| BIDDEFORD, Maine — Labor leaders in Maine say the resilience of the Hostess workers on the picket line at the company’s Biddeford plant, which is in the process of being shut down after the company on Friday said it would liquidate the business, gives them inspiration in the face of what they believe have been ongoing efforts — by politicians, including Gov. Paul LePage, and corporate investors — to reduce union influence. Bakers’ union officials and their supporters say also that the demise

From reading another site, it seems that the true objective is for the state to take ownership, as in the former Soviet Union.

This does not increase my support for unions one whit. In fact, I find this point of view to be vicious and pathetic at the same time.
The business units will be sold in whole or piecemeal and will be resurrected as a new company, probably without union representation.
If union workers worked as hard as they whined for pay and benefits, all would be well. So often, union workers use the union to do as little work as possible for as much compensation as possible.
The hell with them. Many of us will vote against their extortions at every opportunity.

Unions: Proud to be the catalyst of a beggar nation.
Unions used to be concerned with the progress of the host company. Now their aim is collapse the host company.
What´s next - Fascism?

And finally - blame it on managment and Romney.

These unionistas are stuck on stupid. They voted for 0boohoo and now they can get in his unemployment lines. They have proven only that they can shoot themselves in the head. Big accomplishment, not.
#2 Wonder is privately held = no SEC/government involvement. They have determined to sell off all of their assets, so state involvement will not happen. Other bloggers, elsewhere, are talking about an employee owned Wonder. That will not happen either. The employees did not cooperate with the company, and the company will not cooperate with the employees.

The jobless workers expect to be paid by the union because they are owed for destroying their employer. Good luck there folks your union benefits will run out quickly when no dues are pouring into the coffer. Some really must have thought the company didn´t dare shut down because the Union told them it couldn´t..

I was going to agree and question how people could throw their jobs and their very company away.
Oh, and then I realized, 1/2 this country wants to throw their country away. My bad.
You know who I feel sorry for? The small percentage of non-union conservatives that worked for that company, that just wanted to go to work and support their families.
The rest of you? I agree with the writer above. You can go to hell. You are everything wrong with the country, from your vote, your jobs, and your belief system. Have fun shopping at the Dollar Tree for your Christmas gifts this year, may your child be safe from the lead poisoning in that junk. May they be taken away by CPS because your house is freezing with no heat. They might have a chance with someone else.
Go freeze to death. You can always dream about the Obamas and the fine fare they eat. Oh, just remember, if you really get hungry you can swallow a handful of free birth control pills, I hear they contain a small amount of sucrose.
Don´t eat the yellow snow.

As an ex Maine-er I can testify that they are difficult to teach.
They should have learned the dangers of unions after the disastrous results of the shoe business and the Bates Mills in Lewiston who moved lock stock and barrel to southern states leaving Saco and Lewiston without their largest industries and making Maine a welfare state whose biggest export is young people who can´t find work.
I loved that state. What´s been done to it is shameful!

If Twinkies become collector´s items, you could still eat one 20 years from now if your un short on food.
The reason these people are forced to lose their jobs is they don´t want a domino effect in other industries.A private company can´t loot the taxpayers unless of course you´re part of the UAW. Unfortunately,a lot of non union folks are going to lose their job due to Obamacare.
This really isn´t any different than unions blocking walmarts from opening, even though they would give shoppers more choices and cheaper prices and give poor people jobs.

Atlas shrugged. Ayn Rand´s prophecies have come true. The union nazis and their Obama sympathizers can all go to hell. I could care less how many people lost their jobs over this. The trademarks, intellectual property, recipes, and brands will be sold to a new firm that will organize without union influence. The country will be better off in the long run. I absolutely despise and hate unions with a passion I normally reserve for al Qaeda and the Democrat party (i.e. - the Voter Fraud, Welfare Cheat, and Obamaphone Party).

And now, check the ingredients on those packages. They don´t even resemble the Twinkies of my childhood.
I did like the Devils food cupcakes and Snowballs. But I have no idea what they taste like now.
If the company sells its name and recipes will the new buyer use the actual ingredients that they used in the earlier part of the last century?
The products might actually have some taste again besides just sweet.

