Jeff Gordon fined $100,000,
docked 25 points for wrecking
Clint Bowyer at Phoenix

Yahoo! Sports, by Jay Busbee

NASCAR pledged it wouldn´t render immediate judgment on Jeff Gordon for his role in wrecking Clint Bowyer and upending the end of Sunday´s Phoenix race. But officials didn´t wait much longer, handing down a decision on Monday evening: a fine of $100,000 and a 25-point penalty. It was not a surprising penalty, but it will certainly disappoint those who believed Gordon deserved suspension for his actions. Gordon not only ignored a black flag, he altered the championship battle by taking out one of the final contenders. However, unlike Kyle Busch, suspended last year for a similar incident

i am a long time jeff gordon fan and believe both he and bowyer should have been suspended for this last race. this is the last race of the season. give everybody a chance to cool off til february.

gordon deserves everything he gets but bowyer is not without any culpability here. it was his crew after all that ran over to gordon and mugged him, setting off the brawl

Cheap shot by Gordon on someone that had a (small) chance of winning the championship

Foolish juvenile behavior. Too bad Bowyer´s crew didn´t get to him...

He should have been banned from racing.

Good for Jeff, he´s taken enough crap from Bowyer! (Plus, it keeps NASCAR interesting!!)

Long time, huge Gordon fan but had to let him go when he spent most of his time in his miserable AARP sponsored car. That said, happy to see him and Bowyer not suspended for the last race. Don´t need replacement drivers in their cars in the title-deciding race.

Keselowski got my attention in the Nationwide Series, IMO he´s the most natural, instinctive NASCAR driver in a long time. Fifteenth or better at Homestead guarantees a championship for Bad Brad and the Captain Penske. Icing on the cake, no sixth for JJ this year and Gordon´s boss Hendrick.

NASCAR. WWE. Two peas in a pod.

Gordon already admitted the wreck was intentional and done for revenge, so there´s no doubt about that.

What´s sick is that NASCAR loves this kind of stuff, they know they get more people watching when they get more wrecks + drama. They´ll probably give both drivers a secret bonus under the table for pumping up the ratings this way.

Jeff Gordon always managed to make it to the whitehouse when Obozo became President but somehow never showed up when Bush was President. I guess Jeff Gordon likes Obama`s pro gay stance...

Gordon had a good car and was taken out of contention by Bowyer and not for the first time this year. He got what he deserved. Sorry about Logano who got caught up in the mess.

Who should be fined are the NASCAR officials who didn´t throw the caution immediately leaving Danica Patrick a sitting duck for the next driver who could avoid her broken car. (Thanks to Burton who slammed into her after entering the corner way too fast. He should be fined too for reckless driving.)

But it sure made it an interesting day!

#15, Kyle was suspended for purposely spinning out another driver like Gordon did.

With a history of trouble, Kurt was booted out of Penske Racing last year for shooting the finger at a vehicle carrying Michelle Obama. Yep.

Perils of moving to a no-tax state

NEW YORK - You might think that moving to a state with no income tax would greatly simplify your tax life. Not so fast. If you´re not careful, it could greatly complicate things and cost you tons in back taxes and penalties. For example, if you are still planning to spend significant time in your former state, you better limit it to less than 183 days. Why? Spending any more time there could mean you´ll be treated as a resident of that state and therefore have to pay tax. And it´s not just days spent in-state

NEW YORK -- At perhaps a bad time in U.S. employment, it seems there´s a "perception gap" between what workers think they´re worth on the job and how employers see them. Analysis by Bryant & Stratton College with help from Wakefield Research from a survey among U.S. adults age 18 to 34 found that 80% of workers believe they are "job ready and possess all the skills, experience and education needed to advance in their desired career path or obtain their next job." Yet 40% of U.S. employers say most entry-level job candidates lack even the basic skills needed

BERLIN/FRANKFURT - European car sales plunged last month to their lowest May level in two decades, eroding manufacturers´ hopes for a recovery this year after a rebound the month before. Figures on Tuesday from the Association of European Carmakers showed Germany, France and Italy, accounting for about half of the embattled region´s sales, suffered declines at or near double-digit percentage levels. Registrations across the 27-nation European Union dropped 5.9 percent to 1.04 million cars from 1.11 million a year ago, the lowest since May 1993 when sales fell below 1 million, the Association said.

Turkey warned on Monday it may bring in the army to help quell nearly three weeks of nationwide anti-government protests as two major union federations went on strike over police violence against demonstrators. The government raised the threat of putting soldiers on the streets after a weekend of violent clashes sparked by the eviction of campers occupying Istanbul´s Gezi Park, the epicentre of the protest movement. Police "will use all their powers" to end the unrest, deputy prime minister Bulent Arinc said in a televised interview. "If this is not enough, we can even utilise the Turkish armed forces

Obama on NSA programs: Americans

Americans outraged by leaked information about two top-secret government surveillance programs are "not getting the complete story," President Obama told Charlie Rose in a PBS interview recorded Sunday for air Monday night - and the intelligence community is working on filling in the holes. One "legitimate critique" of the National Security Agency programs designed to track suspected terrorists by culling U.S. phone records and mining data from the servers of major Internet companies, the president conceded, is that because they´re classified, "the public may not fully" understand them. "That can make the public kind of nervous, right?"

I fear the collateral damage the NSA´s spying via technology will do to that technology. The essential problem is not the internet or internet companies or even the spies. The real problem is the law and what it does not prevent the American government from doing with technology, and how it does not protect the principles upon which this nation was founded. The damage to the net and its freedoms will take many forms: users may come to distrust the net for communication, sharing, and storage because they now fear – with cause – that the government will be spying

A man was mauled by a bear near the Eklutna Lake Campground on Saturday after he threw barbecued meat at the animal, the Alaska State Troopers said Sunday. The man was at the lake, north of Anchorage, for a church picnic, said Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen. (Snip) The man threw a piece of meat at the bear, which ate it, she said. Then he offered another piece, she said. “That’s when it kind of went ballistic,” she said. The bear attacked the man, puncturing skin along his jaw and leaving him with scratches on his back, Ipsen said.

Fifty years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that school-sponsored Bible reading in public schools was unconstitutional. Prior to that decision, it was relatively common for children to begin the school day with a reading of Bible verses, though eleven states already had laws supporting Bible reading or prayer in schools overturned at the state level. Abington School District v. Schempp resulted in an 8-1 decision that overturned a Pennsylvania law that required the reading of “[a]t least ten verses from the Holy Bible” and a recitation of the Lord’s Prayer at the opening of each school day.

The town says the residents must prove an intent to discriminate, not just that the project has a disproportionate effect on racial minorities. The case will test a legal theory

Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.

It contains a passage on the back-and-forth between labor and the Chamber that has a quote from a Rubio staffer that is going to raise eyebrows, to say the least: “There are American workers who, for lack of a better term, can’t cut it. There shouldn’t be a presumption that every American worker is a star performer. There are people who just can’t get it, can’t do it, don’t want to do it. And so you can’t obviously discuss that publicly.” Here is the entire context:

It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. Washington - The Supreme Court says states cannot require would-be voters to prove they are U.S. citizens before using a federal registration system designed to make signing up easier. The justices voted 7-2 to throw out Arizona´s voter-approved requirement that prospective voters document their U.S. citizenship in order to use a registration form produced under the federal "Motor Voter" voter registration law.
