Yes, in isolated cases a misdiagnosis MAY result in the death of a mother ( oops, guess they are not a mother unless she actually wants the "baby", oops , guess its not a baby unless the "mother" wants the "baby"). As opposed to the FACT that a living fetus will be snuffed millions of times if laws are liberalized.

After reading posts #1 and #3, I am firmly convinced that this website is now frequented with racists and bigots. It used to be great website for thoughtful discussion. Anymore, any article that does not involve non-white prostestant males is automatically derided and suspect. I´d say it´s more a cautionary tale of the evils of socialized medicine. In the U.S., at least for now, she could have went to a different hospital, doctor, city, etc. and found someone willing to take her symptoms seriously.

According to the article, the Irish supreme court had ruled 20 years ago that abortions to save the life of the mother were legal. Something else seems to be going on.

That´s OK. Despite being a White Protestant intolerant racist bigot, I did not cease and desist from dating the woman who is now my wife when she revealed to me that she had once had an abortion.

Hindu scriptures clearly say that taking a life where there is no other recourse is an act of non-violence. And flinching in the face of such duty sin. This is entirely a tragic affair. Unfortunately it will become more tragic as it gets used as an excuse to kill more healthy babies.

This is classic "progressive" strategy: work up faux outrage over one unfortunate case (e.g., pregnant woman dies of freak medical condition, daughter raped by a relative, etc.) to justify a million abortions per year.

There is nothing in this story that explains why this Indian woman wanted an abortion, why she miscarried, why she got septicemia afterwards, or why an abortion would have prevented her death. Do these protesters demonstrate every time a woman dies after getting a botched abortion in a Planned Parenthood clinic?

By definition a miscariage is a dead fetus...normal pregnancy does not cause sepsis...she apparently just needed a D & C to evacuate the nonliving tissue...this was a case of malpractice, not denying abortion that would have saved a life

Septicema is the cause of death 7 days later. This is a case of medical malpractice. Septicima is usually easily treated with antibiotics.

It seems they should be protesting shoddy medical practice, not abortion policy.

A read of the article will reveal that the law says she could have had the abortion to save her life but there is still something in the constitution that says no. The two were never reconciled and the doctors are left in limbo.

The protests in Ireland are against the government, the bureaucracy that could allow this to happen again.

If there was still a fetal heartbeat, then there was no miscarriage, at least not yet. The medical term would be "threatened AB" which indicates that a miscarriage is imminent or likely. There is also the medical term "missed AB" which means the fetus is dead but has not passed out of the mother´s body through the birth canal and perhaps a D&C needs to be performed to remove it and stop the bleeding. A miscarriage is called a "spontaneous AB" which means the pregnancy has ended unexpectedly and disastrously, but that no tissue has been retained in the uterus.

Without having more details about what actually happened in this instance, it is inflammatory and pointless to speculate. If there was still a fetal heartbeat, and the woman had septicemia as well, the question is, what in hell had gone on so that she ended up with speticemia? Had she tried to end the pregnancy herself? Did a back-street abortionist get his hands on her? Again, pointless to speculate without knowing more facts.

Though not a doctor, I was puzzled by the septicema 7 days after a miscarriage. Why did she not go to the doctor immediately after the miscarriage?
