One cannot underestimate the influence of Cassius Clay (pseudonym: Muhammad Ali) had on not winning graciously. I remember a time when in sports players did not gloat after scoring, did not show off, did not taunt opponents. Carmichael's ugly ideas were quite compatible with the ridiculous (but scary) "Black Muslims," and Clay, being all but illiterate, took his own tendency to show off and boast and popularize it. This gloating and confrontations then took on some racist political connotation.
