Puerto Rico approves statehood
Washington Post, by Caitlin Dewey

Original Article

Posted By:supersid, 11/8/2012 8:10:12 AM

A slim majority of Puerto Ricans voted Tuesday to approve a nonbinding referendum that would make the island the 51st U.S. state. The measure requires final approval from Congress, so it means little for Puerto Rico right now. Still, nearly 54 percent of Puerto Ricans voted for a change in the U.S. commonwealth’s relationship with the United States — and President Obama promised to uphold their vote in the case of a “clear majority.”

Comments:
Long way to go still. Imagine Puerto Rico getting 2 US Senators. Chances are they will have (D) after their name.

I am guessing that they already get plenty of the 'low income' perks that the mainlanders enjoy so maybe that won't cost us more. However, OP is correct. That's a guaranteed two more left-wing Democrat senators.

This is a chance for the Republicans to capture the Latino vote. Champion statehood for Puerto Rico and make gains into he Latino electorate.

My P.R. graduate students, during my teaching days, told me that P.R. residents are not subject to the federal income tax system.
Give them statehood, and they would be.
In addition, 30% of its residents work for the Puerto Rican central government.
Finally, they did have revolutionaries in P.R., who in the early 1950s, shot up the floor of the House of Representatives in D.C., and tried to assassinate President Truman. They called themselves separatists.
Bill Clinton pardoned some of them, for the sake of HIllary's run for the senate from NY.
P.R. statehood would probably bring back the revolutionaries. Che style.

In fact, I say, no statehood and a complete withdrawal of American funds from the island.

This is amazing. I lived in PR for a year -- and advocated that they should either be a state or independent because the commonwealth status helped no one and created both dependency and resentment.

There is a very long path to statehood, and I don't see it happening.

That said, the governor is a Republican and is doing a very hard job of reform. He has downsized the government payroll and done quite a bit to reform the "system". He spoke at the R national convention -- worth looking him up (Luis Fortuno).

One complained that when he and the babies momma moved here, they didn't receive a free apartment anymore, but she still had Medicaid for her and kids.

RINOs need to take back

RINO-hunting, the long-popular political sport that morphed in 2008 into a sort of hysteria-driven obsession, lately has become a suicide mission. RINO, of course, refers to Republicans In Name Only and is the pejorative term used against those who fail to march in lockstep with the so-called conservative base. I used “so-called” because, though the hard-right faction of the party tends to be viewed as The Base, this isn’t necessarily so. My guess is there are now more RINOs than those who, though evangelical in their zeal, are poison to their party’s ability to win national elections.

About fiscal prudence, for example. Say what you like about a high-living, big-spending, bloated, decadent parasitical, wastrel monarchy, but, compared to the citizen-executive of a republic of limited government, it´s a bargain. If you want to understand why President Obama was reelected despite a largely unsuccessful presidency and almost unprecedentedly high and continuous unemployment, just look at the Cuban-American vote. Asians who became successful because everyone in the family worked two or three jobs (a common strategy behind Asian success) are likely to be offended by the liberal “You didn’t build that” mentality. On the contrary, Asians are penalized by affirmative action, especially in the universities, where discrimination against Asian applicants (relative to their superb academic qualifications) has been documented in the technical literature.
