"American Chopper" is ending after 10 years. According to a report Friday by James Hibberd of Entertainment Weekly, "Chopper´s run will conclude with the previously announced four-way bike build-off special titled The Revenge," which airs live Dec. 11 on Discovery. The show chronicles the real-life custom motorcycle business Orange County Choppers, fronted by Montgomery resident Paul Teutul Sr. and headquartered in Newburgh. Between being on Discovery and TLC, "American Chopper" looked at the Teutul family´s rise to the top of the custom bike industry, while shedding light on family in-fighting that led to a split

About eight years beyond its expiration date. The dramatic formula got old, the show commercialized with product placements, bit players went into their own biz, and the bloom left the custom bike rose just as the recession hit. Good luck, gang.

Good.

The best observation about this ´reality´ TV show was in a review and it was thisparaphrased):

´What´s up with all the false deadlines? These guys build custom motorcycles for a living and KNOW how long it takes. The constant alarms of ´We´re GONNA MISS THE DEADLINE AND OUR LIVES AND BUSINESS WILL BE RUINED!!!´ is nonsense´.

I never watched it regularly but after reading that I stopped altogether because the writer was correct: the show was nothing but viewer manipulation and faked drama.

As for the retarded son ´Mikie´ I hope they paid him a ton of money to act like he was missing 3 or 4 chromasomes.

More to offer than the kardashians, but just another scripted reality show that got stale after watchiing 3 or 4 episodes.

Paul, Sr. was a drug addict, as was son Mikey. Paul Sr. divorced his wife, and married his therapist. How about that?
The family also was well lawyered up, and managed to bankrupt some properties.

I watched a few episodes, until I figured out that even with my lack of mechanical skills, I could have assembled those cookie cutter bikes with fancy paint.

Next off, Pawn Stars.

I have every episode recorded and saved and will miss the show. The AirForce bike, the 9/11 bike, the Fireman bike, the Anti-Venom, the Web bike, Vinnie´s bike.....many fond memories of bikes and deadlines. No need to say bad things about people you never met or bikes you couldnt possibly build...I wish them all luck in their future. It was a long and enjoyable run, thanks for years of entertainment and being human. The only regret I have is that the Marxist Dictator Liar and his demented idiot partner got re-elected! How did THAT happen? I dont think bikers like me OR the Teutels are responsible for THAT!

OC Choppers is just another show featuring dysfunctional families and ranks right down there with Hardcore Pawn.

Are these shows popular because our society is producing too many real life dysfunctional families?

With state of the art tools and some excellent fabricators, they built some impressive stuff. They also built junk. I´ll confess to liking to watch other people work so there´s that.

Family dysfunction aside -- hard to ignore -- the one thing Sr. and Jr. both inevitably lacked, love of bikes. Motorcycles seemed like just means to an end.

Thank the heavens for the millions of relatively healthy families who never get their own series.
Most reality TV shows are populated with grasping brutes whose intelligence is as limited as their vocabulary — not that there´s anything wrong with that.

Then this soap opera came along...

Paul Teutul Sr. will one day have a stroke in mid rant.

I hate those shows that have fights all the time and fire people weekly. Be it guys in the swamp or in Alaska driving trucks or digging for gold or loggers or drilling for oil.

The only one that didn´t get on my nerves is Swamp Loggers. The owner doesn´t yell and berate people. Of course it was canceled...

We must be warped because we watched the show as a family when our sons still lived at home. My younger son even built his own chopper from a kit when he was 18. Yes, we knew they were messed up, but we still enjoyed the personalities, especially Sr´s mother and the Yankees bike. We also like Pawn Stars. Go figure. Rick is a good conservative who is a fan of Mark Levin, btw.

This all started with a Cable TV documentary on West Coast Chopper´s owner/builder Jesse James. Then these opportunists jumped into the spotlight. OCC built a "theme-bike" for almost every imaginable entity, in fact, I´m surprised we never saw one for Duncan Donuts, or Victoria´s Secret. It was ridiculous there was ever even a buyer for these off-the-shelf, slapped together, ugly pieces of junk.
The real artisan chopper-builders are mostly unknowns who show up on other shows.

#22, that was Boyd Coddington who checked out. He had heart stoppage written into his personality. I think the last time I saw the show was when he tried to sell a stupid looking blue and yellow roadster at the Barret-Jackson auction and got a dime for every dollar he invested in it. That being said, I agree with #24. How tough is it to design a bike based on an already recognized logo/business? What I also wonder is why any business would want to build a bike to advertise itself? Maybe Hostess should have a Bankrupt Bike with cupcake rims and a fruit pie gas tank covered with union leeches...yeh, that´s the ticket!

SAN FRANCISCO — California lawmakers are considering taking some tax exemptions away from youth groups that do not accept gay, transgender or atheist members — a move intended to pressure the Boy Scouts of America to lift its ban on gay Scouts and troop leaders. Some cities have withdrawn free rent and other subsidies from the Boy Scouts over the years, but legislation introduced by state Sen. Ricardo Lara would make California the first state to target the Scouts for its anti-gay policy. The Long Beach Democrat´s bill, SB 323, is scheduled for its first committee hearing on Wednesday.

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.
