that she thinks communities should do more to improve children’s lives and that thinking of them as “our children” might help forge that mentality. The money line in the promo that pointed to the radical interpretation

Richard Pollack at the Washington Examiner reports on a painless way to handle sequester costs -- cut out the unnecessary duplicative federal programs: Duplicative drug abuse and treatment services are strewn over 76 federal programs. Housing services are spread across 20 different agencies. Renewable energy projects go through 23 federal agencies and 130 sub-agencies. Even federal catfish inspections are done by three different agencies. These are only a few of 162 examples identified by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, a congressional watchdog agency, of fragmented, duplicative federal programs and services.

WASHINGTON- Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says he wants U.S. military law changed so senior commanders can´t overturn courts-martial verdicts in major crimes such as rape. Hagel said the Pentagon´s top lawyers would prepare legislation for Congress that would strip commanders´ power to toss out convictions, "except for certain minor offenses that would not ordinarily warrant trial by court-martial." Convicted defendants still would be able to appeal their cases. But in a move berated by advocacy groups for military sexual-assault victims, Hagel also said he would recommend commanders retain the power to alter courts-martial sentences,

If presidential politics ever involved time travel, President Obama might be in a little trouble. If an election between Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama were held today, 58% would vote for Reagan over Obama, according to a survey of 1,000 Americans age 18 and older conducted by Kelton Research for the National Geographic Channel. Though when the field is narrowed to people ages 18-34 -- those either too young to have known Reagan as president or too young to remember much -- the gap shrinks to 51% in favor of Reagan.

With all due respect to Mother Jones´s conversation-leaker-in-chief David Corn, the recordings published today of a conversation between Sen. Mitch McConnell and some consultants disparaging Ashley Judd is not news. It´s the sausage being made. We´ve got full background here, but the toplines are this: Corn got hold of a conversation apparently recorded during a presentation by consultants to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell´s reelection campaign. The consultants were opposition researchers, hired by the campaign to ferret out damaging information about actress Ashley Judd, who at one point considered running against McConnell.

He also noted that as a young state legislator, he sponsored a bill

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors. Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Members of Congress have asked hundreds of questions at hearings conducted by several investigative committees, but many of the most significant have been left unanswered. Margaret Thatcher had more impact on the world than any woman ruler since Catherine the Great of Russia. Not only did she turn around—decisively—the British economy in the 1980s, she also saw her methods copied in more than 50 countries. "Thatcherism" was the most popular and successful way of running a country in the last quarter of the 20th century and into the 21st. Her origins were humble. Born Oct. 13, 1925, she was the daughter of a grocer in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham. Alfred Roberts was no ordinary shopkeeper.