My husband´s cousin worked for Eastern Airlines and when it was on the verge of bankruptcy, the employees went on strike. I asked him how he could go on strike knowing that the strike could cause the airline to shut down and how does a man with two small children to support go out on strike. He couldn´t give me a good answer and by the time he decided to cross the picket line, the airline went under. He had to work two jobs after that and his wife had to go to work plus they got help from her father. And I had no sympathy for him at all.

I view unions as a necessary evil, especially in the skilled trades which we no longer teach in school in an effective manner. My objection to unions, is that like Major League Baseball, they are exempt from the Sherman Anti-trust Act.
A union is a business enterprise. It´s business is selling labor. The service that the union provides is screening, training and delivery of qualified workers. There should be no right to operate as a sole source of labor, ergo another union should be allowed to form and compete for contracts.
Bottom line in this mess is that the union thinks that they won, while their members will eventually discover that they lost.

This comes straight from afl/cio bully boys. And, as I commented before, the workers at the ohio plant would rather collect unemployment than work.

Democratic Party officials believe that Kevin Strouse is exactly the kind of candidate who can help them retake the House next year. He’s a smart, young former Army Ranger — good qualities for any aspiring politician. But what party leaders really like is that Strouse doesn’t have particularly strong views on the country’s hottest issues. Immigration? Tax policy? “Certainly I have a lot of research to do,” Strouse acknowledged in an interview Thursday as he announced his candidacy in a suburban Philadelphia House district. Strouse’s candidacy reflects an emerging

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Carbon emissions in the US were at their lowest level in 2012 since 1994, according to figures released by the US Energy Information Administration. We did it without carbon trading scams, the EPA making carbon dioxide a poison, or obeying the dictates of the Kyoto climate Treaty. We did it partly because of decreased economic activity as a result of the Obama recovery-that-isn’t, but mostly because of good old fashioned market forces; competition between natural gas and coal: Energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2012 were the lowest in the United States since 1994

When I tell campus horror-stories like “What’s the Matter With Vassar?” people ask if parents know what’s going on at these schools. I don’t think they want to know. But guess what happens when protesters step on others’ rights in full view of parents? Tufts has one of the most active campus fossil-fuel divestment groups. Lately these protesters have been infiltrating orientation sessions and campus tours for prospective students, mostly high school juniors traveling with their parents. Climate protesters interrupt these recruitment activities with questions

It is amazing just how wrong economists were in their predictions for the number of jobs that were to be created in March. The “consensus” figure was 200,000 — a far cry from the actual number created which was 88,000. Totally “unexpected,” as usual. In one way, you can’t blame them. After a better than average gain in February of 236,000 (revised upward this month to 268,000), along with some positive numbers in housing and consumer spending, there were no doubt many analysts who began breathing a sigh of relief and believing that the long-awaited jobs recovery was upon us.

Rich Lowery in the New York Post (4-02-2013) accuses the liberals of being the new climate deniers, considering that they don´t recognize that there´s been no global warming for the last fifteen years. This shouldn´t surprise Lowery. When the liberals hang onto the neck of a cause, they don´t let go. They have ignored murders, rapes, wars, nuclear proliferation, and everything wrong with the world to focus in on their little area -- the horror of carbon emissions. You´d think liberals would have learned from their earlier panic about overpopulation

“President Obama plans to give up 5 percent of his salary this year to draw attention to the financial sacrifice of more than 1 million federal employees who will be furloughed.” — The Washington Post, April 4 “Here’s the plan. We get the warhead and we hold the world ransom for 1 MILLION DOLLARS !” — Dr. Evil in “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” At the annual White House Easter Egg Roll this week, President Obama decided to shoot some hoops with the kids. He wound up going 2 for 22. The abysmal field-goal percentage — 9 percent

We know Johns Hopkins University is devoted to diversity, because it says so. Its “Diversity and Inclusion Statement,” a classic of the genre, says the university is “committed to sharing values of diversity and inclusion .?.?. by recruiting and retaining a diverse group of students.” Hopkins has an Office of Institutional Equity and a “Diversity Leadership Council” that defines “inclusion” as “active, thoughtful and ongoing engagement with each other.” Unless you are a member of Voice for Life (VFL), an antiabortion group. Hopkins’s Student Government Association has denied VFL status

President Obama will propose a budget next week that embraces a risky strategy of courting Republicans for a grand bargain on the debt while angering Democratic allies with cuts to the nation’s entitlement programs. White House officials said Friday that Obama’s budget would cut Medicare and Social Security and ask for less tax revenue than he has previously sought. The budget, to be released Wednesday, will fully incorporate the offer Obama made to House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) during December’s “fiscal cliff” talks — which included $1.8 trillion in deficit reduction through spending cuts and tax increases.

