Idaho inmates claim gangs
run prison

Associated Press, by Rebecca Boone

Original Article

Posted By:BaseballFan, 11/13/2012 3:05:16 PM

BOISE, Idaho — A gang war that appears to have taken over parts of an Idaho private prison is spilling into the federal courts, with some inmates contending prison officials are ceding control to gang leaders in an effort to save money on staffing. (Snip) The inmates also contend that CCA officials use gang violence and the threat of gang violence as an "inexpensive device to gain control over the inmate population," according to the lawsuit, and that housing gang members together allows the company to use fewer guards, reducing payroll costs.

Comments:
So, the inmates really ARE running the asylum. /s off/

CBS dubs sound for quiet electric car

NEW YORK- CBS News says an editor made an "audio error" in dubbing the sound of a loud traditional car engine over footage of the much quieter Tesla electric car in a story that aired Sunday. Spokesman Kevin Tedesco said Tuesday that the loud car audio has been edited out of the online version of the story on Tesla founder Elon Musk. Anchor Scott Pelley reported the story, and CBS said he wasn´t aware of the added audio ahead of time. The revving sound, as opposed to the much quieter windlike noise of a Tesla, was noticed by the auto enthusiast website

AMMAN- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry broke from a visit to Italy on Wednesday to try to salvage Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, even as Arab leaders declared they would never meet Israel´s core demand to be recognized as a Jewish state. Kerry flew to Jordan to ask Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to commit to extending the negotiations, just days before Israel is supposed to release a final group of Palestinian prisoners as a confidence-building gesture. Before it releases the prisoners, Israel wants to be assured Abbas won´t abandon the U.S.-brokered talks, which resumed last July after a three-year break. Having initially

Busy week awaits NFL owners at

As further proof the NFL never is far from the headlines, owners could make plenty of news this week at their spring meetings. They will consider 13 playing rules proposals and seven bylaws. They will discuss expanding the playoff field from 12 to 14 teams, although a vote on such a move is uncertain. Some changes would seem to be slam dunks: extending the height of the goal posts 5 feet to help determine if kicks are good; eliminating overtime in preseason games; placing fixed TV cameras on the goal lines, end lines and sidelines to help with replay reviews.

Early signs of spring may not be good

Warm temperatures, colorful wildflowers. What´s not to like, about early signs of spring? Climate scientists at NASA say these early signs could be tied to global warming, and the consequences are troubling. 9NEWS talked to NASA scientist Dr. Compton Tucker at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. He said that on average, the last frost of the year is happening about five days earlier than it did just five decades ago. Tucker said his conclusions are drawn from a fleet of Earth-observing satellites that have been monitoring our planet for more than 40 years. That satellite data combined with

Rising food prices bite into household budgets

Prices are rising for a range of food staples, from meat and pork to fruits and vegetables, squeezing consumers still struggling with modest wage gains. Food prices rose 0.4% in February, the most since September 2011, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Tuesday. Beef and veal shoppers were socked with some of the biggest increases, as prices jumped 4% from January. Overall inflation remained tame, as falling gasoline and other energy costs offset the food price increases. The consumer price index ticked up just 0.1% from January and 1.1% in the past year.

An Internal Revenue Service employee took home personal information on about 20,000 IRS workers, former workers and contractors, putting the data at risk for public release, the agency said Tuesday. The employee took home a computer thumb drive containing names, Social Security numbers and addresses of the workers, and plugged the drive into an unsecure home network, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said in an email to employees. "At this point, we have no direct evidence to indicate this personal information has been used for identity theft or other inappropriate uses," the IRS said in a statement. “The Farmer will never be happy again; He carries his heart in his boots; For either the rain is destroying his grain Or the drought is destroying his roots.” AP Herbert, English satirist, novelist, law reform activist and independent member of parliament for Oxford university, has been mostly right ever since he penned the verse in 1922. Farmers perennially moan about the miseries of agriculture. Dairy farmers have been among the most vociferous. Not recently, though. Are cognac drinkers troublemakers? That would seem to be the premise behind a Portland bar’s ban on two kinds of cognac – Hennessy and Rémy Martin – as the owners try to convince city officials that they are making the place safer. In a letter to the police department, a lawyer for Sangillo’s Tavern said “the purchase of these liquors was related to detrimental conduct.” Hennessy cognac is heavily marketed to young black drinkers, raising questions about whether the ban has racial overtones. Hennessy has been mentioned in more than a dozen rap and hip-hop songs, and was called “Black

Ohr rejected the longstanding view of Northwestern and the National Collegiate Athletic Association that players are "student-athletes" rather than employees. They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease. Monday is (sort of) the deadline for Americans without employer-provided health coverage to sign up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act — the White House extended it so that anyone who’s begun to sign up by Monday can still complete the process by April 7 — and the final enrollment numbers will be an important test for a law intended to expand access for the uninsured.
