Bitter cold inside a disaster shelter
Asbury Park Press [NJ], by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:NorthernDog, 11/9/2012 3:00:18 PM

OCEANPORT — As he lights up a Marlboro and takes a slow drag before exhaling, Brian Sotelo is a man who has finally reached his breaking point. Anger drips from every word as he peers out at the tops of the white tents rising over the trees in the distance. The depth of despair in his eyes is difficult to fathom. And he makes it clear he’s was not going down without a fight. We stood and talked in the cool morning air a short distance up the road after security at the front gate threatened to have our cars removed

Comments:
*with Bill Bowman and Stephen Edelson
Maybe some fumes from Air Force One can warm-up the tent shelters.

Not nearly as cold as our Governor treated his responsibility to the Country.

Lautenberg & Menendez are the ones tasked with obtaining Fed Funds.

Christie is a traitor.

And yet, Obama's heroic reaction to the storm and his obvious concern and love for its victims garnered him enough votes to win an election that will impact us all. Just another shuck and jive, hall of mirrors illusion from the, oh my God, it pains me to type this word, President. As an aside, when I hear stories about people who have no place to go in a disaster, I thank God for my family, friends, and my church. There is no member of my church who would ever have to sleep in a car. When you lose touch with the stabilizing organizations in your community, you are truly on your own. Big news flash to all you Obama-bots: The government is NOT your family. The government is NOT your church nor your protector.

Hey man, call the white house. Obama will have this taken care of before the sun sets. He will calm the seas and warm up your tent. Just call him, he'll fix it.

He really cares about you and says for you to enjoy your outdoor camping experience.

You will be able to see how Washington felt camping out all winter with his Patriots during war time to give you the chance to live free. To even vote for the winner in last Tuesdays election. Oh? You didn't? Could have fooled me.

By the way, I voted for the loser in the last two quadrennial elections . I feel real good about that.

fta: As Sotelo tells it, when it became clear that the residents were less than enamored with their new accommodations Wednesday night and were letting the outside world know about it, officials tried to stop them from taking pictures, turned off the WiFi and said they couldn’t charge their smart phones because there wasn’t enough power.

My wife and I have offered our home through several relief agencies and we get no response other then "please send money". It's true we live far away, but I've even offered to go get them. We have a 3,000 square foot home with 4 beds and 4 baths as well as a heated barn. I could be there and back with a load of people in 2 days, but I'm not going unless some arrangements have been made.

No, #19, this is justice. America has chosen a society where everything but government is pushed aside and squeezed out. No more intermediate institutions: church, family, private associations are all to be crushed so the ONLY succour is to be government. Now the people are standing naked on a howling plain with nothing between them and the clanking machinery of the monstrous, inhuman mile-high machine they've created and they cry that they're cold and hungry. Well, get used to it: this is the world you wanted.

#27.. Farmers with generators?? I know lots of people who live on a 1/8 acre that have a generator to help out when bad things happen. Nothing abnormal about that when you live in the South and in more rural America where we learned a long time ago the government can't save us from Mother Nature no matter what messianic man we elect as President, how many bomber jackets that Messiah adorns himself with, or how many tears he squeezes out for the benefit of the camera.

As I see it, there are three issues here. #1 is what we can do to help these people immediately. Continue contributing through trusted organizations like Salvation Army. The #2 issue is to demand accountability from those agencies (primarily FEMA) that have failed to live up to their responsibilities in spite of the millions of tax dollars they have been given. #3 is to address the long-term problem of over reliance on the federal government in times of crisis. Of course, that may not be possible in the next four years.

Oh, and it is possible to be better prepared than most of these folks were even if you live in a third floor walk-up. My 19 year-old granddaughter in an apartment is prepared with storage for food, water and over a month of survival supplies. Our responsibility for our own safety does not depend on where or how we live. It’s simply a matter of being responsible citizens.

Thanks to trees I have enough firewood to get through the winter since that is how I heat my house.

If electricity went off, I have a true landline. I can cook on the fireplace insert as well.

Freezer full of food, now I just need to get a really good inverter.

We are so much better prepared and I am not even close to what many folks do.

I am struggling with feeling any more compassion for these people...after all, they managed to vote for Obama again and look what it´s gotten them. As far as I am concerned, most of them brought it on themselves in both NJ and NY. FEMA, the Red Cross and Obama are all but missing in action now that the election is over, and they were not very visible before the election either. Word to New Yorkers and New Jersey citizens. The biggest political problem faced by so-called “liberals” and so-called “progressives” in President Obama’s second term is how to prevent voters from holding them politically responsible as the public comes to realize how badly they were lied to during the first Obama term to win passage of Obamacare. Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.

The US defence department has delayed an intercontinental ballistic missile test that had been planned for next week at an air force base in California amid mounting tensions with North Korea, according to a senior official. Defence secretary Chuck Hagel reportedly decided to put off the long-planned Minuteman 3 test until next month because of concerns the launch could be misinterpreted and exacerbate the Korean crisis. The new offering reflects the growing popularity of nuggets and strips that are easier to eat on the go, as well as Americans´ seemingly endless desire for more convenient foods. Climate change is expanding sea ice in Antarctica, a paradoxical finding that appears to be the result of melting glaciers, according to a new study. As freshwater glaciers melt, cold water sinks into the ocean, keeping the sea colder than it would otherwise be. The fresh water is less dense than seawater, so it floats on the top layer of the ocean, which in turn stays cooler. That makes it easier for the seas to freeze again in the Antarctic fall and winter, scientists say. This negative feedback is expected to continue, they added. Sea ice levels
