One of life’s wonders gone

The tragic demise of one of America’s favorite snacks, the Twinkie, plunged the Twitterverse and blogosphere into mourning yesterday — even as throngs of local shoppers made desperate runs for the last packs of the golden, spongy, cream-filled cakes. The legendary 80-year-old Hostess favorite, along with the Sno Ball, the Ding Dong and Ho-Hos, came to an end yesterday after the Texas company filed for bankruptcy. Manifestations of the ensuing distress ranged from solemn digital images of the yummy treat with the slogan “Never Forget. 11/16/12,” to dozens of boxes of Twinkies being auctioned off on eBay,

There´s no shortage of people already missing a particular snack food these days. It´s hard to fathom, then, why the sales volume was so low as to turn the company into bankruptcy... some 8 years ago, in fact.

I read the article. I guess they forgot to mention the 18,000 jobs also now gone. The Twinkie product can be bought and resurrected; hope we can say the same for the 18,000 jobs lost.

Lessons learned:

Unions think they succeed when they, ...DESTROY companies & the jobs they provide.

Unions are apparently so drunk with power they don´t even relax their dictates in order to help those suffering during natural disasters.

Unions have made the rust belt exactly what it is today.

Unions are but one of the dems´ ´special interest,´ tools.

socialism fails every time it is tried

FTA: Ashley Fisher, 27, of Weymouth... “It’s like our childhood is ending. It’s a huge part of our culture.”

I´ve got news for Ms. Fisher, it shouldn´t take the closing of Hostess and the loss of Twinkies to tell you your childhood is ending. I wonder who Ms. Fisher voter for?

Hey, my grandmother, with whom I lived during WWII, before I was old enough to go to school, would buy me a Twinkie every now and then. It was soooo special to eat one. Unfortunately, the food Nazis ruined my enjoyment of Twinkies about 30 years ago.

Back in those times, people Ms. Fisher´s current age (both men and women) had left their childhood behind in their early 20´s or younger when a merciless Premier Tojo in Japan decided to bomb Pearl Harbor in 1941, and a monster dictator in Germany decided to invade and overrun countries in Europe and Asia.

Instead of bemoaning the loss of a food, how about some compassion for the 18,500 people who are now out of work, thanks to a very stupid union. I read on another article that some in the Teamster´s Union crossed the picket lines to help keep Hostess going because they had seen the books and recognized the bad financial problem.

The company that buys the Twinkie brand name will make a fortune. They won´t need to advertise, the media hype will be overwhelming. When the product is re-introduced you´ll see lines around the block, people will camp out.

Hostess has thousands of competitors, and in a competitive market products come and go. That might be disturbing considering the pleasant experiences the company gave us when we were young gourmands, but how many snack companies do you suppose Hostess drove out of business? That´s called evolution and without it, we wouldn´t be here.

The Congressional investigation into whether the Internal Revenue Service targeted conservative groups for persecution ended today on a controversial note after former official Lois Lerner refused to answer questions. The rough day for the investigation followed the release of emails corroborating political targeting of groups. The emails, obtained by the House´s investigative committee, indicated that Lerner, in her official capacity, aimed to target political groups out of concern that the Citizens United ruling would lead to more suspicious or inappropriate tax filings. The ruling repealed much of the 2002 Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act and allowed individuals and political groups to

President Obama held an hour-long phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin Thursday afternoon to discuss the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. Obama emphasized to Putin that Russia’s military incursion into Ukraine´s Crimean peninsula violated the country´s sovereignty, "which has led us to take several steps in response, in coordination with our European partners," Obama said in a White House statement. Obama also outlined a diplomatic solution to the ongoing unrest, which would include direct talks between the Ukraine and Russia governments, ensuring Russian forces return to their bases and installing international monitors to protect the rights of all Ukrainians.
