The President's Cliff Walk
Wall Street Journal, by Editorial

Original Article

So much for the post-election honeymoon. The financial markets took a header Wednesday on (take your pick) the return of European troubles, the risk of a Beltway breakdown over the looming tax cliff, or the greater prospect of a major tax increase arriving in 2013. (Snip) Specifically, is he going to consider his re-election to be a mandate to repeat his first-term record of rejecting all GOP ideas and insisting on his priorities? Or is he going to show some magnanimity in victory and give Republican Speaker John Boehner something he can sell to his own re-elected majority?

Comments:
One indicator will be his appointment to succeed Geithner. If it is Jack Lew, it means he intends to keep on fighting.

How can we thank John Boehner and then replace him with a better communicator and throw 0bama off his game? 0bama has his narrative against Boehner, and the LSM supports it. How about a game changer?

I'd like to see Trump. It would be fun, a lot more fun than watching the House of Reps unilaterally disarm.

The Republicans in the house should vote present on every vote. Obama inherited his own mess. He and the Dems with major assistance from the press own it. Republicans are going to be called obstructionistts at the very least, vilified as usual. Why cooperate with someone who is trying to destroy you?

It is not in Obama's genes to compromise and be moderate. If the country goes off the fiscal cliff, it won't hurt Obama's feelings. On the contrary, it will fit Obama's agenda of realigning America's status vis-a-vis the global community.

As a school superintendent, you’re typically measured by a few numbers. Test scores, graduation rates, crime rates, finances, gaps in student achievement, and perhaps a few other metrics, depending on your board of education. You can actually tackle these problems, or you can employ the dark art of data manipulation. In 2012, a news story exploded onto the national stage that was very instructive in how to magically lower school crime statistics – yet nearly every major news outlet missed it.(Snip)Alberto Carvalho just won Superintendent of the Year, and his numbers appear to be impressive. President Barack Obama’s appearance on funnyordie.com’s parody show “Between Two Ferns,” where he took mock questions from comic Zach Galifianakis, was a lot of things: funny, unusual, an intriguing way to sell Obamacare and very popular. One thing it was not, though, was an “interview” — unless you’re White House press secretary Jay Carney. Carney was defending the administration’s aggressive campaign to get young people to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. (Snip)That’s some quality trolling of the media by Carney, a former Time magazine bureau chief.

BURBANK, Calif.—A 3-year-old boy who fell out of a third-story window in Burbank was saved by a quick-acting couple who threw a mattress out to break his fall. KABC-TV reports Konrad Lightner and his wife, Jennifer, were moving out of their apartment Sunday when they noticed the toddler and his sister throwing their toys out the window. When they saw the little boy throw his leg over the window sill, Konrad rushed to put the mattress down. He was able to break the child’s fall, placing him onto the mattress. The toddler was taken to a local hospital for evaluation,

California public health officials say 19 of the 32 cases of measles they have confirmed so far this year are in people who had not been vaccinated, and of that group, 14 were intentionally not vaccinated. As the number of measles cases continues to grow across the state — there were only three by this time last year — officials at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) have urged parents against opting out of vaccinating their children. They say an increase in the number of people choosing not to vaccinate could drive a resurgence of the respiratory disease, since

VILNIUS, Lithuania—Vice President Biden’s we’re-all-in-this together tour of Eastern Europe, a two-country stop that concludes here Wednesday, has highlighted not only the growing regional anxieties over Russia’s designs on Ukraine but also how much work the Obama administration has to do to convince allies of its support. At its core, Biden’s message here and in Poland was a simple reaffirmation of what one senior administration official called a “bedrock commitment”: The United States would honor NATO’s basic premise that if one member nation is attacked, all would come to its defense. SEVASTOPOL/MOSCOW--The United States warned Moscow it was on a "dark path" to isolation on Wednesday after Russian troops backed by unarmed volunteers stormed Ukraine´s naval headquarters in the Crimean port of Sevastopol and raised their flag. The dramatic seizure came as Russia and the West dug in for a long confrontation over Moscow´s annexation of Crimea, with the United States and Europe groping for ways to increase pressure on a defiant Russian President Vladimir Putin. In other words, the most distinguished scientists from the country with the world´s pre-eminent educational institutions were trying to shake humanity out of its complacency. That goes beyond hypocritical, and I think the American media and the international media has every right to call her and the Obama administration on that — that they permitted that to happen,” said Tom Whalen, a political history professor at Boston University. “It makes you shake your head, albeit sadly.” The first lady stopped at Peking University in Beijing yesterday
