| Israel said that it will install a fifth "Iron Dome" battery before the end of the year, adding another installation to the country´s missile defense system, which has proven itself this week, intercepting more than 150 rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. The missile defense system, which can identify enemy rockets, determine if they pose a threat to populated areas, and destroy them within a matter of seconds, has been praised by Israel´s leaders for saving hundreds of lives. The system, however, comes with a steep price. Each interceptor missile, which includes a radar guidance system, costs $40,000.

I wonder if this writer would worry about the cost if a rocket was headed his way?

What was the cost of the stimulus package?? And how many lives did it save?
I know it saved one job-- Obama´s! Paid for enough votes to seat this pain in the butt back into our collective lives for four more years.

"Steep cost?" What is the cost if the attack is successful? Oh I see.. takes money away from food stamps and free phones!

Steep price? The population do Israel is about 8 million, so 150 do these interceptors have cost each citizen ~ 75 cents. The world is upside down.

No wonder Obama appears to be anti-Israeli, while snubbing Prime Minister Netanyahu. There is much to be admired in the strength and patriotism which exists there, to the vexation of the U.S. president. .... I´m still amazed at American Jews, who are apt to watch Israel attacked from all sides, while America opts to stay uninvolved.

It helps to read the article. There was no focus on the cost, it was merely mentioned as informational. The piece is really about the effectiveness of the system.

With the Egyptians no longer preventing the rockets from getting to Gaza, the cost could eventually be a concern in the long run as expensive missiles are used to destroy cheap missiles. Israel will have to plug the hole in the weapons transfer dike. This will mean boots on the ground in Gaza and a possible confrontation with Egypt.

While I find it hard to believe each interceptor missile goes for $40k apiece, wondering why Israel didn´t wallpaper the land along the Gaza strip with these. Poster #1´s comment also noted.

It is a good thing if Israel has a defensive weapon that is effective. More power to them. The real question on its cost is what is the cost of this defense vs the cost of the offensive weapon fired against them? Can the muslim hoardes bankrupt them by firing on them. Defence is good but defence alone is a dangerous proposition. Why is the left so opposed to defensive weapons against the nukes in the cold war ridiculing them as "star wars". The left is animated by our enemies!

"Read the article"? Surely #7 jests.
Most of the replies posted on the site are generated by the headline and/or the intro.
It takes a serious reader/poster to read the article before posting. The essence of the article is almost never in either the headline or the intro. But...
Failing that, a driveby wisecrack will do?
This is a highly informational article - maybe too much so as it gives more information on the system than seems prudent.

But Israel is also firing its own missiles into Gaza to destroy Hamas´s missile installations, which will continually decrease Hamas´s missile supply aimed at Israel.
Until now, the only people capable of destroying evildoers while remaining invulnerable themselves have been comicbook heroes. Superman, for example. Now we have Supernation, Israel with its Iron Dome.
There is no hope for the Palestinians unless they beat their missiles into plowshares and start working peacefully with Israel to rebuild their country.

Israel in cooperation with Northrup Grumman in 1996 successfully developed THEL - tactical high energy laser - to shoot down incoming ordnance.
2002 the design shot down incoming test rockets and missels. The mobile version successfully shot down 40+ incoming mortar rounds.
They´ve got equipment, like we have equipment no one has yet seen.

While it is true the cost was only mentioned in passing, Israel can afford it. THEY have not squandered their national treasure on welfare queens, cell phones and bribes to unions. They do not have the crushing debt the USA has, and never will. They have wisely spent their money where it counts: defense.

$40,000 a piece? That´s CHEAP!
An AGM-65 Maverick, optically guided, tank-busting missile hanging off a hard point on an A-10 Warthog (or F-15E, F-16, F/A-18...) costs $1 million a piece! That´s one million dollars for one missile. And it takes out a tank.
At $40,000 a piece, Israel can get 25 of these interceptor missiles for the price of ONE of our AGM-65´s.
Ldot posters: doing the research the paid, legacy media can´t be bothered to do on their own.

