Two republican candidates who sparked a furore with comments about rape have been lost their election bids as the Democrats look set to defend their majority in the US senate. Missouri Republican US senate candidate Todd Akin, who was criticised in August for comments about "legitimate rape," has been defeated by Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill. Until the rape comment, Mr Akin was considered the favourite to beat Ms McCaskill in a state that has trended Republican and voted for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Thing One: if the GOP is to win these races, they must nominate their best candidates, which means that open primaries must end.

Thing Two: these guys were political idiots.

Abortion is a sacrament among liberal and single women. And making a stupid comment about rape has the same effect as praising the KKK in the inner city. These were self inflicted and unnecessary mortal wounds. I understood what they were trying to convey but they opened themselves up for their own defeat. Just like Mitt's 47% comment.

Look ...... the left expects democrats to say stupid things and lie to them. They do however hold republicans to a higher standard because we hold ourselves to a higher standard. Its a fact of life.

We are going to have to come to grips with the fact that women, when they think they or their daughters may lose any part of their "reproductive rights" will vote for those that will protect them. Abortion is the law of the land and it will not change. Want to scare a woman, tell her that her daughter has been raped but can't get an abortion. Until we get candidates that can talk about the issue without coming across as knuckle dragging, slobbering, idiots we will lose.

These moron need to learn:
The Supreme Court has ruled abortion legal under the Constitution and as a US Senator I will swear to uphold the Constitution. I will vote against tax payer funded abortions.

When will Republican men stop being dense and falling into the abortion trap. When asked instead of some stupid remark, why can't we find candidates that just say it is legal and that is all I can say. That doesn't mean they approve or support it, but to keep allowing dems to be elected is not going to change things.

Abortion is the lease of our worries. I am sick of republicans throwing the game by freaking women out over abortion. The middle east is going to explode. He's going to unilaterally cut our nuclear arsenal. The UN is going to enforce gun control on us. The government continues to print money to hand out to free loaders.

Akin and Mourdock lost because they didn't have the sense to shut up. If they had said they were opposed to abortion in all cases, and then refused to elaborate, they would have had a chance. But they had to open their big stupid fressers.

These two morons deserved to lose. I wish they hadn't, but it is what it is. Akin in particular was insistent that he could win despite his having revealed himself to be a troglodyte.

The irony is this: even if they had won, they could have done nothing--nothing--in the US Senate about abortion. So they slit their own throats (and ours) over an issue that was irrelevant.

Problem is, #20, this is a chronic pattern. We all know what the press is and does; the GOP does not know how to deal with it. Gingrich gave us a hint, but Mitt's team ignored it. Time for a new party that is not afraid of the big, bad media.

The reality is that damocrats can say anything and get away with it because of the media. Republicans on the other hand don't even have to specifically say something and the damocrats and media will provide the interpretation of it to suit their needs. Until Republicans, especially stupid ones like these two get that through their heads, we will continue to come out on the short end.

Reply 25 - Posted by: jorgecito, 11/7/2012 11:59:29 AM     (No. 8996468)

Akin and Mourdock are two very good men. I sent them contributions, though I knew it was probably a lost cause. God speed to them.

Look at what has come to pass:
A candidate can no longer speak the truth about abortion; or even utter a thought about it that is clumsily phrased, no matter how innocuous, without being crushed.

That such a thing can make such a difference, in a momentous national election, is deeply saddening. Those of us who are pro-life thought we had finally, finally made some progress in recent years in rolling back the culture of death ... now I am not so sure.

A reckoning is coming, I fear, and am reminded today, more than ever, of the words of Thomas Jefferson:

"I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever."

The execution drew protests from human rights groups concerned about the growing use of capital punishment in such cases.
