Tampa´s Wisteria Lane: Inside the Florida base where Petraeus and his generals held ´wild parties every night´

| The Tampa, Florida, military base that has gained notoriety for its connection to General David Petraeus´ sex scandal has been compared to Wisteria Lane from the show Desperate Housewives where out-of-control parties with top brass are a nightly occurrence, and where social climbing is a favorite pastime. Those visiting MacDill Air Force Base for the first time will likely be surprised to see the sprawling bayfront homes with covered porches, the upscale gym, golf course, boat rentals and other trappings of the good life that bear little resemblance to nearly any other military outpost.

Are you kidding? The U.S. gets much better press from the Daily Mail, in general, than from any mainstream American paper.
On another topic - flipping through the photo stream, it struck me that, as much as I sympathize with her, the good wife of Gen. Petraeus didn´t seem to be trying at all to keep her husband in terms of dressing for him and making an effort to look attractive. Not that it excuses him from making a fool of himself and bringing rack & ruin on his family and botching the Petraeus for Prez scenario so dismally.

#3, At first glance it might seem that way. But giving it a second read there are examples showing it was US sources who provided the information, from an Obama administration official to quotes from St. Petersburg PI Jack Belich and Tampa Bay Magazine Editor Aaron Fodiman.
On balance I think the Mail runs many more positive stories about the US than the sleazy goings-on of a couple of generals.

There are military bases on water, Jacksonville, Groton, Norfolk, etc. their biggest brass get the nicest homes, on the water. All employees have access to the amenities on base. Even the guys who live off base. What´s horrible here is the people in command, not how American bases are structured. By the way, there are bases in every state, some in not as nice places as this. But they still have amenities.

The article does not say that Petraeus and his generals held wild parties every night.
Bringing in a reference to the fictional TV program creates the impression that there are wild parties every night at MacDill. This is a case of very bad writing skills and the failure of readers to find their way through the slop.

Best to not rush judgement about this. Let the news about MacDill social activities and what generals were doing what emerge.
All of it, including the warts, whatever the fact prove to be. I sure can´t know. Few of us can.
The DM at least will report inconvenient stories. It is mad about royals, fawns over some celebrities, and adores their clothes but once you get past that it has some good, and I believe, usually fair coverage.

Totally BS article. The photos show base housing not atypical of any other installation. Upscale gym? Found on every base worldwide (some have more than one!) and the equipment is purchased with Non-Appropriated Funds (i.e., NOT tax dollars). Boat rentals? SCUBA lessons? Ditto, for any base located on the water. Here´s a dirty little secret you can investigate, Snejana: Air Force bases in the Rockies rent SKIING equipment to the troops.
Sorry, but McDill AFB is NOT Randy Cunningham´s Dukestir.

Our military is as much a mess as every other part of the US. We aren´t fighting any wars, just doing diversity training, forcing men to wear fake bellies and attend classes to learn how pregnant women feel. The back of Jill Kelley´s house was piled high with garbage, the driveway in back cracked and overgrown with weeds. She and her husband are the subject of several lawsuits, are essentially bankrupt and a few million in debt. Ms. Kelley is obviously not mentally competent. If you´re broke, you get a job that pays something so you can pay your debts. Our military is spending time with mental cases and elevated one, Ms. Kelley, to honorary consul of South Korea.

Hundreds took to the streets as macabre ‘Thatcher death parties’ were held late into the night across the country, organised by critics of the ´Iron Lady.´ Smashed shop windows, paint bombs and police being attacked were all consequences of the Left´s sick ´celebration´ of Baroness Thatcher´s death. In Brixton, south London, riot police were deployed as the crowds, which had been drinking since 5pm, started to become more aggressive smashing shop fronts and throwing paint bomb. In Liverpool, flares and fireworks were set off outside Lime Street Station by revellers, while in Bristol, seven police officers were injured--one seriously--as violence

Cometh the hour cometh the man. (Or woman). Except it´s not always true, is it? In 1940 we had Winston Churchill. In 1979 we had Margaret Thatcher. But I´m not sure even the most generous apologists for our current Prime Minister would bracket David Cameron in quite the same category. [Snip] One of the key differences between the two lies in their attitude to personal popularity. To the politician it matters greatly, for the primary aim of the politician is to gain and maintain power at regardless of what cost to his principles. To the statesman, however, the political process

Republican congressional candidate Mark Sanford slammed the 2009 federal stimulus package that went to Clemson University’s wind turbine effort--where Democrat rival Elizabeth Colbert Busch is employed--as bad public policy and a poor return on the taxpayers’ investments. By Sanford’s math and reading of Obama administration stimulus allocation figures, the Wind Turbine Drivetrain Testing Facility received $43 million and “created or saved” an estimated 134 jobs. When divided, the numbers calculate to more than $320,000 per job, Sanford said. Sanford’s comments came during a visit to a Mount Pleasant branch of Lyerly’s Cleaners, where he carried in a load

A coral reef in Northern Australia severely damaged by warming seas has managed to completely heal itself in just 12 years, stunned researchers have found. The team found that being left alone to breed on its own was key. The discovery raises hope that other damaged reefs could ´regenerate´. The new research shows that an isolated reef off the northwest coast of Australia that was severely damaged by a period of warming in 1998. It was hit by coral bleaching, caused by higher water temperatures that break down the coral´s symbiotic relationship with algae that provide food for coral growth.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.