Iron Dome is proving an incredibly wonderful and effective system, BUT:
1. It is not Reagan´s "star wars" ballistic missile defense system, much as a unicycle is not a Chevy Tahoe,
and
2. $40,000 is very cheap for a modern precision-guided missile, BUT it is shooting down a lot of Qassam style missiles that cost about $500. It *can* shoot down bigger stuff, if there is any, up to even small aircraft. The US makes the Patriot missile for big stuff, at about $2,000,000 per missile - but even that is not the same as Reagan´s "star wars".
Mass-produced let´s say the Iron Dome "tamir" missiles could get down to even $10,000 each. Again, for modern military stuff, that would be next to a miracle. But again on the other side, sometimes you have to launch 2 or 3 or 4 to be sure to hit a target. And finally, some get through, especially when a bunch come at one time.
I´m really curious how the lasers are coming along too, but it turns out they are just NOT the same as Star Trek phases. Latest public info on them is at the 10kw level, they can only run for a few minutes before overheating, and targeting is a MUCH tougher task than anyone really thought.

Get ready for the Occupy "progressives" to intervene actively, #14. From a forum in the area close to where I once lived:
Dear Neighbors,
Here´s information about a local demonstration this afternoon:
And there follows a link to the OccupyRaleigh org which demands a stop to the so-called war on Gaza and "an end to Israel´s most recent attack on the Palestinian people."
Of course, no mention of the obvious--the number of rockets fired into Israel in the last year and, particularly, the number fired in the last few days (which was 371 last time I looked and must be more by now). The IDF blog website has been hacked by Anonymous, unfortunately. I´ll post a separate thread on that in a moment.

Just think of all Israel is losing in tourism, which I am sure accounts for much of their income.
I personally took a trip to Israel after my first year of employment and it has been and will always be the highlight of my life. The Bible came alive and the respect I gained for the Jewish people, of course, knowing Jesus was a Jew, and that was His homeland.
God bless the Jewish people and I pray for their survival and even rebounding again and again, thanks to their faith and values, which we, in the US, could use/emulate!
The family values I witnessed there would put US to shame. They spent time together and appreciated each other, knowing God´s blessings and His promise to bless Israel and also, to all who blessed Israel, He would bless and those who cursed Israel, He would curse.
Time to stop and consider that it is God Himself who is cursing those who come against Israel, yet they continue to think they can challege Almighty God and win. Not too smart!
Pray for Israel and receive God´s continual blessings now in this life and God´s promise of eternal life to all who accept/receive Jesus as their Messiah/Lord/Savior.

It seems an important piece of that information has bee ignored in the posts. That info is--- Dick Clark WH adviser and ABC reporter has just told the Muzzies that the system can´t eliminate hundreds of the 500 dollar missiles thrown at them at once. Gee thanks Obie your media is still at work helping your Muslim brotherhood. Yeah and Obie tried to force Bibbie to tell him if and where Israel has nukes and got stonewalled. Many American Jews seem to have a lingering collective guilt over the 6 million Jews murdered in WW2 while they didn´t lift a hand that makes them wish Israel gone and forgotten.

I remember when SDS or some leftist organization on campus was ridiculing the Reagan Star Wars program in the late 1980´s during my college days. They thought it was a pipe dream then but for all the grass the Bill Ayers-types were smoking, they didn´t have the imagination or foresight that any anti-missile missile system would work.
I know Iron Dome and the SM-3 missile system will probably not work as well for intercontinental ballistic missiles, which would be coming almost straight down and still be lethal after its destruction particularly if it is a nuke, but the tech works fine if you can intercept the ICBM in the boost phase as it is climbing up to cruising altitude. Probably, a very high energy laser may work better if it could hit the ICBM before it descends but the radiation dispersion in the environment, though less lethal in the short term than the blast damage, would still be destructive in the long run.

