IRVING, Texas — Hostess Brands Inc. is permanently closing three bakeries following a nationwide strike by its bakers union. The Texas-based maker of Twinkies and Ding Dongs says the strike has prevented it from producing and delivering products. Hostess warned earlier this month that the strike, by about 30 percent of its workforce, could lead to bakery closures. It said Monday that it will close bakeries in Seattle, St. Louis and Cincinnati that collectively employ 627 workers. The company has about 18,300 employees. Most bakeries work under the Department of Agriculture, it´s a very hard job and dangerous as well.

The OSHA regs are already so complex and expensive you are now paying 2.50 a loaf for white bread that should cost .50, add in the unions and wah la the dough boy is out of work.

Bring these factories on down to the South where its right to work; Seattle, St. Louis, and Cincinnati are solid Obama territory so they don´t really need jobs anyway.

Just another example of the unions killing the golden goose. Good for Hostess standing for their principles...and their investors. Bad for the non-union folks on that payroll. Hopefully many will be willing/able to relocate and be worked into one of the surviving bakeries. Unions should--instead of spending millions of dollars on Democrat pols--- simply start their own companies, then run themselves out of business. If I was hiring for a company: Me: "Have you ever been a member of a union?" Applicant: "Yes." Me: "Next."

Many companies put their plans on hold a couple of years ago when it became unclear what return they could expect on any further investment. Last Tuesday evening the plans for investment in the United States died.
Companies are in no mode to take any stuff from anyone, especially union employees. The capitol they do have to invest will probably do better outside the US and it is now a question of do they shut down US facilities and sell or move the machinery to a new plant or just walk away. At least shutting down the US operation will stop the bleeding.

Many years ago a paper mill on Lincoln NH went on strike. The river into which they dumped their effluent was upgraded while they were on strike. The net effect was that they needed to treat their discharges, and they could not afford to do so. Plant closed, cleaner river, and union dues gone. What´s wrong with this picture?

This is why unions increasingly like gooberment unionization much more than private enterprise unionization... Gooberment has less ability and propensity to abrogate their contracts by going out of business or seeking bankruptcy relief.

One day a few weeks ago I got up and turned on Fox News and Mitt Romney was standing in front of a big yellow truck. I thought, I´ve seen that truck before. It was Marvin Wood and they have a plant in my small town that they struggle to keep open in these hard times. They are a family friendly company and have a "no lay-off" policy. They have had to cut hours to cut costs, but they keep up the employees´ health benefits. If they were union, I´m sure they would have closed the plant years ago.

If you watch "How its made" (awesome show, btw) you will notice that there´s an amazing amount of automation in today´s factories. The solution to these labor issues is to invest in automation. Sure there´s maintenance of the equipment, but that´s small numbers by comparison and can usually be contracted out.

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A NATO airstrike in eastern Afghanistan killed 11 civilians, 10 of them children, in addition to the Taliban militants it was trying to hit, Afghan officials said. The strike late Saturday in the Shigal district of restive Kunar province near Pakistan was called by coalition forces after they and their Afghan counterparts came under an attack that killed one American advisor and badly wounded four Afghan troops. The American death was reported on Saturday, but details of the alleged civilian casualties only surfaced Sunday. Wasifullah Wasifi, spokesperson for the governor of Kunar province, said the strike

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.

Climate change is expanding sea ice in Antarctica, a paradoxical finding that appears to be the result of melting glaciers, according to a new study. As freshwater glaciers melt, cold water sinks into the ocean, keeping the sea colder than it would otherwise be. The fresh water is less dense than seawater, so it floats on the top layer of the ocean, which in turn stays cooler. That makes it easier for the seas to freeze again in the Antarctic fall and winter, scientists say. This negative feedback is expected to continue, they added. Sea ice levels

Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. On Friday, Sean Hannity brought Pat Smith, mother of the late Sean Smith, on his radio program. The 34-year-old information management officer was one of four Americans murdered in the Benghazi embassy attack on September 11, 2012. In the chilling interview, a distraught Ms. Smith, in tears, pleaded for answers and spoke of the efforts to silence her. Ms. Smith first relayed how her son, prior to the attack, requested additional security in advance and warned the State Department: He did tell them, ahead of time, he typed it into his little typewriter over there,

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Susan Patton, the Princeton alumna who became famous for her letter urging Ivy League women to use their college years to find a mate, has been denounced as a traitor to feminism, to coeducation, to the university ideal. But really she’s something much more interesting: a traitor to her class. Her betrayal consists of being gauche enough to acknowledge publicly a truth that everyone who’s come up through Ivy League culture knows intuitively —

Newtown killer Adam Lanza may have launched his murder spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School as an “act of revenge,” the Daily News has learned. A close friend of Lanza’s mother told The News that the troubled boy was a target of relentless bullying when he attended the Connecticut school years ago. “I think Adam felt betrayed by the school and this was his act of revenge,” said Marvin LaFontaine, a friend of Nancy Lanza’s. “Nancy told me he was being picked on at school. That they were just torturing him.”

ATTLEBORO, Mass. — As many as 25 students at a Massachusetts school were denied lunch this week — with at least some forced to dump their food in the garbage — because they couldn´t pay, school officials and parents said. Outraged parents said some students at Coelho Middle School in Attleboro cried when they were told by a worker for the district´s food service provider they could not eat on Tuesday because they couldn´t pay or their pre-paid accounts were short on funds.
