ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, N.J. –Love letters from World War II written by a New Jersey woman to her boyfriend washed ashore during Superstorm Sandy. A 14-year-old found the 57 letters inside a box walking along a beach in Atlantic Highlands the day after Sandy struck. They chronicled life for Dorothy Fallon and Lynn Farnham from 1942 until the week before they married in 1948. The Vermont native served in the Pacific during the war. Kathleen Chaney tells WNBC-TV in New York (http://bit.ly/RDSPJq ) she started playing amateur detective as her son dried the letters.

Not a tiny handful. Not even an imagined majority. No, every last person who says they´ve been harmed by Obamacare is lying, according to the Majority Leader of the United States Senate: (Video) He specifically cites the story of a woman we wrote about earlier in the week, whose story...hasn´t been debunked. You´ll recall that Rep. Gary Peters, Michigan Democrats´ presumptive Senate nominee, had his lawyers pressure television stations to refuse to air an anti-Obamacare ad starring a cancer patient who´s been hurt by the new law. Julie Boonstra has since explained her situation in some detail and would like

Space travel has been very good for Sandra Bullock. The 49-year-old actress looks set to earn her biggest paycheck to date for Gravity, with studio sources saying she will make at least $70 million when all revenue streams are factored in. According to multiple sources, Bullock´s deal with Warner Bros. for the Alfonso Cuaron-directed space epic calls for her to earn $20 million upfront against 15 percent of first-dollar gross. That means once her advance is covered, she will collect 15 percent of the studio´s slice of the box-office pie, known as "film rentals." Each studio negotiates individual deals with

AUSTIN, Texas — A federal judge has struck down Texas’ ban on gay marriage, but is leaving it in place pending a ruling by an appeals court later this year. Judge Orlando Garcia issued a preliminary injunction on the ban Wednesday, then suspended his ruling. Two gay couples had challenged the state’s constitutional amendment and a longstanding law banning gay marriage.Under federal court rules, a judge may suspend a law if he or she believes the plaintiffs have a strong case and will suffer if the law is enforced. Garcia said his injunction against Texas enforcing its ban will take effect

On Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden blamed “hatred” as the motivating force behind voter identification laws in states such as North Carolina, Alabama, and Texas. Biden wants new laws to block “former slave holding states in the south” from discrimination against blacks and other minorities. Biden, speaking at a reception at the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., in celebration of African-American History Month, said that, "These guys never go away. Hatred never, never goes away. The zealotry of those who wish to limit the franchise cannot be smothered by reason." Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee (I) would take issue with

Can Obamacare Avoid a Consumer Rebellion?

When Obamacare handed insurance companies millions of compulsory customers, it also handed them a reminder of one of their industry´s toughest realities: Consumers want low premiums, and they want to see any doctor they want. And it´s impossible to give them both. Generally, insurers selling plans on Obamacare´s exchanges opted to keep premiums low, hoping the public would prefer a low upfront price tag—even if that meant customers couldn´t always pick their first-choice doctor. But "if you like your doctor, you can hope she´s in our network" was always going to be a tough sell for insurers. With the insurance

The attorney for Lois Lerner blasted the House GOP for recalling the former IRS official to testify next week, saying it would only serve to embarrass her and could increase threats against Lerner and her family. Bill Taylor, Lerner’s attorney, told House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) that he told committee staff in January that Lerner would continue to invoke her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination if recalled, and that she would "happily testify" if given immunity. Taylor, of Zuckerman Spaeder, said he heard nothing further from the committee until Issa wrote to him on Tuesday, saying he was hauling Lerner

You probably have an opinion about the Arizona legislature´s controversial new bill, SB 1062, awaiting signature or veto by Gov. Jan Brewer. You may have complained that it reinstates "Jim Crow" by allowing businesses to refuse to serve gays. You may have defended it as a necessary response to the courts´ encroachments on the freedom of religion, where people have been sued for refusing to bake cakes or take pictures at gay weddings. But have you actually read the bill itself? (Make sure you´ve read the right version: the original text was later amended.) It´s shorter than most of the

Hawaii already had one of the highest insured rates in the nation as the result of a 40-year-old state law requiring employers to provide coverage. The state received more than $205 million in federal money to build a health insurance exchange to serve those still uninsured. LOS ANGELES— A Northern California couple out walking their dog on their property stumbled across a modern-day bonanza: $10 million in rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree. Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, said David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated them. Although the face value of the gold pieces only adds up to about $27,000, some of them are so rare that coin experts say they could fetch nearly $1 million apiece. "I don´t like to

It has the makings of a royal mess for “King Barack.” Monday morning’s Supreme Court argument about the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases went badly for the Obama administration — so much so that the real question before the justices seemed to be how severe the EPA’s loss would be. The administration’s solicitor general, Donald Verrilli, pleaded with the justices to recognize the “urgent problem” of climate change, because the “threat to future generations gets worse” with each passing year. But as the argument played out, the court’s swing justice, Anthony Kennedy, made clear that he