Four senators may have signed on to a gun background check deal Wednesday, but only two showed up for the news conference — in part because Pennsylvania GOP Sen. Patrick J. Toomey’s public support for the bill hinged on not having to stand next to Democratic Sen. Charles E. Schumer of New York. The background check bill, which would close the gun show loophole and expand checks to online sales, is officially co-sponsored by Schumer; Toomey; Joe Manchin III, D-W.Va.; and Mark S. Kirk, R-Ill. But only Toomey and Manchin appeared before the cameras.

The Gang of Eight — four Democratic and four Republican U.S. senators — have been meeting behind closed doors since January to produce “comprehensive immigration reform.” That will mean a multi-thousand-page bill that no one reads. You know the saying “fool me twice.” Americans got bamboozled in 2010, when the 2,572 page Obama health law was rushed through Congress unread. The surprises buried in that law are causing havoc. Let’s not repeat the mistake of “comprehensive” reform. Congress needs to fix immigration one step at a time, passing individual bills in plain English on border security, hiring, access to benefits

Spellman claimed in a tweet that if Winter, who faces a subpoena and potential contempt of court charges for protecting her sources, worked for the New York Times instead of Fox News, the case would be garnering far greater exposure. “Observation: If @janawinter, who may go to jail to protect sources, worked for @nytimes instead of @FoxNews the case would be huge,” Spellman tweeted Sunday night.

Obama will release his budget this week, and we already know that he´s going to try to stake out a treacherous "middleground" as he attempts to cast himself as a bold centrist, willing to stand apart from leftist Democrats. He´ll do so by, reportedly, introducing a Chained CPI, which is a way of cutting Social Security by using a different inflation measure that won´t rise as much. Liberals are already livid. While politicians talk about expanding background checks for gun owners, I’m starting to think that what we really need are IQ tests for political officeholders. The only problem is, that might leave us with a lot of vacancies in Congress and America’s statehouses. The debacle over New York’s rushed-through gun bill is one example of what happens when enthusiasm meets stupid. But another is to be found in Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), who supports a ban on full-capacity magazines without understanding what a magazine actually is. Last week, DeGette justified her position this way: “I will tell you these are ammunition,

Secretary of State John Kerry is worth some $200 million, give or take a yacht. So his decision to slap a 5% pay cut on himself in solidarity with government employees squeezed by sequestration won’t likely hurt him much. But he’s saving taxpayers another way, too — if unintentionally. And it’s downright troubling. How else is Kerry saving money? He’s failing to hire folks to fill key spots at his agency. Terrific. Think about it: With the North Koreans threatening nuclear strikes against America — and Kerry himself preparing to visit South Korea this week — wouldn’t it be a tad helpful

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Although the first votes on gun -control legislation have yet to be cast, by some measures the National Rifle Association has already won. Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.

Rand Paul have a formulated solution to come up with new American values

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. "The politics has been relentless and that continues," Sebelius said. "There was some hope that once the Supreme Court ruled in July, and then once an election occurred there would be a sense that, ´This is the law of the land, let´s get on board, let´s make this work.´"

In a stunning end to one of the most aggressively unsuccessful tenures in retail history, JCPenney (JCP) last night announced that CEO Ron Johnson would be leaving effective immediately. Myron Ullman, Johnson´s predecessor at JCPenney, takes office as CEO. When Johnson was initially wooed by JCPenney, it was to serve as CEO with Ullman as Chairman. In January 2012, Ullman was unceremoniously removed from the board. Gone with Ullman was any control the Board of Directors had over Ron Johnson and his control of JCPenney resources. The state of California is reportedly considering legislation that would force group insurance policies to provide infertility treatment for gay and lesbian couples. Two men who have sex with each other for a year and do not produce a baby would be considered “infertile” under the proposed legislation. So would two women having sex. Since biology does not allow those without a uterus to conceive or those without a penis to impregnate, every year-long gay couple in California would potentially be covered by this new provision of California law.