Sen Mark Begich declared a “sea change” in the politics of gun control immediately after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., telling his local newspaper that he would not hesitate to buck the powerful National Rifle Association. But in the months since, the gun rights group has made itself impossible for the Alaska Democrat, and many other lawmakers, to resist. Begich has signed on as a co-sponsor of a bill, drafted in consultation with the NRA, that would change the way mental illness is reported in the background check system — a measure that critics say

RUSH: Folks, I don´t know how else to categorize this. We are living in a dying country. I don´t know how else to categorize what´s happening -- 88,000 new jobs. The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

No one is more preoccupied these days with Hillary Clinton´s 2016 plans than the Beltway political class—not even the former presidential candidate herself. To hear some tell it, her decision will be dispositive for all other Democrats thinking of entering the race. And pundits and reporters aren´t the only ones positing the "The Hillary Factor": No less than the House Democratic whip, Steny Hoyer, told BuzzFeed, “I don´t know that anybody would run against Hillary…. If she runs, she clears the field.” It´s an understandable conclusion, given Clinton´s stature in the Democratic Party and her 70 percent

I hope all will look at a lifetime of service over some poorly chosen words.” Carson will remain as commencement speaker at Johns Hopkins,

Michelle Obama has admitted that she is already tired of the bangs she first sported in January. The First Lady said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: ´Bangs are a day-by-day proposition. They´re starting to grow out, get a little irritating.´ Still, she hasn´t let her hairdo woes get her down. ´It´s okay,´ she said after her initial complaint. ´We´ll be good.´ The first indication that her hairstyle was becoming a burden came about last weekend, when Malia, 14, was spotted adjusting her mother´s hair during the White House Easter Egg Roll.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton explained to the Women in the World summit in New York today that the clock is turning back for women in America. Clinton praised her own mother for helping empower her to success and marveled at the opportunities that her own daughter Chelsea has pursued. But Clinton warned that there is still so much to do to promote women´s rights in America. "As I look at all these young women that I am privileged to work with, or know through Chelsea, and its hard to imagine turning the clock on them," Clinton said.

The Obama White House is scrambling to blame Friday’s abysmal March jobs numbers on the sequester’s trimming of the rate of growth in federal budgets that have yet to fully commence. After the Labor Department announced that a mass exodus of 663,000 workers left the U.S. workforce last month and that job creation fell 112,000 jobs short of projections, Obama’s top economic adviser Alan B. Krueger, took to the White House blog to blame the sequester: It is important to bear in mind that the March household and payroll surveys are the first monthly surveys to look

Get ready for the last straw. First, though, I´d like to suggest that anyone reading this column in a local newspaper or news site pat the editor on the back for publishing what in our neo-medieval world of fear amounts to a forbidden column. Yup, I am about to say something about the Great Barack Obama Identity/Eligibility Scandal again. I know that this is one rich and urgent topic that doesn´t see the light of day in certain so-called news outlets -- and I say that from the experience of watching my own syndicated columns

SANFORD - Trayvon Martin´s parents have settled a wrongful death claim for an amount believed to be more than $1 million against the homeowners association of the Sanford subdivision where their teenage son was killed. Their attorney, Benjamin Crump, filed that paperwork at the Seminole County Courthouse, a portion of which was made public today. In the five pages of the settlement that were available for public review, the settlement amount had been marked out. Lower in the agreement, the parties specified that they would keep that amount confidential. When asked during an earlier interview whether the amount was

The budget President Barack Obama will submit on April 10 will contain a proposal that would prohibit individuals from accumulating more than $3 million in Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and tax-preferred retirement accounts. According to a White House statement, the Obama administration believes the current rules allow some wealthy individuals "to accumulate many millions of dollars in these accounts, substantially more than is needed to fund reasonable levels of retirement saving." "The budget would limit an individual’s total balance across tax-preferred accounts to an amount sufficient to finance an annuity of not more than $205,000 per
