Many companies put their plans on hold a couple of years ago when it became unclear what return they could expect on any further investment. Last Tuesday evening the plans for investment in the United States died.
Companies are in no mode to take any stuff from anyone, especially union employees. The capitol they do have to invest will probably do better outside the US and it is now a question of do they shut down US facilities and sell or move the machinery to a new plant or just walk away. At least shutting down the US operation will stop the bleeding.

I might have been upset about this at one time but the cakes I´ve had from them lately taste pretty awful.

Brings to mind an old gentleman I knew forty-years ago who owned a lumber distribution center. His employees tried to unionize, so he closed the doors, sold off the inventory/property and moved to Florida. (He liked to fish.)

Same here #31. I knew the owner of a carpeting business 40+ years ago (sold, delivered and installed commercial carpeting for businesses)who had a dozen employees. They tried to form/join a union. No problem. He closed the doors, terminated his lease and went to work as a one-man regional distributor company for a carpet manufacturer. I asked what happened to the employees. He didn´t know and didn´t seem to care (any more than they cared about him, that is).

Someone once said that because they contain so many preservatives, that the shelf life of Twinkies is 450 years ...

Many years ago a paper mill on Lincoln NH went on strike. The river into which they dumped their effluent was upgraded while they were on strike. The net effect was that they needed to treat their discharges, and they could not afford to do so. Plant closed, cleaner river, and union dues gone. What´s wrong with this picture?

This is why unions increasingly like gooberment unionization much more than private enterprise unionization... Gooberment has less ability and propensity to abrogate their contracts by going out of business or seeking bankruptcy relief.

One day a few weeks ago I got up and turned on Fox News and Mitt Romney was standing in front of a big yellow truck. I thought, I´ve seen that truck before. It was Marvin Wood and they have a plant in my small town that they struggle to keep open in these hard times. They are a family friendly company and have a "no lay-off" policy. They have had to cut hours to cut costs, but they keep up the employees´ health benefits. If they were union, I´m sure they would have closed the plant years ago.

If you watch "How its made" (awesome show, btw) you will notice that there´s an amazing amount of automation in today´s factories. The solution to these labor issues is to invest in automation. Sure there´s maintenance of the equipment, but that´s small numbers by comparison and can usually be contracted out.

My dad worked for an oil company and years ago one of their refineries´ employees threatened to unionize. It was a family owned company and the patriarch warned them that if they did he would sell. They did, and he did.
